Patch 4.1 Preview -- Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms

In patch 4.1 we'll be introducing Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms, a new system intended to lower queue times. Call to Arms will automatically detect which class role is currently the least represented in the queue, and offer them additional rewards for entering the Dungeon Finder queue and completing a random level-85 Heroic dungeon.

Any time the Dungeon Finder queue is longer than a few minutes for level-85 Heroics, the Call to Arms system kicks in and determines which role is the least represented. In the case of tanking being the least represented role, the "Call to Arms: Tanks" icon will display in the Dungeon Finder UI menu where class roles are selected, and will also display on the UI when the queue pops and you are selected to enter a dungeon. Regardless of your role, you'll always be able to see which role currently has been Called to Arms, if any.

Call to Arms is meant to lower wait times by offering additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss. Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you'll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/elixir (determined by spec), a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount. The pets offered come from a wide variety of sources, and include companions like the Razzashi Hatchling, Cockatiel, and Tiny Sporebat, but the mounts are those specifically only available through dungeons (not raids), like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister's Terrace, and Deathcharger's Reins from Stratholme.

This system is meant to address the unacceptable queue times currently being experienced by those that queue for the DPS role at max level. The long queue times are, of course, caused by a very simple lack of representation in the Dungeon Finder by tanks, and to some extent healers. We don't feel the tanking and healing roles have any inherent issues that are causing the representation disparity, except that fulfilling them carries more responsibility. Understandably, players prefer to take on that responsibility in more organized situations than what the Dungeon Finder offers, but perhaps we can bribe them a little. While this system gives tanks and healers something extra, the incentive is being provided so that we can help players in the DPS role get into more dungeons, get better gear, and continue progressing.

While the gold, gems, flasks, and elixirs are OK incentives, we knew we needed something more substantial. We had briefly considered Valor Points and epics, but decided that wouldn't be working toward the goal of helping DPS players progress, and ultimately wouldn't keep tanks and healers in the Dungeon Finder system for very long. We settled on pets and dungeon-found mounts as they’re cosmetic/achievement items that players tend to try to get on their own, so why not change that up and offer them a chance to get some of those elusive pets and mounts in a way that also helps other players? Even if they don't get a pet or mount, or get one they already have, the gold and other goodies still feel rewarding enough that it won't feel like a waste of effort.

We think it's a pretty solid incentive to get tanks and healers queuing, give max-level players another way to collect the pets and mounts they so desire, and above all, to improve wait times for DPS players sitting in queues. In the case of lower level dungeons, it's actually not uncommon for DPS to be the least represented role, and so if this new system works out and we're pleased with the results, we may consider applying this same mechanic to lower level dungeons as well.

More Tanks/Healers in queue = Faster queue times for DPS.

I'm not sure I understand why there's so much whine about the queue anyway. Now it's done for you. Used to be, you had to make your own group and this could easily take up to 2 hours if not more, especially in lower levels.

And now there's a solution I personally find stupid, and people still are unhappy. If you want the bag of items, reroll tank, that's the whole point of this solution. Blizzard can't conjure tanks, you'll have to do it.

I do have 2 tanks but I honestly doubt this will bribe me in queuing more often. I would, however, maybe, if people would grow some civility in random pugs.

Edit: Also, my main is a dps, so yes I'm aware of the queues. But then I have very nice guildies.

After this we will see a lot more tanks who don't know how to tank... Yay.

    Stop complaining.

As a dps you can go solo the instances where the mounts drop and it will be faster and less tedious than having to deal with clueless people on level85 heroics, I rather have faster queues to gear up my alts than some stupid mount that I can still get by farming them.

Then you accept waiting longer in the queue. I find the pro's weigh up to the cons, you don't, fine, it's gonna get implemented anyway

    i don't approve of this.
Getting more stuff just because you're a tank is really unfair.

And I don't like rare mounts given away for no effort at all. At least now only the people who farm them actually have them. Making farmable rare mounts common is just making the game more unattractive than it has already become (at least for me)

Incorrect. It's that there aren't enough people who want to tank. Just walk around your city. You'll see loads of all the tanking classes. However they're fulfilling more popular roles for their classes. Doesn't matter what class you offer people to tank with, tanking is a role with a huge amount of responsibility and people don't like playing it out in a random heroic.

Honestly, I don't know why this is so conflicting. The issue should be incredibly obvious and Blizzard has seen it and have created a solution.

It's a lazy solution and a simple bandage to a simple problem: It's not that there aren't enough tanks, it's that there aren't enough classes that CAN tank. Like the aesthetics of being a Shaman, but want to tank? Too bad. "Hybridizing" all the pure classes, though it would admittedly be a bitch to balance, would help to solve this problem a lot.
Sry, but you are absolutely wrong on this one.

We already have 4 classes able to tank, but even within those there are plenty of players, who deny playing tank, simply because of 2 reasons.

    1. Taking the responsibility to lead the group through the dungeon and keep the monsters at bay.

    2. The loss of E-Penis

You can make all classes capable of tanking and you'll still won't find enough players to do it. So all the DPS Players complaining about this should first think about why they
    aren't tanking themselves.

Bit of money (e.g. i can go and solo Maggy in 10 minutes = 6x more money than one hc) or one flask or even stupid pet/mount is no incentive for me to queue in LFG and deal with bunch of... [put your own word here].
There are more people than the ones like you in this game. There are also people who don't play a tanking role now, but might switch to tanking because of this chance. That delivers more tanks, which is the intention. We don't know if it will reduce que times with 20, 15, 10 or maybe only a couple of minutes. The point is, this will likely shorten queue times + all complainers haven't really posted any alternative to long queue times.

Ye and it will be the "hybrid tax" shit all over just the other way around this time where hybrids can get rewards where pure's cant, good going

as a tank myself i'm a bit bothered about the mounts, pets are a good reward, but mounts shouldn't be too easy to obtain, i've had over 150 kills on the raven lord and still haven't got him, i don't want it from a bag, and if i would get it i'd probably just delete it as it doesn't give me the satisfaction i wanted.
However! (Big However) this will make the queues a lot shorter, and with many people thinking about making an 'offspec' for tanking will at some point stop the reward system for the bag.
And tanks that want the mounts or pets but just cba to do heroics (as they got all the gear they wanted) will return to tanking heroic, which would shorten the queue's even more...

I don't get why dps is so concerned about tanks getting something nice, for doing the job you don't want to do... DPS is faceroll, tanks and healers actually have to pay attention. there i said it.

Good idea. If the DPS don't like the fact that tanks get more, they can tank.
