ad = attack damage which modifies auto-attacks
ap = ability power which makes your abilities hit harder

The first answer is extremely misleading...

    Just to clarify:

AD means Attack Damage. AD increases the damage of your auto-attacks and the damage of some abilities.
AP means Ability Power and increases the damage/effect of some abilities.

Mouse over an ability to bring up the tooltip. You'll notice that some abilities have orange parentheses and numbers, while others are green.
Orange means the ability scales with your AD and green means it scales with your AP.

I think that AP has more of a cyan coefficient, rather than a green one.

No. You stated AP increases abilities and AD increases auto attacks.

It's entirely possible for AD to increase ability damage.

Yes, which is how there are caster ADs, such as Urgot, and melee APs, such as Akali, or a number of hybrids you could build as AP carries, like Skarner.

You should go to Solomid.net or mobafire.com, they both have a lot of guides for every champion, but I would tell you to go over the WHOLE guide before you go into a game with said champion, as a lot of them explain what items to get against what team.
Also some of them have tips how to use your skills "right".
