    And the difference between a GiB (1,073,741,824 Byte) and a GB (1,000,000,000 Byte)!

    Which was my initial point, they say the reduced capacity is due to formatting and such, when it's just a different way of counting. tetris was right on pointing out the difference between GB and GiB, which isn't used much by people outside of the geekier crowd.

    yeah, I didn't assume that though because I'm used to that marketing with HDD's so I just assume it's going to be much lower without bothering to do the math... but like I said... with an SSD it's slightly more of a concern since they're small enough that every GB counts. So I assumed that the person men't that SSD's have a smaller space to use even after that "conversion"

    Calling you a geek is a compliment!

    And on that note, I wasn't trying to put you down for bringing up things many don't know about. Quite the opposite. People need to be educated, even if we have to beat the info into them physically.

    Where is this school?

    I wish it existed, but the line of thought should explain why I respond to some posts the way I do.

    I like my way of calculating it. It's not as accurate but it's easier to remember.
    60GBx0.93=55.8

    Well it's pretty simple to get the number for a GiB, just throw 1024^3 in a calculator.

    Try explaining that to people that don't know why their hard drive is 465GB when they bought a 500GB one.
    "Multiply by 0.93" is way simpler.

    This is where the "beat the information into them" methodology comes into play. Once they understand it, then they can use the easy method.

    By then people just ask me why they have to be difficult on purpose and use two different conversion-systems.

    At that point, after already having explained why with maths, I just say that computers are retarded and can only operate the way we taught them. They usually feel smug and superior then. Irony. ^^

    And it's listed as 128GB, not 120GB, and the math still works.

    Hey I'm not the one complaining, I'm just further showing those who question this that it's the same for SSDs. As that's how I read some of the posts. :P
