If someone is derailing the thread, you say "stop posting OT" or similar, not "you are not posting OT". In what situation would you need to abbreviate on topic as OT? Surely this is basic forum etiquette
Exactly, you should be posting most of the time on topic, therefore saying you're doing so is kinda redundant. Also, Off Topic is one character longer than On Topic, it has a bigger need to be abbreviated than On Topic!

    Official Toast.

OnT is Ontopic for me, OT is nothing.

    Depends on the context really.

You are in a thread about apples.

    Scenario 1:

    I like cars.

    OT: I also like apples.

I'd have to agree with the people who say it's dependent on context. It could easily be used either way and understood/make sense either way as well. I don't think it's too difficult to figure out myself.

  11. #31
I always see it being used as Off topic, right now its 50 /50

to me, OT means off topic. if i wish to go back to topic, i write b2t or simply on topic. meanly because "off topic" is somewhat unpleasant to write.

however, I am still able to to differentiate if someone uses it another way due to context.

It's just short for "the following statement is unrelated to anything before!"
That's brilliant and it defines the use of OT pretty good, at least from what I've seen.

I see it more commonly used to mean on-topic - usually after a poster gives a direct response to another poster about a possibly unrelated matter, and then gets back to responding to the OP/the topic - and thus assume that to be the case until it's confirmed.

I personally write it out in full
...actually, I tend to go around that by putting the off-topic/direct-respponse-thingy (often after a quote) at the end of the post.

In the context of these forums, I always think of it as "On-Topic", Rammurg nailed my reasoning:
