    Remade version of monk

  2. #22
Considering that we know for a fact it's going to be a clothy character of some type, considering that many existing Monk skills have been rolled into the new Guardian, considering the class will not come from Cantha (only place to find a clothy outside of the core classes) or Elona, considering that both Necromancers and Elementalists have already been revealed, the final class is almost guaranteed to be Mesmer.

...Unless they completely over-haul Monks and make them like D&D Monks, that is. Melee cloth FTW?

Go with the fantasy 'Monk' archetype and have a deeply spiritual melee specialist.

I can't see what their weapon choices would be beyond staff and scepter/focus, given the rest of the weapon line-up in Guild Wars 2. Also, I can't see many Asura or Charr being 'deeply spiritual.'

I'm fairly sure it'll be Mesmer or some similar offshoot. It's the most 'original' profession that would push Guild Wars 2 farther from the standard fantasy archetypes.

GW is pretty much the only lore to ever have monks restricted to "healers", they can be anything from kung-fu masters to nature-lovers, divine warriors, ect... being a monk by no means implies "healer".

[SPOILER ALERT TO EDGE OF DESTINY BOOK]

mesmer, 100% sure there is no doubt. Queen Jennah is a mesmer, mesmer was the fresh and original class for GW1 and is pretty much Guild wars' special lore profession no one else has. also they said the last profession will be a more complex profession and its a scholar (cloth armor). a profession that manipulates their enemies to indirectly destroy them certainly fits the bill

in addition the arena in Lion's Arch uses mesmer magic to project all the sounds in the arena to the audience and queen jennah [SPOILER ALERTS TO EDGE OF DESTINY]
uses illusion magic to trick the branded ogres away from Ebonhawke when she creates a giant Kralkatorrik illusion

the other thing mesmers did was shutdown in Dom and illusion had alot of degen and trickery (think ineptitude and clumsiness, mistrust, fragility and the like) theres plenty to do besides interrupt and energy burns/manipulation

plus energy being used for dodging still lets an energyburn utility skill be around to stop enemies from dodging

No but in Guild Wars monk would be the healer and it would be far too dramatic an overhaul to use monks as the returning class when and completely, 100% change what they were. Remember, there are no friendly targeted spells and Guardians are handling the smiting aspect of the original monk.

I'm not arguing that monks elsewhere weren't more specifically melee combat oriented, I'm saying that that's not how the monks in guild wars 1 were.

Yes, I'm saying that GW2 could do NEW things with old classes. They won't straight-up copy-paste any class from GW1 into GW2.

But they wont... As I said that would be too big of a change.

Skill-switching on the fly wasn't big enough of a change?
Dynamic events wasn't big enough of a change?
A persistant world wasn't big enough of a change?

It could theoretically be a monk, but I think we'll see a Mesmer.

Except that all 3 of those are changes to the actual game, not the profession.

I am tempted to think its not a mesmer. Why? you ask..

Well... after all this time, and all this speculation, I find it strange to think that they wouldnt have confirmed such an obvious class. Perhaps there will be a suprise.

Are you working for ANet now? You know exactly how far they're willing to go? What they will and will not change?

I'm guessing a Mesmer with a different flavour. Seems like the more recently announced professions, specifically the Guardian, Engineer and Thief, are more of a conglomeration of a few different professions from GW1's professions, which leads me to believe the final number will be half returns and half new, 'remixed' professions.

I could definitely see a Mesmer with a sort of druidic twist, or maybe borrowing from the lightweight and flamboyant combat style of the Dervish. A scythe-wielding telekinetic psychic could be pretty interesting. I do recall Arenanet saying the final profession was extremely controversial...

    It's going to be Monk.

Look at GW1 Warrior to GW2 Warrior? How much difference is there? A few new abilities? They're essentially the same thing.

GW1 Ranger to GW2 Ranger? Still pretty much the same, just with melee abilities (not that big of a change because of dual professions).

Assassin to Thief? Nah, they're pretty much the same...

    Eles, Necros, all the same.

Guardian/ Engineers implement mechanics from classes that aren't returning (Ritualist and Smite Monk), nothing drastic about that "change."

Changing a Caster/ Healer Monk to a Light Armored Melee Oriented on is a MASSIVE change for the Profession as a whole.

Every other major change has been Gameplay or Environment oriented.

I'm going with the crowd and placing my vote on Mesmer as well. It feels like another caster class is what's lacking at this point, and they have been mentioned in the books and all.

If it is anything like the original GW ele (and it seems to be) it will be much more mage than shaman.
