After school jobs, 5-10 years ago and now

Hi guys first off im 24 turning 25. All throughout high school from when i was aged 15 i, and 90 percent of my friends all had after school jobs that we went to two or so nights a week.

What i seem to be noticing more and more these days, (especially with new young people applying to my work) is that 18-21 year olds are coming in to interviews in a professional office environment with absolutely no part time work experience.

Not that it matters if they are mature, and educated and can do the role efficiently. But what im wondering and more asking to people still in high school is, how many of you have or did have high school jobs?.

My girlfriend who i met at the job i am at now for example has just turned 20, and she started when she was 18. High achiever in school, and had never had a part time job. which quite honestly suprised me, considering what it was like 10 years ago when i was in high school.

So yeah do you have a part time job with school?. Did you when you were at school?

P.S Not judging!.. just interested as ive noticed a trend.

When I was in high school I didn't. My first job was at 18 when I started college.

The reason I didn't have a job in high school was mainly because transportation issues. I didn't get my license till a week before my 18th birthday and both my parents worked so they couldn't drive me to work. The only places that were in walking distance never called back either.

I graduated high school 10 years ago and a lot of my friends had jobs, mainly cook jobs paying minimum wage. I got my first job at 19 when I was in college but couldn't figure out what I wanted to do, so I had dropped some classes and was only taking 2. It was a part time job at Target working in the back room. Guess what I do now...(2 college degrees later)...work at Target in the back room. lol

My brother who is 6 years younger than me never had a job until just this year after getting his bachelor's degree.

I'm 22 at the moment, started college about 2 years ago and never had a part-time job so far.
Even though the experience from such a job could be an advantage later, I don't really feel the urge to take one.

It's not that weird. When I was in high school 10-15 years ago I knew tons of people who didn't have after school jobs. Some people were too busy with school stuff, either studying or clubs/sports/theater/etc, some people just didn't care, some people didn't have the mobility to get back and forth to one even if they wanted (no car or ride or whatever), etc.

I had a part time job while I was in high school but most of my friends didn't and neither of my sisters did (though my brother currently does.)

Nope, didn't have a job. I valued my free time much too highly and still do. I'm studying in university now and quit my job as a waitress, that I had for about 3 years to dedicate to studies. There is just no way, ever.. no matter how much I'd get paid to make me work more than 8 hours a day or at weekends :P My family and hobbies just outweight any job by so much, I couldn't even compare them

When I was in high school, I was the bus to school, bus home sort. Didn't have a license and lived too far away to reasonably be expected to walk to work. Walking may be healthy, but it's impractical to walk 7 miles to work every afternoon (one way). If it's raining or snowing I'd have to call in or end up stranded somewhere. It just wouldn't work very well.

There arent any jobs. See, you get the attitude of 'Stop being lazy', but then when you find work you get the attitude of 'Stop stealing the few jobs available from people who need the money to live'. You seriously cant win.

Im 16 now, just left school and doing my a levels from home and am currently looking for a part time job, but even tesco isn't hiring anymore. Plus, here you can't drive till you're 17 (and even then, insurance at 17 would be un-affordable), so things have to be local, which is difficult when you live in a shithole which looks like an average place after a zombie apocalypse.

I think a big part of the problem is how competitive the job market is nowadays, I know maybe 20 years ago you could leave high school and skip Uni and get a well paid job, 20 years before that If you got O levels at 16 you could go to uni with that or even become an officer in the military, but now with everyone getting educated and trying for work alot of people will put off working while learning and focus on their education, and obviously some are just lazy

I did the same as you basically, and I applied for work at a CO OP super market in 07 before the credit crunch, and got the job basically instantly, now I hear that even place like Mcdonalds will get 50 people applying for one position

I simply didn't have time for a job. Between family events/weekend trips, sports practice/events, music events/practicing, private lessons, driving school (for half a year or so), homework I suppose, watching my sister, household chores, and my own time for leisure/socialization, I was pretty booked solid. It wasn't until I started coming home after my year at college that I ever got jobs.

Had jobs on the side while at school from 15 year old. My parents wouldn't even let me sit at home, told me I had to learn how to work .

I understand it is different now. Back then I could just choose jobs by pay/own intrest pretty much. Now it's much more take what you can get.

Hell, I'll rather sit at home than work at McD, which is pretty much the only place around here which you can fit into a school schedule.

I've always been work shy. Going to school all day and then doing another few hours at a job at the weekends/after school would have killed me.

I lived for my leisure time; I still do.

Only worked during the summers during the 3 month long summer break, when I was in lower education.
