The thing that sets Amnesia apart from other 'horror' games, from what I can tell, is that it knows that monsters are scarier if you can't see them. But--and this is a big but (mind out of the gutter)--that is most effective when the player has a powerful and/or overactive imagination, because that's what's really providing the horror. Not that horror-ish (besides Silent Hill 2, which I consider the best horror game of all time), but the puzzles are great and the stories likewise

I agree that all horror games are enhanced if you have a livid or wild imagination. Especially the adventure horror games like Amnesia, Silent Hill and Call of Cthulhu. But then again, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a game I find myself getting scared to all the time, because of the "... you don't know what's out there" feeling that is everywhere"

I guess I never really understood the appeal in being scared. Aside from the feeling of adrenaline rush that you get, being actually afraid of something gives me no pleasure. So, I just don't let myself become afraid when I can help it. Certainly not of something as silly as a video game.
