WoW Lost 800k Subscribers, down to 10.3M
Activision Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 800,000 subscribers last quarter, following the loss of 300k subscribers announced last quarter and 600k loss from the quarter before that. This brings us to 1.7 million subscribers lost in the last 3 quarters. Some things they made note of on the call:

  • Most of the subscriptions were lost in China.
  • There is normally an increase in subscriptions around December.
  • The decreased profit came from all of the games in development and no launches occurring.
  • There will be at least two major releases next year.

Question: if I physically cancel my subscription on battle.net in October, but I still had prepaid through January (6-month subscription, for example) I can still play until then if I wanted to, would my subscription loss register in Q4 2011 or Q1 2012?

You really think Blizzard would rather take legal action for deliberately lying in an investor report? If you do, I suggest you spend less time trolling the forums and more time learning how the real world works.

The latter, as you're still subscribed to the service until January end, but not subscribed by the end of Q1.

'Bout time they increased the rez ranges. Still not enough though (should be 100+ yds, srsly... no one wants to aggro the boss trying to help their friends recover from a wipe). Now how about doing something about the ri-donk-ulous mana costs...

    inb4 WoW is dead...

Honestly, it doesn't surprise me. You got your life circumstances, other competitive games and the sheer lack of fun that someone might face. Does WoW need to improve based off that? Well, it's honestly an individuals choice of direction

I wonder why no one considers the stinkiness of the economy as maybe a reason Blizzard has lost some of these subscribers... after all, WoW is a luxury. As for the future of WoW, I'm not worried. Yes, it's soemthign to be concerned about, but nothign to panic over.

It's been a tough year for all games since so many great ones have come out and a few more still to go. MW3, BF3, GoW3, Skyrim, fifa 12, batman, swtor etc. etc. Once 4.3 comes back some players will return but by the time MoP comes out everyone will have played the console games to death except for maybe Skyrim and people will come back. I think next year will be a huge year for Blizz.

only two major releases next year, that means diablo 3 and mists of pandaria for sure, so no Hearth of the Swarm any time soon I supose :S? bummer

Well, I'm not surprised, I'm sad, the game isn't what was before, the "RPG system" practically gone and when you see the WoW today you hardly remember the feeling when you was playing Warcraft II and III, in some point the game lost his focus.

Though I want Blizzard to survive, 'cause Diablo looks awesome... at least until they release the xpac for it in a couple years adding a new panda/kitten/other bullshit childish animal class that doesn't kill demons (because killing is wrong), but turns them into stuffed animals, and instead of looting gold (GREED IS WRONG) all recently teddy-bearified demons will drop candy as the new currency.
says the "twilightthemedhumanizedcatpartoftheworsthumanfactionofthewholealliance" aka worgen, seriously how can ppl be so close minded about pandarens?

This isn't just something to shake off, a loss of 1.7 million subs. is huge it's almost 10% of their player base, and it's mainly because of the slow content releases. Which is because they are focusing on other games like CoD etc.

Like the 800k subscriber loss is really going to affect them at all. Most MMO's prior to WoW were considered popular with only 100k subs.

Is it weird that I'm considering coming back now since I've missed everything before ZG/ZA onwards and feel like the extra daily content plus LFR plus five more heroics plus LFR/Dragon Soul might actually give me stuff to do?

    Actually, it's over 14%.

The game saw a pretty good increase of Subs when Cata was launched, it makes some sense to lose these subs again after the "hype" calmed down. Of course, with a few extras to tag along with that simply because of Cata not being the best expansion to date.

Have you ever been to China? Do you know anyone in China? Ever talked to someone? Read a paper? Know anything at all about China except silly WoW forum myths about "pandas are holy in China lol"?

Given Chinese nationalist sentiments I am pretty sure the fact that making a respectful homage to all things Chinese, as MoP by all indications is, will be fairly appreciated among Chinese players.

Why would bots be on Chinese servers when the gold buyers are on European/US servers?

Chinese servers most likely have way less bots/farmers than US/EU.
