Patch 9.2 PTR - Blizzard Updates on Double Legendary Timeframe

Hello all,

Thanks for everyone’s feedback on the Enlightened Legendary belts and memories, and on the issue of when you can obtain them and what activities they require. We have some changes coming to a future PTR build that I’d like to talk about a bit.

First, what are we doing? The Belt of Unity is moving from the Enlightened reputation and into the campaign quest for Zereth Mortis. You’ll be able to obtain it at the end of Chapter 7 of the Zereth Mortis campaign, which we hope will feel like a nice crowning accomplishment. The Memory of Unity is remaining on the Enlightened reputation vendor, and will remain an account-wide unlock like other Legendary Memories from Shadowlands, but will now additionally require that you’ve completed Chapter 7 in order to purchase it. This Memory means that when your second, third, or tenth character is ready to start Eternity’s End that they’ll be able to craft an Enlightened Legendary right away. The new questing requirement is being added to head off any feeling of needing to rush ahead to Revered for progression on your main character. We’re also still debating some other possible changes to the overall structure of Zereth Mortis rewards, but I don’t have concrete details to share on those yet.

Some folks have asked why there’s a delay in acquiring a second legendary at all. The answer there is that we have goals for your characters to grow over the course of the patch, allowing them to overcome challenges they couldn’t initially overcome. One specific example here is the difficulty of Sepulcher of the First Ones: by keeping the Enlightened Legendary a little bit in The Future from the raid’s launch, we can tune the raid at a difficulty that allows early progression to be bolstered by additional power once players start hitting stumbling blocks. If this power was instead available to your characters on the first day, tuning would have to take that into account for people who expect the first few weeks to be challenging, and that would in turn deprive many raids of what we think will be a fun and enjoyable boost in power after striving as far as they can without it.

It’s important to us that there’s a pretty level playing field with the Enlightened Legendary in terms of when different players obtain it. We want it to be an impactful moment of growth for your characters, getting to change the rules of how they play the game for the rest of Eternity’s End. Our initial plans of putting it on the Enlightened reputation had this intent, in that we were planning to distribute most of the reputation gains on campaign quests and on quests that players would do once or twice a week, but we hear you that this structure still felt unsatisfying for players whose free time lends itself more to periodic long sessions than for frequent shorter ones. We feel that moving the Enlightened Legendary into the quest campaign will be even more egalitarian while still providing a very satisfying growth moment.

As always, we’re still open to and listening to feedback here, so once the changes go up, please do continue to tell us how you feel about them.

Good point, yeah, sorry about that. Chapter 7 will be available on the third week after the Mythic raid opens. So there will be two full weeks of Mythic raiding during which nobody can have two legendaries, after which they should be available to everyone.

Totally fair question. We looked at what slots players have crafted legendaries in, and tried to pick the slot we thought would disrupt as few people as possible. Also, given that tier sets are back in Eternity’s End, we want to avoid putting this new Unity legendary in any slot that conflicts with tier gear. As with many things in design, there’s not an objective right or wrong choice here, but that was the thinking behind picking the Waist slot.

Not having to farm? Sweet. Five weeks wait? Ehhh, a bit of a shame for what is a patch-defining feature.

    Overall? Pretty cool, I suppose.

Edit: It seems double leggos were always going to unlock around this time anyway, so all this change really does is remove the need to do dailies/WQs. Fair play, Blizzard!

I guess they show that they started to listen to feedback.
Closing behind rep is worse than getting it on week X after finishing campaign.
    Good Good.

good first step, keep doing that and don't stop.

So essentially the second leggos is for when the world first race is 100% over then. I can get the reasoning behind it, not sure if I agree with Blizzard wanting that but I get it.

Very nice to see well done.

That's one solution, although it has to be said that this will mean many mythic fights will be OBLITERATED in week 3, which makes progression for the mid-tier guilds a bit of an awkward thing. I guess it benefits the lower-tier mythic raiding guilds most, and that's probably a majority - added to that the non-mythic raiding guilds who might be struggling, and I suppose that the bottom line comes out in the black for most people. It's just that there's a substantial amount of people outside of that for whom this will be a little weird. Will that be an actual problem? Maybe, maybe not. We'll have to see how they feel about it.

At least it won't impact the race, which is very, very important.

I don't think they will all be open by week three are they? I know they are staggering the raid.

I have been saying these developers are egalitarians for years now, so it's validating to see them admit it. Straight from the horses mouth as to why the game is in the shape it's in.

From what I understand, mythic is not staggered. And the double legs become available three weeks after mythic opens, which is 1-2 weeks after the world first race concludes.

Sounds good to me since it's an account wide unlock.

How many people that will quit after 1 month are going to stay subbed longer just because they get a 2nd legendary....

Such a horribly lazy, generic take. You can do better than that...

    Good job whiners.
So instead of being able to get this after two-three weeks by engaging in content in Zereth Mortis now we all have to wait 7 weeks.
I like that it removes the pressure to max out rep gains every day, but it's a damn shame this pushes getting double legendary (which is going to be adding a whole new dimension to gearing) that far down the line.

Wowhead did an article where they showed it takes about 4 weeks to get the necessary rep if you do everything that's available because there isn't a way to farm rep (you get no rep by collecting cyphers). If you're human, use the darkmoon fair buff and the craftable repbuff from inscription you could cut it down to 3 weeks to have it unlocked when mythic opens.

Also it isn't 7 weeks. Raid opens usally 2 weeks after release, 1 week of nomrla+heroic and then 2 weeks of mythic. So that's 5 weeks of doing just the campaign instead of 3-4 weeks of doing everything.

While there's nothing wrong with being "egalitarian" for a large mmo like this, the problems are the methods being used.

I guess it's a good thing they are communicating this time. Previously nothing would've happened and guilds would have hard commited into doing rep grind every day. Now it's largely doing the campaign and some dailies to reach revered by chapter 7. Still blows that it's time-gated and shows they got still a lot of things to figure out till it's a good game again.

Guess this also means they expect the raid to be cleared in one or two resets. Not unresonable, considering every raid for quite a while has. But this time we have 2 end bosses and 3 totally untested bosses in the raid. I would think bosses have been overtuned at the end, so we don't get another Xavius. But would be hilarious if the raid didn't get cleared in the first 2 weeks. EU vs US debate would never stop, cause would think the 2 legendaries make most fights trivial if they are tuned for one legendary.

Now they only have to learn to interpret feedback. It wasn't the aqcuisition method that people objected to as much as the time gating. If anything the misunderstood on purpose and timegated it even more. I find it hard to believe that they could be this tone deaf and this stupid.

Nice work, I like the retrospective. Blizzard have finally achieved what many ideologists sought: starting with egalitarianism where everyone has an equal opportunity and ending in socialism where everyone gets the same outcome.

Awesome change. Gotta give them credit for listening, tied to the quest chain, account-wide, no horrible grind. Perfect!
