If you like acoustic songs then get an acoustic. If you like song w/ electric then get electric. Don't base it on skill required, both will take time.

Takamine makes some really nice cheap acoustic guitars.

    Learn with an acoustic.

Regarding acoustic vs. electric. It's tough. Acoustic is definitely harder to learn on than electric (mostly because all affordable acoustic guitars are constructed VERY poorly, hindering your ability to play because it's counterproductive on your learning), but this can definitely boost your overall technique and strengths when you do end up switching over to electric (kind of like weightlifting with heavy weights). But unless you're some prodigy or plan on becoming professional, I'd just recommend you to go straight onto electric.

As for what you should look into? Ibanez, Jackson, ESP LTD, and Epiphone are excellent beginner brands with good cost to quality values, IMO.

If you want to learn guitar to play your favorite rock and metal songs, just get a 300-400 dollar fender-whatever or Ibanez and you'll be fine for years.

If you want to learn guitar to be precise, clean and deliberate with the most demanding guitar music out there, get an acoustic and start devoting your free time to emulating perfection (John Williams) with scales, theory and "beginner" classical guitar. It's good to start on a ~300 acoustic. Fender makes decent ones, and Washburn isn't bad either.

If you want to just dick around with some songs for fun here and there, pick up a 100 dollar beach guitar.
