Patch 7.2 - Cathedral of Eternal Night



The Cathedral of Eternal Night can be found on the top of the Tomb of Sargeras in the newly revamped Broken Shore zone. In this new dungeon, you’ll assist Illidan and Maiev in making sure that the Aegis of Aggramar, one of the five Pillars of Creation, is properly sealed to help protect the Broken Shore against the Legion. We’ve created this dungeon preview and guide to prepare you for what’s to come in the Cathedral of Eternal Night.

Boss Strategies

Agronox
Agronox once served the night elf priestesses at the Temple of Elune, but became corrupted after the Legion invaded the cathedral.

  • All
    • If you are targeted by Choking Vines, run 20 yds away from the bloom immediately.
    • Avoid standing too close to allies when Fulminating Lashers appear, as they explode when they reach their target.
  • Tank
    • Keep active mitigation up before Timber Smash occurs. Once you’re knocked into the air, use charges to help avoid fall damage and return to the boss.
    • Keep the boss facing away from the group.
  • DPS
    • Defeat adds quickly, using crowd control when necessary.
  • Healer


Thrashbite the Scornful
Thrashbite is a foe that destroys ancient artifacts and knowledge as he flattens bookshelves.

Domatrax is an unhinged fel lord that tears open portals and unleashes demons set on destroying the Aegis of Aggramar.

  • All
    • Use the protection provided by Aegis of Aggramar sparingly. If it’s drained of all its energy, its aura will fail.
    • Avoid being hit by Felsoul Cleave, as it deals high damage and drains the Aegis of Aggramar by 50%.
    • Stand within the Aegis of Aggramar during Chaotic Energy to avoid being killed.
    • Save defensive and healing cooldowns for Frenzy.
  • Tank
    • Turn the boss away from the group to avoid them getting hit with Felsoul Cleave.
  • DPS


Mephistroth
Mephistroth took his place as the cathedral’s leader after the Legion's invasion. He is a dangerous Nathrezim, only trailing Tichondrius and Anetheron in terms of power.

Phases

    • Repeats until Mephistroth reaches 100% energy

    • Mephistroth fades into the shadows, becoming invisible to players.
    • Stack on Illidan as needed to soak damage.
    • Phase 1 will repeat once Illidan removes Mephistroth from the shadows.

    • Don’t stand in Chaotic Magic from Carrion Swarm.
    • Move away from green circle when Demonic Upheaval is cast.
    • Use personal defensive cooldowns to negate Dark Solitude damage.
  • Tank
    • Pick up the Aegis of Aggramar.
    • Face boss away from the middle of the room to reduce Carrion Swarm impact.
    • Face Aegis of Agrammar towards Shadow Orbs during Shadow Fade.
  • DPS
    • Focus down Shadows of Mephistroth in Phase 2.
    • Melee should avoid standing in front of the shadows.
    • Ranged should stay stacked in middle behind tank.
  • Healer
    • Creeping Shadows damage will increase as Phase 2 progresses.

The upper chambers of the Tomb of Sargeras were once a place of worship to Elune. Since the Legion's invasion, fel minions have desecrated this holy place, twisting it into their own image. Now, this site will host a battle that could turn the tide of the invasion. While the Armies of Legionfall engage the fel army directly, a small group of heroes infiltrates the upper reaches of the cathedral in a desperate hope to return the Aegis of Aggramar to its resting place.

Agronox
This ancient served the night elves priestesses of the Temple of Elune, tending the beautiful Hanging Gardens. But after the malevolence of the Legion infected the Cathedral, the guardian absorbed fel energy through his roots. Now the twisted Agronox spreads corruption throughout the sanctuary he once protected, believing he has finally achieved his ideal state.

  • Overview - Agronox corrupts the garden he once tended and turns it against players. Quickly defeat his Lasher minions to avoid being overwhelmed. Run from Choking Vines before you are strangled. Poisonous Spores inflict increasing amounts of damage over time. On Mythic difficulty, Agronox summons Nourishing Lashers and restores his health via Nature's Infusion.

  • Poisonous Spores - The fauna of the Hanging Gardens erupt in a colorful but deadly cloud, inflicting 26,000 Nature damage every 2 sec. This effect stacks.
  • Timber Smash - With a slam of his mighty bark-covered fists, Agronox deals 2,750,000 Physical damage to his current target and knocks them back.
  • Choking Vines - Vines lash to the throat of a player inflicting 195,000 Nature damage every second until they are more than 20 yards from the deadly bloom. This effect increases by 10% with every tick.
  • Fulminating Lashers - Agronox calls forth a swarm of explosive Fulminating Lashers from the dense fauna of the Fel Gardens.
    • Floral Fulmination - Fulminating Lashers detonate when they reach their target, inflicting 1,250,000 Nature damage to all enemies within 5 yards.
  • Succulent Lashers - Dripping with toxins, Succulent Lashers spring from the grounds of the Fel Garden at Agronox's command.
    • Succulent Secretion - Bursts with slime, inflicting 1,455,000 Nature damage to all players within 8 yards.
      This effect creates pools that inflict 1,002,500 Nature damage to players within the pools every second.

Thrashbite the Scornful
Smashspite's detestable brother, Thrashbite, has been dispatched to wipe out the mortals entering the cathedral's grand library. The dimwitted mo'arg lacks any respect for knowledge or learning, feeling petty satisfaction as he crashes through ancient artifacts and tramples priceless tomes.

  • Overview - Thrashbite the Scornful favors imprecise, sweeping attacks with little regard for his surroundings. Trick him into going toe to toe with something thicker than himself, though, and he just might lose his balance. Beware: this ancient library contains many magical tomes with unpredictable enchantments! On Mythic difficulty, Thrashbite unleashes the powers of the Wondrous Library each time he collides with a bookcase, bringing ancient animated tomes into the fray.

  • Pulverizing Cudgel - Slams the ground with his massive cudgel, inflicting 750,000 Physical damage to all enemies and 3,005,000 Physical damage to all enemies within 15 yards.
  • Scornful Gaze - Thrashbite the Scornful focuses his gaze on a target.
    Thrashbite performs a Scornful Charge in the direction of the affected player when Scornful Gaze expires.
    • Scornful Charge - Impacts the first player he comes into contact with, inflicting 3,005,000 Physical damage and knocking them back, or destroying any bookshelves with which he collides.
  • Heave Cudgel - Thrashbite hurls his mighty cudgel around the outer ring of the library, dealing 10,400,000 Physical damage to all players in its path.
  • Wondrous Library -
    • Satirical Animated Book - An animated, magical tome overflowing with stiflingly satirical writing.
      • Stifling Satire - As the tomes open, all sound is magically absorbed into the ancient pages, silencing all players for 5 sec.
      • Arcane Bolt - Inflicts 150,000 Arcane damage to the current enemy target.
    • Fictional Animated Book - An ancient work of fiction springs to life, the magical runes leaping from the page to fetter would-be readers.
      • Fettering Fiction - Runes spring forth from the magical books, slowing all players.
      • Arcane Bolt - Inflicts 150,000 Arcane damage to the current enemy target.
    • Biographical Animated Book - This account of a long-forgotten sorcerer's life can prove to be dangerously beguiling.
      • Beguiling Biography - Entrancing narrative charms a random player. This effect breaks if their health goes below 30%.
      • Arcane Bolt - Inflicts 150,000 Arcane damage to the current enemy target.

Domatrax
With the Aegis of Aggramar socketed back into its cradle, Domatrax leads an onslaught of demons to destroy the relic.

  • Overview - Upon reaching 90% and 50% health, the Fel Lord opens up additonal portals to allow greater numbers of the Legion's soldiers to pour into the tomb. The Aegis of Aggramar provides protection against the Legion's attacks, but if drained of all its energy, this aura will fall. On Mythic difficulty, if the Fel Portal Guardians are not destroyed within a specific time, an overfiend emerges.

      • Turn the Fel Lord away from the party and the Aegis to avoid having them get hit with Felsoul Cleave.
      • At 25% health, Domatrax goes into a Frenzy.
  • Domatrax - This Fel Lord leads the onslaught against the Aegis of Aggramar.
    • Felsoul Cleave - Inflicts 1,200,000 Fire damage to enemies within 20 yards in a cone in front of the caster, and drains the Aegis of Aggramar by 50%.
    • Chaotic Energy - Chaotic energies arc from the caster, inflicting 4,200,000 Fire damage to all enemies.
    • Frenzy - Increases the caster's attack speed by 50% and the Physical damage it deals by 50% for 2 min.
  • Fel Portal Guardian - Defeat these guardians to close their portals and prevent additional demons from entering the battle.
    • Approaching Doom - Something large approaches the portal. If the guardian is not destroyed before it arrives, it will emerge from the nether.
      • Searing Overfiend -
        • Searing Presence - Heat radiates from the fiend, inflicting 300,000 Fire damage every 3 sec.
  • Aegis of Aggramar - The Aegis of Aggramar protects all allies within its radius by reducing damage received by 90% but also reduces damage inflicted by 75% and healing done by 75%.
    Getting hit by Felsoul Cleave or standing within the Aegis' protection drains the shield over time.
  • Stage One: The March of the Imps - Upon reaching 90% health, Domatrax tears open portals allowing imps to enter the fray.
    • Hellblaze Imp -
      • Fel Blast - Fires a fel blast at a random enemy, inflicting 705,950 Fire damage to all enemies within 4 yards of the impact.
  • Stage Two: The Burning Hordes - Upon reaching 50% health, Domatrax tears open portals summoning felguard into the battle. On Mythic difficulty, shivan emerge from the portals.
    • Hellblaze Felguard -
      • Searing Rend - Inflicts 1,235,000 Fire damage to all enemies in a cone within 10 yards in front of the caster and leaves fire puddles in the area that inflict 70,000 Fire damage every 1 sec.

      • Shadow Sweep - Inflicts 1,200,000 Shadow damage to enemies within melee distance of the caster and knocks them back.

Mephistroth
Mephistroth orchestrates the Legion's invasion from the Broken Shores. With the forces of Azeroth pushing against his front line, Mephistroth has fallen back to the Cathedral of Eternal Night, where he will employ all his cunning to ensure the heroes fail in securing the Aegis of Agrammar.

  • Overview - Mephistroth uses shadow magic to attack the party until he reaches 100% energy. Once his energy is full, Mephistroth fades away and strikes at the heroes from the shadows. During this, Illidan must be protected with the Aegis of Aggramar long enough for him to pull the dreadlord back into the light. On Mythic difficulty, fel bats fly in through the windows during Shadow Fade and assault the heroes with Fel Blaze.

      • Allies take increasing damage from Creeping Shadows while Mephistroth is hidden.

      • Carrion Swarm is a heavy attack that needs to be faced away from the party.
      • During Shadow Fade, face the Aegis of Agrammar towards Shadows Orbs to protect Illidan.
  • Aegis of Aggramar - Face the Aegis of Agrammar towards Shadows of Mephistroth to protect Illidan from Shadow Blast.
  • Stage One: Mephistroth -
    • Carrion Swarm - A cresting wave of chaotic magic splashes over enemies in front of the caster, dealing 1,260,000 Shadow damage. It also leaves shadow puddles in the area that inflict 70,000 Shadow damage every 1 sec.
    • Demonic Upheaval - Hurls fel energy at random enemies that places an aura on the targets. When the aura expires, a Fel Spike erupts at the destination, inflicting 1,095,000 Fire damage to nearby enemies and knocking them back as well as inflicting 648,450 Fire damage to enemies within 18 yards.

  • Stage Two: Fades to Shadow -
    • Shadow Fade - Mephistroth fades into the shadows becoming invisible until Illidan can complete his Expel Shadows cast. While in this phase, Shadows of Mephistroth continually appear to assault Illidan to prevent Expel Shadows from being cast.
    • Creeping Shadows - As long as Mephistroth remains in the shadows, the party suffers 20,000 Shadow damage per stack every 1 sec.
    • Illidan Stormrage - Appears during stage two and attempts to reveal Mephistroth.
      • Expel Shadows - Illidan attempts to draw Mephistroth from the shadows. Incoming damage from Shadow Blast interrupts Illidan and lengthens his cast time.
    • Shadow of Mephistroth - Appears during Stage Two and fires Shadow Blasts at Illidan.
      • Shadow Blast - Shadows of Mephistroth appear around Illidan and attempt to interrupt his cast of Expel Shadows. Shadow Blasts that impact enemies inflict 1,800,000 Shadow damage to the target.
    • Dreadwing - Dreadwings fly into the room and harass the party.
      • Fel Blaze - Hurls fel bolts at enemies in front of the caster, dealing 705,600 Fire damage.
