Raid Finder Loot Rules Update
Short version: When using Raid Finder for the Dragon Soul raid instance, players whose currently assigned class role (Tank, Healer, or Damage) matches the class role that a piece of armor or a weapon is flagged for will receive +100 to their Need roll.

When using Raid Finder for the Dragon Soul raid instance, players whose currently assigned class role (Tank, Healer, or Damage) matches the class role that a piece of armor or a weapon is flagged for will receive +100 to their Need roll. For purposes of this check, your currently assigned role is defined as the class role you have assigned when a boss is defeated. Sound confusing? I hope not, but here's how it'll work:

A boss dies and drops EPIC TANKING ITEM.

  • A mage in the group yawns and clicks the "Greed" button, getting a 98.

  • A Fury warrior in the group wants to take up tanking, so he rolls "Need" and gets a solid 64.

  • Both tanks want the item. Tank 1 rolls a 12, and Tank 2 rolls a 7.

So what happens?

Because the mage rolled greed, she's right out from the start. The Fury warrior's Need roll was higher than the tanks', but he was in the Damage Dealer role when the boss died, and the item is flagged for tanking, so his 64 is still just a 64 out of a possible 100. In contrast, Tank 1 and Tank 2 each get a 100 point bonus to their rolls because they were in the Tanking role when the boss died and they’re rolling on an item that has been flagged for the tanking role. That means that Tank 1 rolled a 112 out of 200, and tank 2 rolled a 107 out of 200. Tank 1 wins the item! If a roll got a bonus, that bonus will be clearly displayed in the chat log.

Please keep in mind that, at least for now, this system will only look at class role, and not player spec. This bonus isn't only for tanking items either – it applies to Tanking, Damage Dealing, and Healing items, and some items are flagged for more than one class role too. Starting out, only Dragon Soul raid items will be flagged for class roles in this way (though all of the items in the raid will be flagged for one or more roles). As you might expect, all the normal Need Before Greed rules are still in place, so that means that these roll bonuses won't overrule normal class and usability restrictions. Item tooltips in the raid won't reflect which class roles will get rolling bonuses, but it should be fairly obvious based on stat allocations and item type.

We are considering expanding this system to apply to the new 4.3 dungeons as well, though it is unlikely that we'll see the system apply to older dungeons or raids for now. Also, please keep in mind that this system is newly minted, and it may see further changes before it's released with the Raid Finder in patch 4.3.

Wonder how it will work for Shadow Priests, Elemental shamans and boomkins, some times spirit gear (which is usually healer gear) is BIS because of the spirit to hit conversion.
i swear do people not read. if could be both a healing and a dps item, then obviously both of them will be able to roll on it... spirit mace drops... ele shammy and holy pali get the 100+ need bonusenh shammy and prot pali who decides he wants it for OS doesnt get the 100 bonus------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------example 2expertise/mastery 1 hand str axe drops, both tanks and melee dps can roll on it with the bonus. ranged, casters, and healers dont get the bonus. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------example 3any 2 hand str weapon, blood dks and melee[ uh dk, ret pali, arms/fury war, get to roll on with bonus.

Incoming ppl whining about rolling for offspec... I like this idea. I can see where it can cause some issues tho.

    Tough.

You can start out like everyone else in that case and work your way up with gear as you tank, thus earning your gear not expecting to get it by performing another role.

And the other way around too. As a Teluric Currents shaman, sometimes I avoid as much spirit as I can, making some gear without spirit and 2 other secondary stats BiS for me.

This is a great change. Its way overdue, but better late than never.

shard of woe comes to mind. our hpally and disc priest would love to have it, but so would our arcane mage. lack of spirit gear in firelands made our caster dps have to share traditionally dps only items with priest heals due to the lack of said gear. hopefully blizzard doesn't screw the pooch with this whole thing.

I imagine Blizzard will work out a solution where blood death knights can roll need+100 on two-handed strength weapons where a protection pally/warrior can't. Same with a feral druid not being able to roll need+100 on spirit/leather, even though another dps druid (boomkin) can.

Feral tanks should have to roll against someone anyway. All the plate tanks roll against each other. It would be broken if ferals didn't have to roll against anyone.

I think they should mark 2h weapons as both tank and dps. Otherwise Blood DKs would never get a new weapon out of RRF. Caster DPS and Healers roll on the same weapons too, so it would be fair imo.

So as a boomkin I'd be able to roll on leather agi loot (since its not spec-based only role-based), which would have to include feral dps/tanking and rogue pieces (with the possible exception being leather with dodge as that would likely be flagged as a tank item), AND leather healing items. So cept for trinkets and a few odd pieces here and there, I can still roll need on everything and get the +100 bonus. Sweet.

I think Blizz will pay some attention while classifying items. The mace in your first example would be flagged as both DPS and healing stuff, so both the healer and the spriest/ele shammy will get the bonus. Easy!

its like dungeon finder...you're roll is set for what you que as. You can't just change it.

They would probably only flag certain dps rolls as eligible for the loot, meaning a mage wouldn't be able to roll ms for it but a boomy might.

If its flagged for more than one role (Which they stated there going to do) then yes it is possible. Doesn't have to be all dps, it can be a specific class that's flagged. They already flag specific classes/specs in the normal LFD so why wouldn't that work here?

Okay, in software engineering, we call this a HACK. Somebody forgot the intended use of "GREED" and "NEED" so they decided to patch it. Instead of allowing the FURY warrior to need an item that is not for their spec, they should simply disable the need button for them. A mage on the other hand should NOT be allowed to greed on items they can't use. This need-greed stuff is BS anyway, make it clear - offspec roll, main-spec roll, vendor/de roll.

Yeah, lots of people don't get the idea... Not all classes have the role ninja. This system is not aimed to give everyone one SURE NEED ROLL, it's pointed to avoid people to get gear that will be left getting dust in the backpack, until the person decides to try the offspec.
The whole point is to have people using the item drop immediately, so of course there are some items external to this system, as the bear tanks.

I approved this. I Have still a bitter taste in my mount since a Tank ((read here a warrior)) rolled my Dps two hand weapon for his offspec fury warrior in Zulgurub. Finally Blizz done something wise here. I expect many ninja QQ very soon.

Really good of Blizz to do this.

The one drawback I'll call out now (because I'm sure it's gonna happen) is tanks complaining because they have no chance of winning that +450 mastery trinket with a 2k Strength on-use because it will only be flagged for dps. I know tanks who stack mastery now often do this already.

Alright if I understand this correctly...Spirit on any non-plate - healer/damage (classes that can't use spirit can't roll need.)Spirit on plate - healerDodge/Shield block - tankStr/Agi - tank/damageInt - healer/damageHit - damage/tankTrinkets - Individually set based on special effectTier pieces - allThis mean that an Enh shaman/cat druid can roll on gear with spirit since spirit is a dps stat for a spec they play, even though they aren't that spec. A healer can't roll on agi/str/hit gear. A shadow priest can roll on both gear with spirit or hit. Remember there is still a restriction that you can only roll need if you can use all the stats on the item. I didn't list exp since it never appears with int.

Yeah, dps druids and shaman seem to be the biggest potential problems if the system won't monitor spec. Probably the most obvious solution would be to split the dps role into melee dps and ranged dps, which should solve it while still having it only monitor class and role. Who knows if they're planning on doing that though.
