Blizzard closes down Diablo 3 Auction House on March 18, 2014

With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we've decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from Diablo III.

We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of Souls™ will result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players.

We're working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible. Please note that the shutdown will occur on March 18, 2014. We will keep everyone informed as we work through this process.

Josh Mosqueira and I wanted to provide everyone with a little more information behind this decision, so please have a look at the video, and stay tuned to this site for further updates in the months ahead.

im surprised how people thought d3 was hard. maybe they all made WDs at the start. i tried out a wizard, then a barb, then a DH. got all 3 of them to 60. then got a monk lvled up. had 0 help from the ah before i tried grinding my monk from 42-60. and i didnt miss looking for the best items ever.. i just played. nightmare isnt the place to find items, if it was, it'd be the last difficulty, not inferno. anyway. back in d2lod loot dropped frequently, it didnt take long to get a decent MF build and people could do mephy/baal/andy runs easily without any problems. D2/ was built on being a dungeon crawler game, play to win, not PAY to win. Eliminating the AH would be the first step in fixing D3, next sueing all the botting/gold selling sites and getting them shut down. and finally clearing chat channels of all the spammers and giving them permanent bans, and opening up proper trading channels like d2 had.

    Wow. Massive decision.

I like it overall, I think the AH was making the game too much about making money for loot rather than killing mobs for loot (which is why I don't really like AHs in general anyway). It is a shame to lose the ability to conveniently get a hold of pieces of loot that JUST WON'T DROP for you but the benefits are way too good to ignore.

After another month of grinding Act II i was finally able to step into Act III. (fist 3 weeks of that grind i didn't get a single upgrade, the last week i finally got lucky)
I seriously hope you are joking. Nightmare act III impossible?! Grinding 3 weeks to go nightmare?! Nightmare was incredibly easy and required no AH whatsoever to complete. Game didn't really get hard until halfway hell.

I hope you mean Inferno act II and act III, cause then I somewhat agree with you especially some classes had rough in there like Witch Doctors. But no one needed to grind 3 weeks to do nightmare.

Getting to 60 wasn't what was hard, vanilla Inferno is what was hard (or more appropriately: stupid). And it really was. It's a point'n'click dungeon crawler, the control scheme doesn't have the capacity or nuance for a challenging experience which just meant Inferno was absurd.

I refused to buy Diablo 3 because I did not agree with the Real Money Auction House primarily, though the lack of a offline feature is a close second. With this news, I will most certainly reconsider it since it appears Blizzard Entertainment is finally waking up and realizing that many of their design features were ill thought out. One would hope that when Coalesced Realms fully launch, they also terminate CRZ in favor of Co-Realms. It is a more dynamic and intelligent solution.

RoS's features, albeit at an early stage, also look really good and definitely on the track of what the players wanted. In particular, Adventure Mode looks like a Godsend to those of us miffed about the way the story interferred with moving between Acts etc. it seems like a more old-fashioned free-roam mode like in D2.

I still miss D2, I always will a bit. Every time I log in to a D3 game I can just hear the music playing at the Rogue Encampment but it does at least look like D3 might slowly start to become worth of holding the Diablo name.

Now this is closure. Talk about a hint when the expansion is launched lol.

I wonder if the RMAH was costing more to run than it was making in revenue? It wouldn't make sense to close it if it was in the black rather than the red. Maybe China doesn't like it haha.

EIther way it secures gold AH in WoW as the only kind of AH so a game still stays a game and Blizzard obviously want to be seen as just a games publisher rather than a money making scheme. I think it's probably the best thing to do and games designed for money making stay apart from dedicated games publishers like Blizzard. I wonder if the RMAH was Vivendi's idea and now Blizzard is indie they decided to chuck the D3 RMAH? I wonder, I wonder.

Surely with 14 years of experience of dealing with spam bots in a Diablo setting they would have a solution to minimise spam right? Right!? Can't wait to see iterations of *`*`*`*xxxxxd3xitems123123*`*`*`* sites to commence.

Gold AH, lol? So now if you don't have an uber item to trade, you won't be able to trade at all. Diablo 2 works like this, the only reason Diablo 2 works is because Ladders reset the wealth system. Ladders in D3 will help, but Gold will be practically useless. Not really sure how I feel about the GAH being taken away, because now, I cannot log in and play for 60 minutes and spend 10 minutes in the AH, I will have to post on forums, and log in when people are available etc etc to make trades. I would rather have the GAH and have it reset with Ladders.
You CAN still buy items from other players for gold...

    Just not over the AH.

I personally quit finding upgrades for gear around Act 3 Nightmare, as well. I didn't use the AH until then and was dying roughly every elite pack.

So I can reasonably assume that if you didn't use the AH, getting into Hell was tough. It took grinding. Though, D2 was that way as well, outside of BAALRUN1001, COWRUN1001, and just smurf farming. The gear grind was there for progress into Hell without smurfing.

With D3, I didn't find upgrades in farming until about 60 hours in Inferno. Farming Act1 Butcher runs and I happened on a Crit + Crit Damage ring and I was able move into Act2. I couldn't even get past Black Canyon Mines.

...in March?! That takes long at least this will make me buy the expansion. A surprise for me.

logged in after almost a year of not caring to say anything just to now say:

Good riddance to one of the stupidest ideas Blizzard has had in a long time. I may actually buy Diablo after this pay to win system is out.

Too many retards told me they would make a living off this Real Money AH. None of them obviously panned out. Blizzard will probably find a different way to gouge idiots soon but at least this is going out the window.

Awesome!!! AH destroyed D3 Im afraid. Could just get some cash and buy all the best items of the game and all of a sudden I realized. Why do I play if I go around the goal of the game by actually fighting through hard stuff to get better. Best decision and will ofc like I hope many others go play some Diablo 3 again.
