Real Names on Official Forums - Cancelled

Hello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as conversation threading, the ability to rate posts up or down, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.

I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.

In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters, ( http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/mission.html ) and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.

Is it necessary to block the forums to people who value their privacy? For what? Trolls who can just be ignored, I'd much rather live with a forum full of spammers and trolls than having to expose my real name. Also most arguments here revolve around saying that the only risk was someone coming to your house and killing you.

People bitch on a truly EPIC scale. They bitch like nobody has ever bitched before! No bitching has ever come remotely close to the level of this bitch-fest (and when referring to the blizzard community that's saying something).

...Blizzard sees that a LOT of people don't like A, and that A raises some serious, valid moral and ethical questions.

    ...Blizzard cancels A.

...Blizzard doesn't have a backbone because of it???

Wow. I guess they just can't win and/or do anything right can they? Maybe they should hire you and your genius?

And I also said that for some issues the tech forum is the ONLY option to get help. E-mailing won't help because they can't help you with anything other than generic stuff and the same goes for the phone support.

Also, not everyone has same problems, people wont get ANYTHING from reading hundred times over "delete wtf, wdb, interface folders." People can have specific technical issues regarding new drivers for specific GPU/windows/whatever and the answer doesnt have to be there by default.

And no, there may not be other options, some geek fan forums arent solution either, not even them have all the answers. What if I cant log in? The only other option is to just chill and let my subscription expire with weeks/months already paid for and until the problem fixes itself?
Yet you can get the same support on the phone if you wait long enough.

I'm not saying the phone or email is better, but it's an option that's out there. So you don't have to use the forums regardless of whatever scenario that could occur.

My argument isn't for the system though, my argument is just to everyone claiming that the forums are necessary for their use, when they're not at all. They may be a better option over some, but they are still unnecessary.

Well for my part I could really careless that some1 knows my real name. So all those little fat kids in their chair at home wills till continue to post stupid stuffs on the forums and claiming their ego with their stupid post and qq'ing, I mean if you can't take that someone else beat your ass in a duel Learn2P. If you can't accept that some1 is better than some1 else, well Learn2P. It's a god damn game. why don't you go blame your nintendo like before so your ego will get a bruise? For my part I tough it was a great idea so yeah I'm just disappointed that blizzard had to back tack because of stupid qq'ers and whining peoples. /cry noooooo I don't wanna be track. btw the whole world knows more about you than you do about yourself anyways so deal with it.

Standing your ground is not an admirable trait if what you're upholding is rubbish.

    Cheers on this change.

it caused a lot of bad publicity too close to cataclysm release not to mention lawsuit threats. they'll probably adapt their realID concept to some legal loophole and implement it after everyone buys cataclysm.

They actually thank people for giving negative feedback to them.
This is why Blizzard > all other gaming companies, PC or not.

What I'm saying is that there no reason to block the forums for some people.
