Auction House Live Maintenance
The Auction House is undergoing live maintenance on the North American realms and should return shortly after some performance changes.

Last Saturday, Senior Game Producer Tom Ellis announced that the team would deploy hardware upgrades with this week's maintenance to address the Auction House issues. These upgrades, along with the performance improvements from two days ago, should help alleviate the problem.

haha dang, out of nowhere we're back to raging about Asmongold. Dude really lives rent free in peoples mind's here.

Other than the rage you actually made a good point, the problem was a messed up database and now they're fixing, or fixed it, there should in theory not be a problem even with addons spamming the AH (one would hope).

So they basically increased the server load for this function by a hundred times?
Considering the AH wasn't the most performant thing in the game already who in his right mind would think that this will make things better?
Sorry but as a programmer myself this sounds amateurish.

No. It sounds like a change was made that resulted in tens of millions of rows being created. This isn't problem itself. Databases for decades now have been able to support millions and billions of records efficiently on proper hardware. But if databases grow, the hardware must grow with it (at the very least, storage needs to grow). Databases with billions of rows (let alone millions) need a beast of a CPU and lots of memory to operate at peak performance, which can easily be thousands to millions of simultaneous transactions per second. It is not amateur at all to scale hardware with databases. To use an analogy: one can optimize their bicycle only so much before they need to move to a car.

Whatever they did seems to have worked well in the EU at least.
