If you run wow at 1920x1200 (2 304 000 pixels) and reduce the resolution to 720x576 (414 720 pixels) you do not get 5 times more FPS.
WoW is so light on polygons and geometry detail that the raw texture shading speed of pixels is lot more important, and that scales directly with the screen size. And it's pretty irrelevant in the end anyway since WoW depends lot more on raw CPU power than GPU power.
