    [Music] Essential Metal Albums

In this modern age there are countless metal bands (don't believe me, check out the band listing on this site: Encyclopaedia Metallum) and it is sometimes hard to find quality ones. The purpose of this thread it to introduce new listeners of the genre/reintroduce old listeners to the essential metal albums, that every metal fan should know.

I will start off the list with albums I believe are essential, feel free to correct me or suggest more, don't forget to mention the sub genre.

Hmm I'd add Katatonia - Brave Murder Day on Doom metal
    Behemoth - Demigod, Thelema.6
Satanic Warmaster (Black metal) deserves a few albums mentioned as well. My suggestion is Carelian Satanist Madness.

Deicide - Deicide, Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten, Malevolent Creation - The ten commandments, Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding, should at least be added imo. Spiritual Apocalypse from Monstrosity as 2nd album. That's on death metal.

Manowar is missing as well. I can add more later

    Edit:
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina (Black Metal)
Immortal - At The Heart of Winter as 2nd album
    Crowbar - Crowbar (Sludge Metal)
Tormentor - Anno Domini (Black Metal)

    Death/Melodic Death:
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul (pretty much started melodic death as we know it) ((1995))
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God (although I hate AA, this album is undeniably influential) ((2008))
Dark Tranquility - The Gallery (along with Slaughter of the Soul, started melodic death) ((1995))

    Black Metal/Post-metal:
Agalloch - The Mantle (started fusing black metal with different instruments while adding a post-metal feel) ((2002))
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain (Pretty much solidified black metal as we know it) ((2006))
Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow (definitely not post-metal, but this album sets the stage for what aggressive black metal is all about) ((2009))
Isis - Panopticon (NOT black metal, but is considered one of the greatest post-metal albums out there and I'm inclined to agree) ((2004))

    Death/Progressive Metal:
Opeth - Blackwater Park (Quintessential Opeth. Everything that is great about progressive metal and death metal all in one) ((2001))
Opeth - Still Life (pretty much the first album to blend death, progressive and folk/acoustic into one epic set of songs) ((1999))
Septic Flesh - The Great Mass (Easily the best album to go to for a fix of dark symphonic death/black) ((2011))

Metalcore (shuddup, it's metal so I suggest getting over it):
August Burns Red - Constellations (in the sea of mediocrity and monotony in metalcore, this album branches greatly to blend some post-metal in with the breakdowns) ((2009))
The Human Abstract - Digital Veil (if it weren't for the title track, this wouldn't even be considered metalcore -- really the first and still original band to truly blend pure classical composition with modern metal/metalcore) ((2011))
Unearth - III: In the Eyes of Fire (the quintessential metalcore album) ((2006))

    Grindcore/hardcore:
Converge - Jane Doe (considered one of the best albums of the 2000-2010 decade) ((2001))

    Sludge:
Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm (a lighter, extremely focused take on sludge) ((2004))
Neurosis - A Sun that Never Sets (Sludge with some serious folk influences) ((2001))

For the record, I'm not just listing off my favorite bands. All these albums are critically acclaimed.

And another thing to add, fantastic thread. Haven't seen an album on the list that isn't deserving of a "must listen to" status.

Solid list. I especially like seeing Celtic Frost and Venom not listed under Black Metal. I would add Unleashed "Where No Life Dwells" under Death Metal, and maybe considering adding a "Dark Metal" category, with Bethlehem's "Dark Metal" & "S.U.I.Z.I.D". Folk metal is also a prominent subgenre these days with bands like Falkenbach, Moonsorrow and Thyrfing. Solitude Aeternus "Adagio" for Doom Metal. Impaled Nazarene "Ugra-Kharma" and Carpathian Forest's "Black Shining Leather" would be good additions to Black Metal.

How could I forget Tormentor and Manowar, I must be tired.

Oh yeah, and can't forget Cathedral for doom metal. Nevermore and Sanctuary for Thrash Metal.

What about Anvil? Their album Metal on Metal was pretty popular when it came out and was praised by various metal artists. They have also been cited as being an inspiration to both Metallica and some of the bands that followed them. They still kick major ass and many of their albums have been met with praise from critics, but sadly, they never really got their breakthrough. They are mostly known for being the "forgotten metal gods", which is a damn shame. They kicked ass back then and they kick ass nowadays.

Add some Therion. Deathspell Omega, unique auditive experience.

Also, I recommend you guys check out mapofmetal.com .

    Add:
    - Entombed - But Life Goes On [their first demo, which kicks ass, pure oldschool DM], and change Entombed - Left Hand Pass into Path !
    - Some Marduk, doesn't matter which album, they are all good, if you're going to add one before 2004, add another also with Mortuus as vocalist.
    - Apruptum - Obscuitatem Advoco Amplectere Me / In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo, In Aeternum In Triumpho Tenebraum
    - Enslaved - Frost

And by the way, delete Metalcore, that thing has nothing to do with Metal in general.

Lol, for some reason I always remeber the entombed album as pass instead of path, stupid mistake. As for metalcore, it depends on the band, most are more core than metal, so the list wont be long at all. I will leave it on for right now and decide wether I should delete it later.

I see Forged... as the more important album but I added Metal on Metal too, its a true classic.
