Its possible that the agreement between Bethesda and Microsoft is either being rescinded or expiring, thus we get DLC at the same time. It is also possible that in order to appease PC and PS3 owners that they are giving them and exclusive armor pack or something.

Not really. Get the mod Build Your Own Home, that's about 70% of the content of Hearthfire right there. It's better in some ways (more modular and redesignable with a mix-and-match interior decor, more interactive in its construction, has an admittedly shallow story), and worse in other ways (only a single location you can build on, construction materials can be a pain to get), but all-in-all it's just about as good. And free.

As for the remaining 30% of Hearthfire, that's the whole family deal. There are mods out there that do that too, but I haven't used any so I couldn't tell which is the best one. Names off the top of my head that you might want to check out are Give A Dog A Home, Spouses Can Live Everywhere and/or Adopt A Child.

Not really. Get the mod Build Your Own Home, that's about 70% of the content of Hearthfire right there. The only real selling points of the mod over the DLC are that the mod is free, some of the decorations are very well put together (as in, it doesn't use the default "put a pot on a plate on a side table", it actually mashed up the vanilla graphics of things to make some impressive looking stuff), and the hidden lair (some of them are very, VERY nice). However the mod has a lot of downsides to it.

-The house itself is tiny and cramped (with the exception of the secret room, which is easily the same size as the house but you have to go into the basement and through a secret door in a book case to get to it).
Seriously. Breezehome is bigger.
-You don't get to build decorations, you build a theme.
In the DLC you get to build each shelf, each stand, each table, and so on. Even though they're all automatically placed, through trial and error you can pick and choose to have the decorations you want. But with the mod you just pick a theme and then all the decorations are placed. But, as I noted above, some of these decorations are pretty nice looking.
-Respawning pets.
Imagine my surprise when I had some bunnies and a fox randomly running inside my tiny house. I don't recall them being mentioned, but I was especially annoyed when they respawned after I deliberately killed them because them banging into stuff and the fox growling was getting annoying.

Is Hearthfire worth 5 bucks? Probably not. But will people PLEASE stop playing up the Build Your Own House mod? For a free mod it's pretty cool but it REALLY does not compare to the DLC. The novelty of building your own house with the mod wears off pretty quick once you realize you just built a 2 story shack in the woods that's barely large enough for a single person to live in (god forbid you use a mod to give yourself more than one follower, as they will make walking around an unnecessary chore).

You're better off finding some other pre-made house mod, unless the tiny shack in the woods really appeals to you. Though I do recommend checking it out for the hidden lair rooms. Some of them are very nice, although I feel the guy who made the mod should just make seperate house mods because he does make very nice decorations.

he's a former dragon priest and, i believe he's undead. so he's definitely got an evil background. he's probably back and wanting to retake what he once ruled. so we're probably going to be fighting for the new leaders to stop him from taking their throne. i'm rather disappointed that we're probably going to kill him :/

If I, as a mage, am going to loot his totally badass robes off of him when he dies then I'm happy.

I was rather surprised the original thread got past 3 posts let alone a few pages before being merged, Skyrim does have a megathread open to all discussion.

Personally I look forward to the story this DLC may bring in, now to just decide if I want to use my Stealth/archer, 2H, 1H/shield or Vampire Lord/Mage.

Aw, only 10 hours for 20€. Will probably hold off until it goes down to 5 in some steam sale. Hearthfire just seems entirely useless to get for the PC version since you can just mod that stuff in for free

Honestly I'd say it was 20 bucks well spent.

I just hope they do conclude the Thalmore storyline in Skyrim and don't hold it off. Maybe the fact that they're releasing unrelated DLC means there's a lot more to come? One can hope. If Dawnguard was any indication, they're doing exceptional things with the tools they have.

The two-story house you build, plus the basement, plus the secret lair, plus the large outside area, plus the dungeon it connects to is significantly larger than any vanilla house. I could probably agree that other mod houses like Dragon Falls Manor are larger, and as I haven't tried Hearthfire (for obvious reasons), I can't say whether that one is larger or smaller - but one thing is certain, the size of the constructions are significantly larger than what you make them out to be.

That's a fair enough point. Again, I don't know how much customization Hearthfire has. I question whether that makes it worth the cost though.

They are mentioned. Very, very clearly. As well as what to do about them if you don't like it. Just kill them, they won't respawn. If they respawned for you, I do hope you reported that bug to the mod author.

I'll be honest, you sound more like someone who bought Hearthfire and feel you need to justify your purchase by convincing yourself a mod couldn't possibly do the same concept even remotely as well. This could very well be a misinterpretation on my part, but that's how you come across to me.

All in all, to the guy who asked the question in the first place, I recommend that you try the mod out. If you don't like it, uninstallation instructions are available.

Without any hesitation if you have a good enough PC though.

Skyrim is cheaper on PC (like pretty much every PC game)

Skyrim has better graphics (better resolution)

You can easily manage save files with PC so you can have multiple avatar

Skyrim have been heavily patch on PC, i encountered 0 bug since i bought it a few month ago

If you like, you can easily take screenshot or movieshot of your gameplay

Skyrim can be moded on PC
- new weapon model , new armor model
- Enhanced difficulty to give you a real challenge
- better inventory, enhanced map, ...
- new craft (arrows, ...)
- New texture (face, body, ...)
- and much much more...

And finally, being FPS style gameplay, at least with range avatar, you have a much higher precision on your shot with a mouse. But even if you prefer gamepad, you can of course use gamepad on PC. Most video card allow you to plug a HDMI LCD/plasma TV screen, either buit-in or with an adaptator.


If you have a good enough PC, there is no reason to prefer skyrim on console, unless you really want to up your xbox live /PS network achievement point.

So I take it you have no idea what the phrase "the house itself" means? The HOUSE is tiny. And cramped. The only exception being the secret room, as I said.
The size of the outdoor items doesn't count for shit because it's not like he took any effort to make them look special. You could easily confuse it for "random bandit camp#501". And the dungeon is not part of the house (and definitely not a selling point of the mod).

It does the same concept just fine. It's just is not the shining glowing beacon of awesomeness that everyone is making it out to be.

And I find it ridiculous that you're trying to call me out as some kind of fanboy after you have admitted you haven't even tried the DLC. ESPECIALLY considering in my post I didn't exactly give the DLC a glowing recommendation and instead recommended using other house mods. But hey, since you obviously went out of your way to ignore what I was actually saying multiple times I find it easy to believe you just plain didn't read the end of my post.
