Need Sound Editing Advice

I edit videos, montages, machinema, intro's etc etc but one thing I've always lacked is some kind of sound editing software. I need something easy to use, because I don't see myself going to far in depth with it and free or "pirate-able" :P

What I want to do is take a gun sound and slow it down, like slow motion but keep it clear and clean. After Effects doesn't have great sound adjustments. At least not from what I've seen.

Let me know if any of you have an idea what I can do.

If it will slow down an MP3 of a gunshot and keep it sounding clean then that's all I'll need. Thank you in advance.
