    Internet Pages not displaying correctly

Hey all, I'm sure people have seen this before, when instead of loading up regular internet pages, your browser loads the page up in basic format - white background, Times New Roman font, text displayed aligned left in a massive list.

Basically this is happening to me constantly on just a few sites. I've just moved to University so on an unfamiliar connection. Given this is only happening on a few sites (and all browsers) - I was trying to work out if it was a problem my end or theirs.

Assuming it is a problem my end, are there any basic fixes I can try? I've run CCleaner and also deleted my full browser history (Cache, etc), what else can I do?

It's a pretty annoying problem, for example some forums don't have a "Post new thread" button in basic text format. TV-links doesn't actually let me click the links to take me offsite to videos in basic format. It's pretty frustrating.

Thanks to anyone who can provide some help, in advance

Sounds like it blocks the CSS file (basically, the code file that controls layout, colours, fonts, etc). I'd advise to have a chat with a technician/IT-guy at your University to have it resolved.

Hmm... if that was the case, wouldn't all sites be displaying like this? As it stands, only some sites do, others are fine. Problem is that where I'd usually fix this by reloading page/clearing cache, these sites which are problematic are staying problematic.

Well, it could be the case that some CSS files are blocked because they match a filter criteria (thus getting blocked). It might be a certain word that triggers it, or that certain sites are listed.

    (It's an honest guess.)

Can you give a list of the sites you are trying to visit? My guess is you are trying to go to sites they have on their blocked list.

So far I've found two -

    http://www.tv-links.eu/
    http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/

TV links I could understand if it was blocked, however forums aimed specifically at students, being blocked by a University doesn't seem logical. :S

I appreciate both of your help

Well, hard to tell. Some spam filters can be... well, buggy.

Here is the CSS file for tv-links.eu anyway: http://pastebin.com/QiRQ3Wc0

It differs from browser to browser afaik. For Firefox, I believe you can just force the website to use a custom template. Read more here: http://www-archive.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html

(Edit: Noticed that site might not be accurate/outdated.)

    Hmm, that looks confusing!

Interesting note - through use of a proxy site, these sites are working fine.
