Handheld game consoles, Pokemans, and Me

I want to buy a new portable game console for plane rides and things, and want to tap the greater (in volume) knowledge here.

    Some facts for consideration:
    1) I had a Nintendo DS, and liked it. It had some puzzle-type games, and compatibility with other games I liked.
    2) I had Pokemon Blue a few million years ago, and liked it. Turn-based RPGs are fun to me.
    3) I have no particular love for one brand or another, but low-cost (and the above factors) is something I definitely consider, as well as availability at the local Gamestop of used games and hopefully the used handheld console.

So, which game console would you suggest? Or more accurately, which game console is your favorite, and why would I like it too?

3DS, next gen Gameboy, and since you liked the DS, it makes sense. Wait for the price drop, though, it's currently still a bit high, and most of the good games aren't out yet, there is OOT 3D, the other goodies won't really be out until the Holidays, sadly. :/

Waiting for the price drop is the more fiscally responsible action.

But if you're like me, I had my system pre-ordered with four games on the day of release. Now I'm even more excited that when the price drop happens, I'm getting 20 games for free. 10 of those games won't be available on the Nintendo Shop. Also, I can't wait for StarFox64 3D and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overdrive. By the way, don't let anyone bullshit you about the battery life. I leave mine on Sleep Mode two or three days straight, with the occasional play time, and I've yet to had a time where it was critically low. Most of my job consists of me walking around, so I rack dem Play Coins up like a boss everyday.

Kankuri: I'm fairly certain that is the definition of awkward.
Bibi: I want you inside me Kankuri
    Bibi: now, that's awkward.

Got mine before the drop, 20 free games for me too!

We end up in all the same threads, heh.

You know what that means, right? We have similar interests.

But hey, you know what that means, right? We should remove our pants. I mean, I'm already ahead of you on that one, but I can wait.

I also forgot to mention Netflix on the 3DS is pretty damn awesome. I really like the fact that I can slap an 8 gig flashcard in there and use it like an MP3 player. Pokemon, Street Fighter IV, Mario, Tetris, Humming Urban Stereo, Clazziquai, and Perfume on the go? Yes, pl0x.

Is the 3DS really necessary? The DS Lite or whichever one was previous to the current generation console is a LOT cheaper at the store near me. Is the new one THAT much better?

The 3DS is at Gamestop for about $250, and the DS Lite (the DSi is not worth the money to me) is about $80.

Is the new one $170 better?

The 3DS isn't just another version of the DS. Many think that it is just a DS with 3D capabilities. Its a completely new and more powerful handheld. The titles coming out later this year really show off the capabilities of the system. A good example would be Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. MGS3 looks even better on the 3DS than it does on the PS2. Not to mention that games are built to run at a minimum of 30 FPS. Most of the time, that's only mandatory for console games. What this means is you'll be seeing better looking and better performing games.

I'm anxious to see the next Resident Evil, I think it's Revelations. The producer claims that he is achieving next generation graphics quality on the 3DS.

EDIT: The pricing is the only difference between the "new" and the "old" 3DS. You're buying the same one I did months ago.

I see a lot of suggestions towards the 3DS but I will throw out one thing that I personally love about the PSP that it does that the 3DS doesn't and that is that the newer models of it have the ability to hook up to a TV to play.

If you are looking for mainly Pokemon games then obviously 3DS/DSi/DS is the way to go but I would also suggest looking at some of the PSP exclusive RPGs if you are just looking for any turn based RPGs in general. There's a lot of great strategy RPGs for it like Disgaea and Jean Darc. Then there's great action RPGs like Crisis Core and the Monster Hunter games as well as the absolutely amazing Ys Seven. And of course for traditional turn based RPGs there are two remakes of the first two Final Fantasy games, the Legend of Heroes series and the very under rated PoPoLoCrois. Also Half-Minuet Hero is a great spin on RPGs that I definitely recommend.

That is not to say DS doesn't have great RPGs(im not sure but I would think quantity wise DS has more) like Nostalgia, the Mario&Luigi games and Sands of Destruction. Do some research and see what type of RPG you prefer the most compared to what each system offers. If you are looking for purely traditional turn based RPG then I think DS may have the greater quantity of them, but like I said check out some of the great exclusives that PSP offers also before you choose.

Won't that be possible with the WiiU for the 3DS? Not out yet, mind you, but that's only what I've heard.

I haven't heard anything about that but if it does then I will definitely be very impressed, especially if it would allow original DS games to be played on a television.

Is it really? I find the 3D option more of a gimmick. I just bought another ds (lite though) over 3DS for the sole reason that it is nothing more than a gimmick to me.

I don't know about pricing for you on DS games OP but try out https://www.play-asia.com

It sure is a lot cheaper than when I buy my games from my own country.

Isn't the 3DS price getting dropped to 169.99 sometime soon? If you're thinking of getting a DS Lite for 170, you might want to wait awhile longer and get the the 3DS when the price drops.

Renember the old DS wont get new titles now, so if you wanna keep up 3DS is needet.

No, the price difference between a used DS Lite and the 3DS currently is $170, but I can definitely wait for a price drop.

For comparison's sake, and because I'm not dead-set on any one console, the PSP 3000 Core pack, which I imagine is the comparable PSP, is offered for about $130 used. This will definitely come into play later.

It's not another DS, it's the next gen, the 3D can easily be turned off with the switch on the system.

DS can't handle this. (I feel the need to link this wherever I can, it's just so lovely)

Ah, I see. Yeah $170 did sound high for an older DS.

The battery life lasts longer if you don't use 3D. I've driven the battery from full to dead in about 5 hours of 3D gameplay.

I just leave it in the charger when I'm not using it though, so it doesn't really matter.
