Possible to connect to xbox live without using xbox adapter?

hey guys so i want to get back into xbox live gaming but i need an adapter to connect online i cant do it using an Ethernet wire, and i was wondering if it was possible to connect online without using the standard xbl wireless adapter. It goes for about $40 but i didnt want to spend the money and they find out theres a cheap efficient way to connect online. I have a cisco wireless adapter i use for my computer thats a usb however it didnt seem to work when i plugged it into the xbox, thanks
