Silent Hill series from 1-4. I highly recommend the first one if you want to feel adrenaline and fear, turn the sound up as much as you can for maximum immersion. It's a lot running, jammed doors, navigating, and puzzles but you're not restricted to follow a set path. You can explore the town and pick up extra stuff that you might need and find secrets that lead to alternate endings. Though I doubt you'll find it in a rental store since it's a PS1 game and it's old. Still the 2nd and 3rd are very well done and the fourth is good too.
It's not very combat oriented if that's what you're looking for. Homecoming is more of a 'resi-style' but with more melee fighting.
If you want more shooting then Deadspace, FEAR, and Resi 4 is what you want.
