Wait what? I cast mana shield all the time in some fights to mitigate some damage and give me the IA spellpower bonus. My DPS isn't that stellar either but I have never thought of Mana Shield as a bad thing... it gives you spellpower and helps the healers out a tiny bit.

During a burn phase I will use both mage ward and mana shield to proc IA as you get more SP from it as IA counts the absorb from both when the damage goes off, not one then the other and giving the higher of the two.
