Patch 4.1 Preview -- Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms

In patch 4.1 we'll be introducing Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms, a new system intended to lower queue times. Call to Arms will automatically detect which class role is currently the least represented in the queue, and offer them additional rewards for entering the Dungeon Finder queue and completing a random level-85 Heroic dungeon.

Any time the Dungeon Finder queue is longer than a few minutes for level-85 Heroics, the Call to Arms system kicks in and determines which role is the least represented. In the case of tanking being the least represented role, the "Call to Arms: Tanks" icon will display in the Dungeon Finder UI menu where class roles are selected, and will also display on the UI when the queue pops and you are selected to enter a dungeon. Regardless of your role, you'll always be able to see which role currently has been Called to Arms, if any.

Call to Arms is meant to lower wait times by offering additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss. Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you'll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/elixir (determined by spec), a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount. The pets offered come from a wide variety of sources, and include companions like the Razzashi Hatchling, Cockatiel, and Tiny Sporebat, but the mounts are those specifically only available through dungeons (not raids), like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister's Terrace, and Deathcharger's Reins from Stratholme.

This system is meant to address the unacceptable queue times currently being experienced by those that queue for the DPS role at max level. The long queue times are, of course, caused by a very simple lack of representation in the Dungeon Finder by tanks, and to some extent healers. We don't feel the tanking and healing roles have any inherent issues that are causing the representation disparity, except that fulfilling them carries more responsibility. Understandably, players prefer to take on that responsibility in more organized situations than what the Dungeon Finder offers, but perhaps we can bribe them a little. While this system gives tanks and healers something extra, the incentive is being provided so that we can help players in the DPS role get into more dungeons, get better gear, and continue progressing.

While the gold, gems, flasks, and elixirs are OK incentives, we knew we needed something more substantial. We had briefly considered Valor Points and epics, but decided that wouldn't be working toward the goal of helping DPS players progress, and ultimately wouldn't keep tanks and healers in the Dungeon Finder system for very long. We settled on pets and dungeon-found mounts as they’re cosmetic/achievement items that players tend to try to get on their own, so why not change that up and offer them a chance to get some of those elusive pets and mounts in a way that also helps other players? Even if they don't get a pet or mount, or get one they already have, the gold and other goodies still feel rewarding enough that it won't feel like a waste of effort.

We think it's a pretty solid incentive to get tanks and healers queuing, give max-level players another way to collect the pets and mounts they so desire, and above all, to improve wait times for DPS players sitting in queues. In the case of lower level dungeons, it's actually not uncommon for DPS to be the least represented role, and so if this new system works out and we're pleased with the results, we may consider applying this same mechanic to lower level dungeons as well.

Yeah cause spamming trade chat for 30 minutes is so much better. Atleast you can do something while you wait in que

The goodie bag is fine, I mean it's always nice to have incentive to use a new ystem implimented by blizz, but i don't think the bag should have a chance of containing a non-combat pet or a mount. Some people farm for months to the better part of a year for those mounts. for a collector of pets and mounts alike, this is a slap in the face. Actually suprised they didn't add fiery warhorse to the list -_-

It won't happen. Years before it was hard for newbe to get to heroic. Now every looser has a chance to be placed with good party and just slack at 8-10k dps without controlling anything just trying to stay alive and not be kicked.

If we are both wanting to go to Austraila it's not fair.
Except in this analogy the pilot would be sick. And while the dps would say i sit here in my compfy chair and wait for someone else to fly the plane the tank would say, ok there is need of a pilot, well before we wait here for him to get better, i will fly us there.

Still, bad analogies are just that, bad.

I think it's a terrible thought. As stated above the tanks were already the ones who could easily solo places much earlier than others , so they already get their hands on mounts easier. Together with healers, they have no wait time what so ever for queueing and now even get a bonus. The only good thing is that they need to stay till the end, so you might loose those hc mount hoppers who join hc and abandon the party after the mount dropping boss has been killed having the dpsers waited half an hour for nothing. Maybe you should actually give penalty's instead if you went in as tank or healer and abandon a full group you lose your week of valor points, that would help at least on letting them stay in the group.

I mean this thought will lead to 2 terrible things >>>

1 Dpsérs will go on their terrible offspec tanking or healing, or just make an offspec just for this, so they get a shot on their goodies/mount/pet leading to wipes and depressed puggers

2 Healers and tanks will not want to join up a group with fellow guildy's, since if they go for random they get chance on goodies/mount/pet creating an antisocial environment

Also as stated above from a warlock. If rogues had a tank spec we would do it as well, just as shamans would with their shield. I love rogue tanking, but it's never really used, and we don't have taunt button sadly, or crit immunity. The whole point of not many tanks / healers is that every class can dps, but not many classes can heal or tank. And an extra fact is that raids don't need many tanks as well, so there are just not that many to begin with.

LOL! one mistake as dps in a raid and you are dead? what game are you playing? If you fuck up, you do 2k dps less. Can that wipe a raid, sure. if the berserk timer is tight already. If you fuck up, you stand in the crap a bit too long and the healers will have to waste mana on your life. And even if you die, the raid can still make it. Yes, some fights need interrupters and crowd control and a good dps can mean the difference between making a boss or not but a bad tank will make you wipe every time. Bad healers will make you wipe every time. Bad DPS are just annoying.

I don't think healers or tanks are better players, or they are smarter. The do invest more in helping others. I do this because I like to help and love to tank. I don't pug at the moment and will probably only do it if I get a reward. Then again, at least I do, any pure DPS doesn't and will never help solve something only they experience.

The amount of QQ from dps saying blizzard is practically taking a poop on them is unreal, accept the fact that your role takes a mili second to replace .. you are everywhere, intellect geared dk's, cloth geared warriors - you name it you are out there somewhere.
They are forced to offer healers and tanks (let's face it, the class that takes most focus/responsibility/skill? (in a dungeon environment im talking)) rewards to even consider queue'ing with the likes of most people (dps) in this game.
On my realm in particular tanks and healers are not actually that hard to come by, there's plenty out there and damn good ones at that - but they wouldn't even dream of running with PuG's. Why ..? I wonder.
(P.S. The rewards mean nothing to me, nothing. I'd enter a heroic on any character for gear. Gems? 5g+ Flasks? 60g? Takes a few minutes to get that much gold.)

Simple as that. If you follow the marks and CC what I ask, we will not wipe. If a DPS fucks up, most of the time I will compensate.

3k hunter, no problem. ignore and just use berserk more to compensate.
DPS breaking cc, no problem, just taunt and work a bit harder.
Afk mage, don't care, kicking takes as much time as just ignoring.

DPS don't wipe a run if they have half a braincell.
and grinding doesn't make you a good player.

If you think you can come up with a better idea to motivate slackers to help the WoW community with a problem only DPS experience, apply for a job at blizzard. If you really want to help solve the problem, reroll a tank and healer and be a example for your mates. If you want to stay a pure DPS, accept you play a role the majority is playing and enjoy the shorter queue times this will cause. but whining and QQ-ing about pure dps not being able to get the reward is just stupid and makes me wonder if ever DPS isn't to much of a challenge for you.
And in how many cases will the tank say: sorry I fucked up and wiped you?
I have experienced it happening a lot of times and the only thing the tank did was blaming the others.
I think I may have been very unlucky in pug-tanks I guess, but still...

PS your saying again that DPS is for retards and only tanking takes skill and brains... I still disagree.

No I said any dps that wipes a party is a retard.
Same with a tank that pulls before the healer is ready or a healer that goes afk before a bossfight without saying anything.

Some of the best/smartest/focussed players I know play only pure DPS. my raidleader is a mage and knows every encounter in the game and all tactics. class doesn't dictate skill, skill does affect class.

I don't like this at all. Many players have been farming for ages to get these mounts and now (ask tanks are always needed) they are just handed out for free? Yeah, DPS roles may get a shorter queue, but the tanks will always get the reward. The chance to get one is low, but still..

If you crave any of the three mounts, go farm them like everyone else.
  1. F-Minus's Avatar
They are not handed out for free, but they are a reward for people answering the Call to Arms.
  1. Glitchbeat's Avatar
I know that, but again, they should not be rewarded this way at all.

"and a very rare chance at receiving a mount" <= !!!! VERY RARE !!!!!

Do you really think that it will be more than 2% (actual droprate fo these mount according to Armory)

No, it's just a carrot on a stick... nothing else.

Offering more gold or flask is unfair, the thing with the mount is ridiculous, but it will work for sure !

Lol, yes! one mistake and you die because of all the shit on the floor. A tank can sometimes survive it just long enough to get healed.
DPS do not have that luxury of having a designated healer.
In current cata raids, the requirements are tight enough that if that DPS dies, you won't make the kill often enough.

You want to help out others, but 'only' if you get that bag... how altruistic.
I'm not saying you are selfish because I don't know you, but i hope you can understand why people get upset by this whole situation.

For the rest I do agree with you. We can reroll if it is needed, but does that solve the problem you think?

Agreed, along with totally under geared people trying to queue and fulfill roles they have no experience with simply due to the rewards dangled in front of them. I foresee massive amounts of complaining from thousands of players who are matched with inadequate tanks and healers, in unforgiving cataclysm dungeons. Yes this will totally work well, at pissing off the player base that is. So many groups will dissolve before the final boss is even reached, like Halls of Reflection. Players who get giddy about this change and jump in as a tank or healer will probably not last long in those roles and end up crying in a corner after being verbally assaulted and berated. So while the numbers of tanks and heals will increase for a short while, it will decrease again due to the very nature of players using the RDF(actually most WoW players).

This. As a full Epic tank who gets all his Valor Points off raiding 2 nights a week, I see no reason to ever do a random HC - giving us a chance to get this bag is definately going to make me get back into the 'groove' of making Dps and healers qeue faster.
