+1 for Avast
I use microsoft essentials never had a prob, been using 6 years
micro$oft security essentials ftw! (granted you have a valid copy of windows)
I was careless enough to get my WoW account hacked once, and an updated AVG (free) found nothing wrong with my computer. Tested Spybot after that, found a trojan immediately. AVG also does a TON of I/O operations and disk writes, constantly, forever. I'd avoid AVG.
Now I'm only using MSE.

Anyone with half a brain here knows that microsoft security essentials is the only decent free one around
AVG is by far the worst
Avast is cpu/mem hungry
Kaspersky sucks
Anything by Norton is a joke
Macafee is just as bad.
Microsoft security essentials, keeps itself to itself but never compromises protection.
I use Avast and AVG here, could someone tell me why AVG is supposedly bad?
Except it is surprisingly flawed even if you have the paid for version.
Just use MSE.

The definitions are weak and have been demonstrated to not pickup on new viruses for months on end several times now.
Microsoft Security Essentials is probably the best free one.
AVG Free is awful.
MSE is good for a free product, but it does tend to lag behind on the zero day threats. Avira Free is the best well-rounded free AV, in my experience. Malwarebytes to back you up for on-demand scans.
Virus Bulletin does a great monthly test of the paid and free services. Worth a look, if you really want to get into it.
