Blizzard closes down Diablo 3 Auction House on March 18, 2014

When we initially designed and implemented the auction houses, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades. But as we've mentioned on different occasions, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot. With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we've decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from Diablo III.

We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of Souls™ will result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players.

We're working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible. Please note that the shutdown will occur on March 18, 2014. We will keep everyone informed as we work through this process.

Josh Mosqueira and I wanted to provide everyone with a little more information behind this decision, so please have a look at the video, and stay tuned to this site for further updates in the months ahead.

Good now there will be a reason to play again. All of my gold and gear came from the AH game. I haven't played an actual game in months, just log in and buy low sell high search for up grades. AH was a horrible desicion which forced people to not play the game for upgrades.

I never used real money on the auction house.
This won't affect my game experience at all.
Who gives a rat's ass if some dude spends a buck on an upgrade? This game isn't even competitive, so you won't lose to a rich guy.

No I don't give a rats what you do, jealous hell no why would I be I play a game to have fun not make money and I have no problem but it seems you do. I was just stating an opinion and you go ballistic over said opinion pretty much proves what my post stated on this..

Time to reinstall D3 - finally it will be game worth playing and not just a game for paying.

Cute, it only took them 1.4 years to hear what beta testers were screaming at them, and 2 years to remove the second biggest eyesore in the game...

Now remove that fucking online-only requirement and I might actually start playing again.

They couldn't have made a better decision, RoS is starting to look very promising indeed. I am actually quite surprised on how much they listened to feedback, RoS will have what everyone was asking out of D3 and more.

I tend to agree. Now the whole always-online thingie is just not relevant anymore.

I loved not knowing all the sets, all the best possible "in slots" gems and item combos. That's why I played the game for so fucking long. The discovery of new items. New, improved gear. In Diablo 3, that ENTIRE aspect of the game (that niche that made me want to love Diablo as a game and a genre in itself) was simply gone, because of the AH. Oh, you found a new axe? Well, too bad idiot - there's like 5000000 more with better stats than yours, so HA! No variety, no surprises... NO DISCOVERY! The ultimate DEATH of Diablo's gameplay. So, seeing this change, I believe the expansion will bring about a great change for Diablo 3. It will be like the old glory days (LOD) and I can't fucking wait to play it.
The key words in your post there are "mostly alone"... The reason the AH was a good idea was because of what happened to D2's online community that's now going to happen to D3's. The scamming and RMT made D2 a joke, none of which you personally had to deal with if you played mostly alone. Funnily enough, all that discovery and such you're talking about didn't exist in D2 either, anyone who played online mostly knew everything there was in the game, knew exactly what gear they were shooting for and it was no different in that regard than D3 is now. The difference for you personally is that you weren't part of that community in D2 but because you CHOSE to use the AH you were in D3, you could have just played it exactly the same way you played D2 if you wanted to and would have preserved all that concept of discovery.

I like how everyone seems to think this spells the end of people buying their gear when in fact they're just going to go RIGHT back to fucking Ebay and stuff just like they did in Diablo 2.

I mean, unless there's something about this I'm missing and they've imposed strict restrictions to make it impossible to free trade with people, this changes nothing. You will all die screaming.

Also, for fuck's sake just play Diablo 2 instead of 3.

Edit: Oh right, forgot to mention- As I said, people are still going to be buying/selling items for real world $$$CashMoney$$$, the only difference now will be Blizzard makes no additional revenue from it and it's an insecure method of transaction. Lol!

Once again not everyone did that and I bet it was a small % who did.

So I guess that means they won't be pushing a real money auction house on WoW... But they might try to force this in-game store for 'conveniences' more, now that they're losing the DIII AH revenue stream.

But this is good. Having a loot-dropping game balanced around getting loot from something other than drops was absurd and a terrible idea anyway.

The last we need is 3rd party scammers back in the game again and really blizzard wake the fuck up if you dont see the TERRIBLE ramifications this move will create. 3rd party scam sites galore will pop up.

Only way to fix this is make ALL loot that drops account bound to prevent any kind of trading with it. Unless that happens this is a massive epic failure on blizzards part

It makes more long-term sense to let the "Pay-to-Win" subset of players take the risks that they're already aware of when engaging in such exchanges with seedy third parties than to continue to allow the player base to hemorrhage at the insistence of protecting this subset from itself.
