Thread: New computer

    New computer

So I am in need of a new computer. I am looking to run WoW on max settings while maintaining a high fps. I have a budget of $1500 not including monitor, mouse, keyboard (would not mind some suggestions on them tho also). I prefer AMD due to price difference, but I am open to whatever. So lets see some suggestions.

Have you had a look at some of the Builds posted on the front page of MMO-C? Mix and Match with a few of them and you should be able to find a suitable build. I've made myself one of the Narwhal's today actually, and I am able to run everything on maximum settings @ 1920x1080 resolution.

Case: Fractal Design Define R3 $109.99
Power Supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W $94.99
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68 UD-4 $159.99
    Processor: Intel i7 2600k $314.99
    CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 $85.87
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2x4GB) $57.99
    SSD: OCZ Vertex 90GB $149.99
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB Cache 1TB $79.99
Optical Disc Drive: Sony Optiarc SATA DVD/CD Burner $19.99
Graphics Card: MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr II OC $349.99
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium $99.99
    Total: 1523.77 USD
I wanted to put a 6970 in it, but those are kinda sold out everywhere. You can drop the price by $100 by putting a i5 2500K in it instead of the 2600K, if you already have windows, that's another 100 bucks saved.
For the HDD you could switch to a Samsung Spinpoint F3. It's a little bit slower though.

    2nd build with other parts:
Case: Cooler Master 690 II Advanced $89.99
    Power Supply: Seasonic X-650 650W $139.99
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68 UD-4 $159.99
    Processor: Intel i5 2500k $219.99
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus $27.99
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2x4GB) $57.99
    SSD: OCZ Vertex 90GB $149.99
    Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $59.99
Optical Disc Drive: Sony Optiarc SATA DVD/CD Burner $19.99
Graphics Card: MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr II OC $349.99
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium $99.99
    Total: 1375.89 USD
You can also mix and match between these 2 builds.
Case is personal taste ofcourse. The PSU from the 2nd build is better.
CPU performs the same in games as the 2600K.
The Hyper 212 Plus is sufficient for most overclocks, unless you want to go extreme you don't actually need the NH-D14.

For both builds: leave out the SSD if you don't feel the need for it.

If you are spending $1,500.00, you don't want to save money on AMD. The i5/i7 blow AMD out of the water.

I agree with the build listed. Drop to an i5 2500k and double your ram, if it were me.

Actually WD Caviar Black and Spinpoint F3 are pretty much identical in performance.

Caviar Black is more expensive but has a longer warranty.

Was kinda my same thought, why I was not resistant to intel, figured see what might come about and maybe save some cash. I am not too worried about it tho.

Sunflora, what might your build look like if you don't mind posting it up.

They're going to be very close if not identical on some parts. This is due to their reliance, and the price to performance ratio. The nice thing is if you go with say a $1000 build you have enough left over for 2 monitors or one really nice large one. Just an idea.

Also just want to mention if you're not turned away by Intel you should definitely go with the current Intel series of CPU's they really do perform better and more often than not are close to equivalently priced depending on model.

    Case: not decided yet
Power Supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 Intel Z68 Motherboard
    Processor: i5 2500k
CPU Cooler: Thermaletake frio the old black and red one (will it fit the socket?)
RAM: G.Skill Sniper Low Voltage 8G 1600mhz (this worth it/work with the board?)
    SSD: none for now
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB Cache 1TB
Optical Disc Drive: Sony Optiarc SATA DVD/CD Burner
Graphics Card: MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Will this all go? My current plan if this all works and will run wow how I want it is to upgrade other stuff later on. I plan on a ssd, dual monitors, maybe another gpu.As you can see the case is not decided, but I am leaning toward the obsidian 605d simply because I like how it looks and for future upgrades.

Also any suggestions on a monitor? I will in the next two or so weeks be upgrading that, prefer 24+ inch.

Yes it will fit the socket, it's mostly aimed at that socket anyway.
RAM: G.Skill Sniper Low Voltage 8G 1600mhz (this worth it/work with the board?)
Yes it will work, good choice.

If you're planning to add a second card I wouldn't buy a TX650 now, especially since everything in your system has lots of OC headroom.
    Guru3D's review:
    GeForce GTX 560 Ti
    > On your average system the card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit.

GeForce GTX 560 Ti in 2-way SLI
    > A second card requires you to add another ~175 Watts. You need a 700+ Watt power supply unit if you use it in a high-end system (800+ to a KiloWatt is recommended if you plan on any overclocking).
800w+ is silly even if you're OC'ing, that part I don't agree with. A good 750w should provide enough juice for 2 cards + OC'ing + any future expansions. See if you can find a good deal with Corsair or Seasonic.

aye, the 750W modular corsair is a great option.
