Dune, though you should read the books, they offer so much more then a movie or series of movies can.
As has been stated Firefly and its move pendant Serenity are really cool and fun.
Bladerunner, while not really about space and ore spacetravel is a really good scifi movie, definatly watch it. (Same goes for Tron, which is about cyberspace rather then space)
The Quiet Earth is not about space or the far future, but about, well being the sole survivor of an experiment gone really wrong. Nevertheless watch it
12 Monkeys is mostly set on earth in more or less our time, but it involves timetravel and is a nice movie.
The 5th Element is a really impressive looking movie about saving all life in the universe in the far future.
As has already been said Gattaca, is about a future society who discriminates anyone who is nor genetically optimized and about a man who wants to go to space despite being not optimized himself.
As for TV-Series, Babylon5 is a really good and well narrated Series.
