Putting flags on things before other people is never pointless.

Got a link to this? Sounds super interesting :O

There's no real reason to send people there, all the research they need can be done remotely.

There is nothing important to do on the moon for a person, that can't be done by a remote controlled drone.

The technology does not yet exist for a drone to make profound and thought provoking speeches.

Lack of funding and it's very dangerous as so much can go wrong. The main reason the Space Shuttle has retired is because of how dangerous it is and the fatalities it caused. Is it really worth all those unwanted deaths just to say we can do it?

I'd rather the funding be spent else where for now, unless it would be beneficial to the human race.

Why did the united states never go back to the moon?
Because, like so many other ambitious projects in our country....lack of focus.

On a serious note, It's almost pointless to go back however, I believe there will be trips to the moon in the future that will cost about 100k$

I agree. Space travel will develop exponentially once private industry takes interest. You know what would be 1000x faster though? If Obama told the military that the Andromeda system had WMDs. We'd be living in Star Trek within the decade.
Actually, knowing America it'd be more like WH40k...

Yea but they already put the flag there, why would they want to plant another?

I'm waiting for us to colonize the moon and make underground warrens to hydroponically grow wheat to supply the ever growing population of earth, and turning it into a penal colony before the Lunies decide to throw off the yoke of earth and revolt (/Robert Heinlein).

    Poor drones...

    You will know EVERYTHING.

It's expensive as all bloody hell, and there is nothing to gain for anyone by doing so other than giving a couple people the experience of a lifetime.
