After 17 years at Blizzard, with long and careful contemplation, I have made a difficult and bittersweet but ultimately exciting decision to pursue the next chapter in my life and career.

Before I even joined Blizzard, I was already a huge fan of the company and its games. In particular, I was extremely passionate about the emerging genre of real-time strategy games. It was a dream come true when I was given the opportunity to work on StarCraft, which at the time was being created by a very small team by today’s standards. It was tremendously fulfilling to get to know everyone on the team personally and to contribute our energies toward a shared goal in such a creative and engaging environment.

Blizzard Entertainment has been simply the best place in the world to be a game designer. The best aspect of designing games at Blizzard is that the entire company is passionate about the gameplay within each and every product. From the executive team to customer service to our global offices, every single person is a player and contributes to making the best possible games. It’s for very good reason that the first credit on every Blizzard game is “Game Design by Blizzard Entertainment.”

I’m really proud of the contributions I was able to make to Blizzard’s accomplishments. From building lasting games, to supporting the growth of eSports, to extending the Warcraft world into a feature film, and of course to being able to celebrate our shared passions with the Blizzard community online and at BlizzCon.

The Blizzard community is ultimately the reason why we come to work every day and pour our souls into every world and experience we create. Blizzard’s players are the most passionate in the world and your commitment and dedication are truly awesome to behold. Creating entertainment for you has been an incredible opportunity, and I know that you will continue to grow and become even stronger as a community over the years to come. It has been so meaningful on a personal level to help create joy for all of you.

I’m looking forward to new challenges in my career, but I will always cherish the time I spent with you all and the amazing and collaborative teams at Blizzard. It was both satisfying and humbling, and it made me a better developer and a better person. I look forward to playing Blizzard games as a player for many years to come. Most important, now I have plenty of time to learn how to build a competitive Hearthstone deck.

As to what I will be doing next, I don’t have an answer for you yet . . . but I will “when it’s ready.” My priorities are to enjoy the summer with my family, play plenty of games, and think about what’s next. The game industry is such an exciting place right now with PC gaming thriving, the new consoles, mobile games, and virtual reality becoming an actual reality. It’s like having an empty quest log and going into a new zone for the first time.

In the past, I haven’t been the most avid Twitter user, but I’ll strive to do better and keep you updated there—@Rob_Pardo. Please stay in touch!

It would literally add nothing to the game, just as having the lore characters being hetero adds nothing.
Its a video game. We don't need to try to be exploring the demands of society on people with a non traditional sexuality, we all deal with that enough in the real world.
We're playing WoW to kill internet dargons and take their stuff, not to worry about whether the horde is ready for its first openly transsexual warchief.

You have a distaste for the game? Good for you, I'm sure others do as well and quit for that reason. I know people having quit for MANY other reasons as well which pretty much guarantees that "distaste for the game" ain't the only possible reason for quitting a game. How can this even be remotely difficult to comprehend...?
Calm down, bro. There's no need to get overly excited. I'm just saying that the developers suck ass and can't do their jobs properly. If they did, we wouldn't be looking at such sub losses and stupid drastic changes all over the place. There's no reason for you to take it personally when I say that this game is and has been complete shit for the last few years. It's not your fault that you like it in spite of its shittiness. You can't help yourself, obviously. I don't blame you for having bad taste.

I'm just saying that if they did a better job, we wouldn't have lost those millions of subs.

Its about pandering, political correctness, and identity politics. This is not a sexuality-driven game. There are love stories but they're low key. Forcing them to include lgbt characters just for the sake of doing so is pandering. Thinking they're scum if they don't adhere to that silly demand is political correctness. And feeling as if they're dissing/hating on you because they didn't include someone that shares your sexual identity is at the root of identity politics. And its a profoundly stupid way to be.

It doesn't surprise me at all that there is a growing 'sjw' backlash. People like you bring it on themselves.
Perfectly said, thank you for this post.

He didn't literally say that. He said they don't include controversial "real life" shit in their games. Why is that a problem, they don't have an official stance on it as a company, because their stance on LBGT rights doesn't matter because they are a GAMING company. For GAMES, in their universe where cannibals still exist or some dude loves an ex-human alien parasite, or a transgender demon lord tries to destroy heaven. They just make up cool shit and execute it.

Sarah Kerrigan isn't a strong female character?

That's largely what I've been trying to say, admittedly badly.

    Well put, sir.

Good riddance, the quality of Blizzard's games, Battle.net, and their responsiveness and honesty with their customers has nose dived the last 5-6 years.

I know they're as profitable as ever, but they've declined majorly.

these tumblr kids just make flimsy arguments with no basis constantly. Blizzard has plenty of strong females. Jaina, Draka, Tyrande, Aegwynn(spelling?). The whole first act of diablo 2 is full of demon fighting warrior priestesses. Diablo 3's female playable characters are strong and charismatic and you can choose your clothing or lack thereof in that game. People just want something to offend them, even if they have to grasp straws for reasons why it would.

You're so ignorant. Rob Pardo has not had any interaction with the current Blizzard games in the last 5 years. None at all. He just recently started working on Warlords of Draenor.

Show some god damn respect to the man who helped make legendary games.

On the upside for him he'll no longer deal with insane loons like Protar and their ridiculous rants about make believe social problems in f'ing video games.

You still haven't answered the question of why would they fire Rob because of the lost subs when he hasn't even worked on WoW since the TBC? He is in no way responsible for how wotlk, cata and mop played out.

Anyone surprised he is leaving in the middle of crunch time for an expansion? I can't imagine his job was done, this close to launch. @_@ Maybe the stress was too much

Personally I never thought there was a need to define a character's sexuality in game anymore than irl. I'm gay and I adore the lore characters when they are properly written like with Christie Golden. I'd like to see a few stronger female characters or more rational male characters instead of the extremist stereotypes we had up until MoP when Varian Wrynn was the voice of reason to Jaina Proudmoore's homicidal rage. I like the way she has turned now but I also miss her trying to bring peace. Guess being a druid is all I know.

Because the game is about slaying dragons, not how you rub genitals. Sex is not something the devs should be worrying about. There is no need for them to be going out of their way when there is very little romance in WoW to begin with. Go play Second Life if you want to have your bondage dungeons in game.

And before someone tries to twist my words, I support human rights for everyone. This has nothing to do with human rights.
