Midnight Alpha Datamining - Housing Bundles and Hearthsteel Currency
Midnight Alpha Build 64124 added a new housing bundle string in the game files, further confirming that housing decor will be coming to the shop.

  • HOUSING_MARKET_BUNDLE_PREVIEW_DETAILS - Previewing any Decor will add this bundle to your cart.

As of the current Midnight Alpha build, there are 19 placeholder shop items available for browsing on the WoWDB Housing Hub, with a majority of them appearing spring-themed.

Alongside the bundle string, this build added icon assets for Hearthsteel, a new currency first spotted in the initial Alpha build (Interface/Housing/HousingMarketHearthSteelIcons.BLP).

While nothing is confirmed yet, the Hearthsteel icons look similar to Diablo IV Platinum and Overwatch Coins packaging (tiered bundles with increasing amounts), suggesting that they may arrive as a premium currency tied to Player Housing.

The market functionality is currently disabled on both the 11.2.7 PTR and Midnight Alpha, and the UI and features for it are still a work in progress, so everything should be taken as speculation and is subject to change in future builds. Additionally, please note what Blizzard has said on housing monetization previously:

  • Similar to existing shop offers like pets and mounts, but for decor.
  • Shop items are exclusive and not available through other in-game sources.

The House Editor UI has 2 tabs:

  • Storage - Features all decor, currently available for testing on the 11.2.7 PTR and Midnight Alpha.
  • Catalog - Features decor and decor bundles available for sale on the market.

While the Market tab appears to integrate with the backend of Blizzard's new in-game "Catalog Shop" (added in 11.2.5 to replace the old shop), it appears to have some special features that the shop itself doesn't have. For example, players can place decor through the housing editor to preview it before purchase, and the Market has its own dedicated cart (based on the Trading Post UI). Newly added decor in the Market will also be highlighted until previewed by the player.

Work in progress UI; all data listed is placeholder.

There are also a lot of encrypted decor records on both the 11.2.7 PTR and Midnight Alpha, although it's unclear if they are intended for the shop or are part of a world event like the Lunar Festival. Several bundles contain between 4 and 17 decor items, alongside a few individually encrypted decor pieces, which are likely meant to be sold or unlocked separately. One of these bundles was unencrypted in the first public Alpha build, so we have the item names listed on the WoWDB Housing Site.

As I said in other threads: Been waiting for this news post, since some youtubers made videos speculating about it.

I promised to bring popcorn - this will be good.

    I mean... okay?

We all knew this was coming. Housing had to be financed somehow. Ya'll wanted this. Don't really see the big deal here. If no one buys any of it, they'll get rid of it REAL quick - but we all know that's not going to happen, don't we.

Probably for the screaming and vitriol. You should see the comments on wowhead's post on this topic. Like staring into a sewage pit.

Well..considering that the forum always have some fun discussions whenever something appears in the shop, can be bought by spending RL money etc....I expect some controversy here.

Would be really surprised if people just shrug and go "meh...whatever"

Good attitude, haha..people always scream how stuff is the end of the world and kinda seem to overlook that they can end it, by not buying. So what if others do whatever they want with THEIR OWN money. But some youtube comments were already like "Sad they removed the "spit" emote, so I could use it on people who participate in this"

Obviously they'd add premium decor, I guess I didn't expect them to add an entirely new currency for it but I was fully expecting there to be premium decor in the blizzard store.

As long as you can still get cool decor optainable through gameplay. I couldn't care less that they also add premium decor to the store.

The Blizzard-Adult bootlicking will be enough to keep this around forever. Wow is actually dead now. If the original creators of the game could see what it is now they wouldn't have made it in the first place.

Awesome news, I can't wait to start my own white-privilege neighborhood away from all the low income slums.

You mean the original creators, who added the shop in TBC, right?

I mean...whoever was in charge back then, even without evil Activision etc...they sold a mount on the shop and it made more than Starcraft 2. And you know what? Companies do company things. It needs customers to open the wallet, to make the greed, cashgrabs etc work - so let us not forget to spread the "hate".

It doesn't make any sense to have an internal currency in WOW that is bought with money - the WoW cash shop (unlike Diablo) already works on buying things for real money (aka battle.net balance). If they are going to (and I'm sure they are) sell housing stuff on the cash shop it won't be for some fake currency - it will be for irl money as it is now for other stuff.

This new currency is likely an in game currency (like trader's tender etc).

Not even slightly surprised but honestly did not expect it will have its own currency, lol.

It makes perfect sense from a corporate POV.

You have say, a lamp. And some people are going to think that lamp is just perfect, but if you make that lamp $5, a lot of people are going to go "well that's just a bit too much for just a lamp" and if you put it in a bundle with a similar aesthetic chair and bed and table for $15, a lot of people are going to go "well I don't really want any of these other pieces, just the lamp and I'm definitely not going to pay $15 for the lamp and stuff I don't want".

But if you instead make the lamp 275 housing ducats, and $500 housing ducats are $5, a lot of people will be able to justify that price, they get a lamp and they get 225 currency that they can use in the future the next time there's a specific item they want. And then, 3 months down the line, there's just the perfect table, and that table is also 275 housing ducats, but they only have 225, so they spend another $5 to bump up their currency and you've succesfully sold that lamp and table both for $5 and also made it very likely that they'll spend more money a few months later when their currency is at an awkward amount but there's something they'd really like.

But this also doesn't stop you from selling, for regular price points rather than currency, themed furniture bundles, AND big ticket individual items like some outdoor pagoda or elaborate fountain or whatever.

Those are store assets. A purely in-game currency wouldn't need a bunch of pseudo 3D pictures in different bundled amounts with drop shadows, it'd just need a bunch of in-game icon assets. These are what they use with bundles and stuff:

If I were Blizzard not only would I introduce a new currency bought with real €£ only usable for housing decor, I would also allow players to sell their decor to other players for the same currency in a special decor AH which takes a 5% cut on every sale like the gold AH.
