WoW Lost 800k Subscribers, down to 10.3M
Activision Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 800,000 subscribers last quarter, following the loss of 300k subscribers announced last quarter and 600k loss from the quarter before that. This brings us to 1.7 million subscribers lost in the last 3 quarters. Some things they made note of on the call:

  • Most of the subscriptions were lost in China.
  • There is normally an increase in subscriptions around December.
  • The decreased profit came from all of the games in development and no launches occurring.
  • There will be at least two major releases next year.

Please stop with this: "All those people that left are "veterans" and "good" players, fed up with the easy mode" when in reality all sorts of people left. Veterans, newbies, bad and good players have left. Cata has a lot more to offer in terms of difficulty than Wrath did and yet still people leave, the game is old and Blizzard didnt really change anything this expansion, archeology is a freaking joke, tol barad was a total mess, dailies grinding over and over and over......... And no the LFG system didnt kill WoW either, nobody knows how the game would look if it wasnt implemented (me neither). Stop claiming that x y z is responsible when in reality you guys dont know jack ****..................yes...........flying mounts also cost 1,7 players to quit now stop whining!

I'm pretty sure that this is exactly the right answer.

I'm not trying to be a doomsayer... But I have a feeling that WoW's lifespan is starting to reach its end. Perhaps not during Cata or even MoP, but definitely in the nearby future.

Though I'm quite glad to actually see a Resto Shaman buff for once. It's been a while.

I am not saying WOW is dying... god knows no fanboy wants to hear that... but WOW is dying... you could and did make excuse after excuse for the 900k over the last 9 months... god knows I have read every excuse in the book... add to it another 800k for the past 3 months and your still gonna make excuses?

Get real and face facts... there is no other game out that could be used as an excuse for WOW's failure over the last year... So 1.7 million over the last calendar year with no real comp... Aion and Rift are both a joke IMO... Star wars coming out will take another mill... diablo will take another mill... your looking at 2 mill+ over the next year just because WoW sucks cock... Deal with the reality fanboys... numbers dont lie even if you try and make it because China doesn't like Cata... pfftt... w/e we all know and see the truth... My server went from 17 progression raid guilds on 25 man to 1... there were 11 progression raid guilds on 10... there is 2 now.... Facts are facts bitches... deal with the death knell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I find it funny that you mention SWTOR; and all the other people that is talking about SWTOR taking over for WoW. Didn't you guys say exactly the same about Age of Conan? And that Age of Conan was going to take completly over for WoW? And as far as i can see, it's partly free-to-play now.
Not saying that SWTOR is a bad game, but WoW is a game for casuals (face it, only 500k players in WoW is hardcore PvP or hardocre PvE..). Yes, WoW will lose subscribers to SWTOR, but no way it's going to lose over 1 mil.

What blizzard has done with WoW is genious, with the grapichs WOW have (making it easy to run on laptops or a normal desktop pc), the VERY easy UI and so on. It attracts players, and especially casual players (like me). You don't want to play a game that you don't understand, right? Therfor Blizzard is brilliant. (but i'm sure you guys already know this).

And all i can say about hardcore/elitist quiting WoW, /care. "I played WoW before TBC came out, and i miss the old times when we needed 40 players to down one boss; it was so fun, and i'm basing my arguments on pure nostalgia." grow the fuck up hipster players.

Eh. People eventually grow tired of games. I quick WOW a few months back and recently took advantage of a 14 day pass emailed to me. Left 3 days early. Playing nonstop for 6 years just made it too boring, repetitive, and predictable. Will I ever go back? Perhaps, I really enjoy Blizzard games - just as I like BioWare games. They are both equally great companies. With SWTOR destroy WOW? No. Will it take subs away? Probably some. It already has over 800k pre-orders through vendors, and another estimated 2-2.5 million pre-orders via digital download and international sources. That probably shows the strength of the brand (SW and BioWare) and the desire to try something new by MMO geeks. Will the numbers go up from there? Probably for a bit, but I would also expect it to fall off some. Just like I expect WOW will probably lose another 1-3 million subs over the next year. People will move on or diversify. Don't quite understand why both can't coexist or why WOW has to die. It could go down to 10 servers and a few hundred thousand subscriptions...and it won't be dead. I am actually looking forward to Blizzard getting serious competition and forcing them to deliver more innovative content faster.

You don't have to say it's dying. I don't believe that WoW will die soon. They still have enough manpower in turm of subscribers to keep the boat floating for a while. They can even afford to stay exclisively paid, while many other MMOs go F2P. You know what? F2P with a shop option for extras (can be only cosmetical extras, by the way!) are usually making more profit than subscriptions only. God knows how many money is wasted on simple browser games!

WoW brings no innovation, that's the point. All they have a rip-offs from other games. Scenarios, pet battles etc. They are well-implemented, but not original, and the only thing which would distinguish WoW from the rest is gone - the story, the world. One "remake" in Cata is not enough to bring back "classic" areas to life. People rush towards the endgame and are stuck there, and the endgame is boring as hell. Grind dailys, grind the same heroics over and over, grind raids. Wait for the raids to be nerved down into oblivion if you cannot find a group due to your RL obligations.

I don't need a second job! I don't need a game which imposes a daily or weekly schedule on me. I want to be able to pass a week, to come back and proceed, but I cannot. Every day spend off the game puts me farther behind, so I finally cannot keep up. Wrath in its 2nd part was great, because I could spend a weekend to gear up my character and then proceed to explore the latest raid in a role I would like to play. Now, I am stuck at a point where it becomes disgusting to log in, because I would never be able to complete anything, even though I have a nice guild.

So... Next WOW expansion is not guarantied to even be out next year.... Fantastic news. Will defenetly increase the sub numbers even more.....

Most of the subscriptions were lost in China.
They did not tell the percentage, meaning this can vary from 20% of 800k, to 90% of 800k
There is normally an increase in subscriptions around December.
Yup XMAS is comming (cata was launched before XMAS, 7-8th of December if I remember correctly)
There will be at least two major releases next year.
Activision Blizzard is not entirely Blizzard. Look at that: Diablo3 = 2012, Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm = 2012, WoW: MoP = 2012, maybe some other games as well

What a Game that is 7 years old lost 10 % of its Subscribers? Yup definately blizz's fault and not the fact that people get bored of the game

Just as a comparison to how well wow is still doing:

The top game for concurrent users on steam at the moment is COD3 with a peak of 66000 concurrent users playing at the same time. This is a game that is not even very old...
lol, some shit you got there. AS there is 10.3 online at the same time? lol

Actually name one MMORPG that is of the type that WOW is that even has a million. LOTRO failed so hard they had to go F2P just to keep the lights on. EQ has its diehards as does EQ2 but both suffered horribly from the Sony breaches in security.

Currently there just is no alternative for WOW, at least at the quality level. Granted quality does not always equate to fun.

Its not me saying that ther are two releases next year. Its Blizzard and the releases have already been annouched. Starcraft expansion and D3. And thats EXACTLY why they will drag the next WOW expansion as much as possible.

Did ppl really think that a 1 year pass was beeing offered because next expansion was coming in next 6 months? No... it had free Diablo 3 copy simply because BLizzard has the goal to promote one game at the time and let other of their games hang. Thats exactly what they will do with WOW for 2012.

    Some people : )

Instead of focusing on how old the game is, try to think of the timespan in which these 1.700.000 players left. That's a bit more relevant wouldn't you think?

800k lost of subscribers from Asia = Chinese gold farmers not making any profit anymore because not a lot of people are that crazy about gold, since it's too easy to make gold nowadays.

So yeah folks, just chill. Just chinese farmers closing business

On a serious note, I would love to see how they are coming up with all these numbers.
