Currently using a Modem with a wireless router built into it (SMCD3GNV) and want to use my old router (WRT54G2) to extend my wireless network but unsure how to do so. Anyone knowledgeable on the subject?

The only way to really "extend" your wireless network is with wireless repeaters.
You could setup your old router as a separate access point somewhere else in the house, but you'd have to manually switch to it when you're closer in order to utilize the better signal.
