Blizzard Entertainment Begins Closed Beta Test for World of Warcraft®: Cataclysm™

The company has started issuing invitations to participate in the testing process to a wide range of players from around the world who signed up via their Battle.net® accounts. While enjoying an early look at the game, beta testers will provide valuable feedback to help Blizzard Entertainment find bugs, address balance issues, and polish the new content.

"Our focus with Cataclysm has been to build on the knowledge we've gained through the previous expansions to deliver the best, most compelling World of Warcraft content for our players to date," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Gathering focused feedback during the beta test will go a long way in helping us reach that goal when we launch Cataclysm later this year."

Cataclysm is the third expansion for World of Warcraft, the most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game in the world. The first two expansions, The Burning Crusade® and Wrath of the Lich King®, each shattered PC game sales records upon their release. In Cataclysm, the face of Azeroth will be forever altered by the return of the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. Players will explore once-familiar areas of the world that have now been reshaped by the devastation and filled with new adventures. In an effort to survive the planet-shattering cataclysm, two new playable races -- worgen and goblins -- will join the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde. As players journey to the new level cap of 85, they'll discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world.

nothing here yet. hopefully invites are still going out today.

haven't seen many people in yet.

They said that they are pushing out invites today and probably for the next few days for the first wave of people that opted-in.

Just a tip for people when you check your inbox for emails, don't get too giddy for seeing a @blizzard.com or @battle.net in the sender. The email can be a spoof email wanting your information to hack your account. Repeat >it can be a spoof mail<.

This link is directly from the Blizzard.com help forums in helping identifying the spoof/phishing mails.

If you've been selected to participate, you'll definitely be notified in one of those two areas.

    Good luck!
    Just to clarify for all.

As far as i know its just like sc2 beta, u just need the requirements theyre looking for (comp specs) and a bnet account doesnt matter if you have 3 active wow accounts or just a wc3 account according to the blizz techs i talked to last night.

Cause i personally quit wow back at ulduar, got into sc2 beta and im gonna come back to WoW in cata hopin they fix issues that bothered me (for the record i wasnt a casual just a worn out hardcore raider lol). And i asked them if i need an active wow account to get into cata beta and he said no but check with his manager and they said i was good to go, so dont worry.

I get about 2-3 scam e-mails per day, and usually one of them is telling me about the Cataclysm beta. Now I'll have to scrutinize my e-mails even further...

Hope the ones I got today and yesterday weren't real. -_-

There's never been an "open beta" for any of the WoW expansions. They've all been closed, meaning that you have to opt in and BLizzard will randomly select players to participate in the closed beta. This closed beta test is it; there won't be an open one. Although, there likely will be additional waves of beta invites, meaning that Blizzard might starting inviting a new round of players every few months or so.
