WoW Lost 800k Subscribers, down to 10.3M
Activision Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 800,000 subscribers last quarter, following the loss of 300k subscribers announced last quarter and 600k loss from the quarter before that. This brings us to 1.7 million subscribers lost in the last 3 quarters. Some things they made note of on the call:

  • Most of the subscriptions were lost in China.
  • There is normally an increase in subscriptions around December.
  • The decreased profit came from all of the games in development and no launches occurring.
  • There will be at least two major releases next year.

we all know theyre all waiting for Guild Wars 2, im fairly sure that blizzard has noted arenanet/ncsoft under Threats of their SWOT analysis, henche why the stuff they come up with are already implemented as part of the game in newer MMO's or announced MMO's .
there's nothing wrong with World of Warcraft in itself, but its a bit too obvious Blizzard didnt make any use of their innovation they introduced in 2004 in Vanilla and from there just kept developing, rather than being innovative.

Other MMO's might not go as deep, but i think everyone is just simply tired of this game by the lack of innovation and the overenthusiasm to change and develop the game.

China has a very fascinating mass-bubble economy going on right now. The demographic of persons who play WoW in China are possibly those of a sub-middle class who are being literally sacrificed for the rising GDP of the country, and likely are unable to afford playing an MMO anymore. What I'm saying is that, yes, WoW lost subscribers but they didn't lose them to any other oncomming or pre-existing MMO.

This is why the note was made in the earnings call: wealthy investors already understand the volatile global markets going on, and this is a subtle warning for those who are understanding China's economic climate behind the hype of China becoming THE economic superpower to invest in.
Obviously since this is to the end of Sept. MoP wasn't even announced.

This game is more than 5 years old. Nobody would read such things about a guy that played chess for five years. People would say "Aww, he is bored by the game" and not: "chess needs new rules. NAO!"

This game will die - at this speed in a couple of years, making it ten years old. Or 8 to 9, who knows. Wow, this is a real problem. Not a war, not a financial crisis, not to get hit by a truck on the highway. Phew, better worrying. Now. And invest time in future MMOs.

No it's not. MoP wasn't announced at the end of Q3.

And who are you guys fooling? This is ONLY healthy for a company. I have played WoW for 6 years and I can't remember any content patch in our history that is larger and more cool than 4.3

4.3 is fucking good stuff and Mists of Pandaria looks even better.

Bioware is good but ToR is a mistake. Most gamers dont give a shit about storyline unless it's extremly shallow. If the story is shallow then the roleplayer gamers wont like it. Just like Dragon Age 2 was more popular than DA: O even though DA: O was a madly extremly better game.

    Hope this helps.
Actually, regardless of what the article here says, their profits tripled compared to last year.

If I'm not mistaken China is still in the Wrath Cycle. So lost subscriptions over there may just mean that they are done with it's content.

Only 10 million plus subscribers ... and that's a problem?

New MMO's released now with all the latest technology are lucky to ever hit 2 million.

    Maybe they ment WoW Dota.
No, listen to the webcast, they mean Blizzard full releases, meaning Diablo 3 and another one that they'll have Ready™: Mists of Pandaria or SC2:Heart of the Swarm.

Morhaime is the one saying Cata is hard and that MoP will appeal to casuals again with emphases on PvP conflict for hardcores.

This is not suprising, this is the pre expansion blues. Happens almost every time and all the doomsday end of the world wow Harold Campings come out of the woodwork holding there Picket Signs "OH NOEZ DA ENDZ IS NIEGHZ TOLD U SO!11!" With a game of this magnitude you should expect more volatile changes.

Who do you think you are to choose who can post what? Are you the owner of these forums? If you are not where does this self centered egoism come from?

It is teenagers like you who thinks the world rotates around you that should be banned straight forward. You don't have the right or will ever be able to regulate what people thinks.

Some people and the self value they give themselves is just disgusting.

Before you say "WoW is dying" ever, remember that the very first MMORPG, Ultima Online is still going, and it was released in 1997. WoW is more popular than UO ever was, so I think it will be a looong time before WoW dies.

Not surprising in the least that WoW is bleeding subscriptions, and I'd hate to tell them but MoP is not going to bring players back. It's the epitome of what has caused the veterans to leave in the first place. WoW is old, it's tired engine looks laughable that F2P games look superior to it. Players are tired of the same old grind. There's no real innovation to this game anymore neither, and pokemon isn't helping the cause neither. It's coming to it's end. Rift has took its toll on this game, SWToR will give another bruise, and GW2 will put a major hurting on this. It had a good run though, that's for sure. They need their new "next-gen MMO" to come out, though they let go of one of their top personnel lately, so that certainly doesn't bode well the state the game is turning out to be. Personally, I'm happy blizzard's getting a reality check that they can't just keep walking all over their fanbase. They'll have their Stockholm Syndrome suffering sheeple to stomp on and abuse for fun still, but they're going to continue on losing more people because they sat back and didn't put any real effort into WoW since TBC. MoP doesn't look any better.

Man, can you imagine having to tell your investors and especially Bobby Kotick that you just lost 1.7million players in less than a year? I'm sure they're finally into full-fledged panic mode now.

To all the doomsayers saying wow is dying.

Please name 1, just 1 other game that still has 10.3 million active players after it has been out for 7 years....

I think the only game that would even get close to that is the sims, sad as it is

    ---------- Post added 2011-11-09 at 10:19 AM ----------

Just as a comparison to how well wow is still doing:

    http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

The top game for concurrent users on steam at the moment is COD3 with a peak of 66000 concurrent users playing at the same time. This is a game that is not even very old...
