laptop randomly goes to black screen with a green/pink box that moves with the mouse?

I'd say about once every 2-3 days my laptops display goes black only showing a green/pink box that is mouse controllable (moving the mouse moves the box). The sound either buzzes or stopped. I'm totally stumped. It happens when playing video games and when not. Rebooting fixes the issue. Google returns nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

Update your video card driver, that would be my first suspect. However it could be the first sign of a dying video card.

the driver is 100% up to date but the video card could definitely be a possibility. had it for about 4 years.
