    How exactly will PvP work?

    I'm a bit unclear on how PvP will work in the game. Is there world PvP or is it all instanced? Can you kill other players anytime, anywhere? Since theres no factions like horde/alliance, if you make a level one character will you be able to fight level ones or something?

    To the question of world pvp/ganking, I'm 99.99% sure that there will be none.
    It wouldn't make ANY sense. They want people to be happy when they see people walking around the game world and cooperate, so why would they ever enable something as un cooperative as ganking?

    The closest you'll get to World PvP will be World vs World vs World PvP, which is completely separate from the PvE part of the game.

    ArenaNet hasn't released a full detailed reveal of all of the PvP aspects in GW2, but there is a lot of information on the wiki that can help give you a rough idea of how both structured and world PvP will work.

    You cant just kill anybody you see on the street in the PVE portion of the game. There's no "PVP realm" you can gank anybody anytime anywhere. What there is is WvWvW where its your server vs 2 other servers in a very large zone or series of zones. There will be standard DE objectives that are PVE in nature with the potential of PVP interference from the other side. As an example maybe your side has a DE to escort the siege engineers to a hilltop to setup a catapult to bombard fortifications. PVE right? well Enemies will have a DE at the same time to kill said siege engineers and their escorts, aka you. If you've ever played or seen the RvR gameplay from Dark Age of Camelot picture that with upgraded graphics and mechanics that fit GW2 and you'll have a pretty decent idea.

    Still players have to opt in by porting into the WvWvW zone. Some may choose to level up there others may just join when they feel like it but your never forced into either being always on guard to be ganked(pvp realm) or only rarely haveing targets to kill because nobody flags up (pve realm). In addition to WvWvW GW2 will also have your fairly standard hot joinable PVP equivalents to battle grounds, battle fronts or whatever your game of choice called them.

    No open PVP is that would destroy the whole DE idea
    Also gear in GW2 is 2nd rated and not a big thing...there will be minor bonuses but as far as that...so the only gear grind will be either if you are a MIN/MAXER and want that +1 str or +1 dex since you wont be able to have such a great difference from another player.The only gear grind will be for LOOKS only.So no pvp fights against season 10000000 vs season 2 geared people.if you can handle the pressure and have the skill its up to you to beat the TOP DOGS
    ARENA LIKE PVP

    WvWvW pvp

    In arena pvp you will be getting to MAX level and have access TO EVERYTHING skill wise and gear wise in order to play
    so if you have an arena team and don't want to run around and do stuff you team up,enter quee and boom PVP with not advantage beyond your skill(or the class balance but no one knows yet about that staff so... :P

    In Battleground pvp its like arena in term of gear and skills BUT you have some things that you need to do like capture points etc.Also you will have the option to destroy environments and open alternative paths in the zone,the example given is the CLOCK TOWER where people rush to capture some points BUT there are also 2 TREBUCHET one in EACH TEAM BASE and people might want to man them and shoot with them.if a building is destroyed and have a capture point that point will vanish(the clock tower point for instance :P )and if you have a wall that blocks a passage and someone destroy it then you have a new path to take in order to go to places in the map,also players will be able to make private servers in the game(think an FPS style of servers inside GW2)where they will be able to have an open invitation to anyone or put locks and passes so only people that know them will be able to enter and play against them.

    WvWvW pvp in that type you have a conflict between 3 servers in a place called MISTS,which is a place that connects different dimensions,if people used to play DND in the old days,its something like the fog in RAVEN-LOFT that connects different worlds,anyway in that zone there will be 4 zones
    1 for every server and one zone in the midle,in every server zone players will be able to build fortresses and will have to defend their places against the others,from what i have read there will be PVE objects too...for instance if the other server attacks the mines that power with iron the forts then people will have to take them back in order to open the supply lines again and keep the flow of ore coming and other things like that.Finally the battle will be lasting for 2 weeks at the end of the 2 weeks a winner will be emerging(no sure how at the moment,i suppose with a total annihilation type or something)and the game will be teaming you up with 2 other servers in order to go against them(i suppose there will be a ranking system too so you wont end up with the TOP PVP server in GW2 for instance)the winning server will be getting a BIG PVE buff for the next 2 weeks till the next battle ends,i haven't understood how will leveling will work there or gear BUT i suppose you will be leveling normally there too...and since each level will be needing around 90mins after a certain level end game will come pretty fast


    From what i have heard about GW2 this game basically will be 2 in 1.1 for PVE and 1 for PVP and since the gear is not a thing of great need the only thing those games will have in common will be class balance and the fact that you will be able to hop from PVP to PVE asap

    We dont have alot of info on someaspects of WvWvW. For example while we know there will be some PVE benifit for wining WvW, we dont know yet what exactly the benifits will be or how they are measured out. Are they a reward for the next 2 weeks for wining or are they something transitory like you gain X for as long as your server controlls the iron mine, or are they some mix of the two? they just havent given us all that info yet. They also have not told us what victory conditions will be. Presumably there will be some form of point system and the top scoring server wins but it could be who holds the most territory at the end of the cycle, who held key points the longest or some other system for determining victory altogeather.

    They have however indicated there will be some form of ranking system for servers and the system will try to match your server with others of similar ranking. IF you win your ranking goes up, loose, well should be obvious. Either way consistant victorys will see you faceing the best servers so you have a challange and constant losses you will eventualy win as you drop so low that the other servers are just as bad if not worse than yours. However once the rankings form and stabalize you shouldnt ever find yourself being the worst server on the list geting WTFStomped by the best server.

    They have also indicated gear will be handled in WvW the same way it will in pve. Doing easy events such as a simple escort may earn you karma to spend at a vendor while more difficult ones such as takeing a key fortress may award an actual piece of gear. you may also find something through random loot off fallen foes. This wont be the gear the player/npc was wearing, just a random loot rolls like killing anything in pve would.

    Actually WvWvW pvp isn't in the mists... it's actually in just misc area X, because they were saying in an interview how in WvWvW pvp you're using your actual character which is why you'll get loot drops and experience, and learn new moves and etc.

    However, the structured pvp (aka conquest pvp) will be in the mists where you are just playing as a random dead dude, and have access to best armor/weapons and all your profs skills and are bumped to max lv

    World PvP takes place in the Mists, a proto-reality between worlds and realms such as Tyria. It will be accessible to characters almost immediately from character creation.     In terms of numbers, there is no defined limit to the number of players accessing World PvP for a world at the same time.
