WoW Stable at 10.2 Million Subscribers
Activision Blizzard's press release states that World of Warcraft is still at 10.2 million subscribers as of 3/31/12. This is the same amount of subscribers from Q4 2011. A few other interesting points:

  • Battle.Net has 10 million users.
  • 1.2 million people bought the Annual Pass.
  • 2 million people played the Diablo 3 open beta.
  • Pre-orders for Diablo 3 have set a new record for Blizzard. This number includes units pre-ordered as part of the Annual Pass promotion, as well as retail and digital pre-orders.
  • Blizzard renewed their license with NetEase for the distribution of World of Warcraft in mainland China, and it will continue for an additional three years following the expiration of the current license agreement.

It's sad how many people blindly swallow Blizz' propaganda and refuse to realize the truth. This game IS dying. In Europe and North America. Just go look at the server list during peak hours. 10.2 million subs my ass. They are all in China. Most MMO activity is happening via the cross-realm tools. We NEED server merges.

What bugs me is why don't they put online a classical WoW realm (or even one for each major expansion) and make everyone happy - no matter what the current casual players say , there are a lot of players who would gladly play the game in a old style way. None of my friends play WoW anymore, but when we recently chat about this subject everyone of them stated that the only way to come back was to experience the original WoW version once again. Even if the feeling wouldn't be the same ( like several years ago ) ... at least to have the option to do that...
You and your friends would play a vanilla server for like two weeks. Then you will get bored and Blizzard have spent a lot of money in giving you two weeks of entertainment.

No one likes Cataclysm, hopefully in MoP they will return to the Wrath style which they should have never abandoned.

Oh, and dont worry, they will be close to the record of Cataclysm with MoP, and if they do it Wrath style, this time they will actually keep those numbers and not like Crapaclysm.

WoW has ALWAYS, ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS been the CASUAL MMO. Vanilla, TBC, were both more casual friendly than EverQuest or Ultima Online.

The direction of Cata sucks, but the direction made in Wrath was very good, Leave Normal raiding and 5 mans like in Wrath and add to that harder heroic raiding, LFR and let players start heroic raiding without finishing Normal first, and you have the perfect game.

The game is not dying. How is a game that is growing in China but declining elsewhere dieing if they are keeping subs up. If the are losing subs at the same rate they are gaining them then its stable not dying. A dying MMO would be an MMO that had a ton of servers but due to population decreases has to server merge because of all the wasted server costs.

WoW isnt dieing your just bored of playing it but it seems 10 million people disagree with you and even more than that are just waiting for the next expansion and they will come back and subs will go back up. Players unsub to games all the time doesnt mean that the game is dying it means the players have other things to do.

WoW was dying Q3 2011 when we lost 600,000 subscribers.

WoW was sick all of 2011 with losses.

WoW is now better, and may be ready to get back to work later this year.

those are just very small loses due to saturation of games in the MMO market. In order for games to gain subs another has to lose them. When WoW loses 75% of its player base in a quarter then it will be dying. You guys are using the word dying to easily. Last i checked dying comes right before dead. WoW is very healthy with huge profit numbers, now are those numbers as great as a few years ago? no but they are still huge. WoW aint dying until it cant make a profit, stop saying dying and use another word.

Blizzard think that if they do server merges, it will be an admission that WoW is dying. But that is already happening. More so because so many servers are now underpopulated.

Before the game launched in China there were almost 8 million US & EU subs. Now it's down under 3 million by both Blizzard's own financial briefs, and independant estimates. The game is losing something like a million subs a year. Replacing them with players from China is not going to help the US or EU, or make Blizz much in the way of money.

WoW Stable at 10.2 Million Subscribers i doubt its dying they already have plans to fix it without servers mergers atleast for things like group quests and raids and lfd not seeing the problem here sorry.if anything mop will bring in alot of subs soon if it stays this way just got a bit longer i doubt mop will take half a year to be out.

Just a quick little personal anecdote:

I'm a "subscriber". Annual pass'd. Haven't played anything in game since early March. Here's an armory for reference:

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/characte...l/Xerel/simple (I logged in in April for one of those "log in for one second, check friends, then log out" moments.)

I'm fairly sure I'm not alone there. Yes, there are probably plenty of people getting their money's worth out of the Annual Pass--but I think its disingenuous to argue that the people only subscribed because of AP and not playing anymore are a small number. The real test for Blizzard is going to be when AP runs out, sometime around October this year. AP itself was a stroke of genius. Western subscribers are their real moneymaker. Western subscribers are somewhere in the realm of 2 million, last I checked. Locking in 1.2M with one marketing promotion is a *fantastic* retention ratio.

In addition, even if MoP were ready right now, I think they'd hesitate to release it in any window that is near Diablo 3. WoW certainly isn't going to "die", though. It's a solid game. Its just that a huge core of their subscribers have been playing it for years and years. Its inevitable they'll start to lose them at some point.

You might be right but i doubt 1million will only play d3 of course for while but after a few months most will be playing both when the newness wears off i love d3 but in the long run it aint a mmo But i agree on one thing it wouldnt be wise to have 2 games or expansions coming out at the same time frame.

Some of those numbers are not very accurate.

Wii Sports sold 76 millons because it came with the Wii console, not because people went to buy it. The same with super mario and super nintendo, kinetic games and kinetic, etc, etc. Those games shouldnt really have to be considered.

You never wondered, how it is possible that Intel sold the most graphics cards? They don't even sell discrete graphics cards
Companies love these bundle deals. Same goes for Blizzard with AP...

If Blizzard released a poo in a box you would say it was a refreshing change from the norm. You are hardly the most objective poster on this forum.

Its good that subs are stable but the issue here of course is that they have had to give away Diablo 3, mounts, pets, expansions, server transfers, faction changes and level 80 chars to do it. In addition, it would be interesting to know how many of these subs are in China.

Exactly. I don't know why people are thinking that this is a victory. Of course, this information is never meant for us but for their investors but it does give us some clue on what is going on with the game. And these wow fanboys all keep screaming "haha wow haters come at us now" or "haha swtor lost 400k subs" and I just find it so sad... There is nothing happy about this.

I know these are business decisions Blizzard chose to do but this is just silly.
