Release the Names! Character Name Reclamation Coming

Any characters that have not logged into the game since November 13, 2008 will have their names freed up, making them available to anyone creating a new character or using the paid Character Name Change service.

How Do I Preserve My Names?
You will need to log in to World of Warcraft and enter the game using each character whose name you wish to retain before patch 6.0.2 goes live. While it is possible no one will claim your recently released name and you might be able to snag it again, it is probably not worth the risk if you want to keep your names intact long-term.

Our goal with this great name liberation is to make sure new and returning players have a large and varied pool of names available to choose from—so log in now if you wish preserve your unused characters’ names for your journey intro Draenor.

And this post is giving the finger to anyone who possesses half a shred of intelligence.

Yes, lets reward the people who haven't supported WoW for over half it's life time.

If people that used to play want to keep their names, they're forced to log into those characters, thereby requiring an active sub to do that. They're holding people's names hostage in an attempt to try and mask that this is a dying game, and that quarter 3 is probably the biggest losses we've seen this expansion if not ever.

I have a few alts that I probably haven't logged into in a long time, but my sub is currently out because there's nothing to do until WoD. I'm not going to resub, but I will cancel my account entirely if they take those alt names from me. I chose them, I play them, they're mine on my servers. If Blizzard wants to give them up, they might as well give me up as a customer too.
If you havent logged onto your alts in the past 6 years you are not gonna play them again... and therefor you dont deserve to keep your names.

If you dont play the game anymore, you have no reason to keep cool names away from those who actually do.

If this is an attempt to bolster subscription numbers then I would have to say it would be a pretty desperate & bad one. I can't imagine anyone who hasn't played a game in 6 years returning just to secure their name. That being said given WOD being about 90% focused on trying to lure back old players presumably this might work with some & Blizzard is assuming they might decide to stick around & play WOD.

Good luck to them, I still think they'll be launching WOD with less than 6 million players subscribed but I guess they are desperate enough at this point that anything is worth a shot.

If someone hasn't logged on to a character since the day Wrath if the Lich King launched I don't think they care about that character. I see no alternate agenda here from Blizzard. Tinfoil hat conspiracies about getting people to resubscribe might make sense if we were talking about 2 years without a log in, but almost 6 years? Those people aren't going to come back.

More proof this community is by large a bunch of whiny spoiled punks who will complain about any and everything.

Over the past four years or so I've asked Blizzard to free up three character names and a guild name.

I wish they would go a step further and add Guild Names to this as well. If no one in a guild has logged on since then, then those names should be freed as well.

This is a decision that's way overdo, and I hope they continue to do it every 2-3 years from now on.

this is so unfair, people who arent playing are getting free name changes.

To the community it seems that Blizzard can not do ANYTHING without it being saving their game.

New models -> Trying to get old players back
Draenor -> Trying to cater to old players
Freeing up old names not in use -> Trying to get old players back
Even the DATE for the name change is a conspiracy

Get a grip you lot, if in your mind everything Blizzard does is wrong/greedy/suspicious you really shouldn't stay.

I havent bothered looking for it but...

Has anyone said something like 'This name release gonna cost us a whole raid tier'?

Really, really! You're freaking kidding me! I just popped over to see the comments, curious what people thought(I don't know, just the first bit of news that wasn't a screen full of datamined stuff in a while). I should have known, but NO, I thought at worst it would be people complaining about losing names on an alt they have. NO I though, there's no way it could be worse than that.... Really, some of you REALLY think this is some 'maniacal/desperate plan of blizzard's to get people to resub'?

Any thing that you remotely even need to 'login for' that has even the faintest hint of a time limit lining up with ANY date of the year is somehow Blizzard forcing you to fork over a fortune for some large, unmissable event or item that specifically ties with the date of 'insert perfect time for financial quarter beginning/ending/halfway/quarter of a way in/quarter of a way out/waxing and waning of the moon/the stars aligning/the Messiah being born'.

    THIS....IS....GETTING RIDICULOUS!

Yeah sadly and it is unfortunate but I am pretty sure that some people are getting stupider by the minute.. People complaining about Blizz releasing old and unused names from people who no longer play the game and have no real intention of doing so is just ridiculous.. Really makes one wonder..

I don't see the issue. If I haven't logged in since 2008, I would have no reason to log in again. Even if I would have, I'd create a fresh character instead to get to know the game and not start from a higher level toon.

they have done this before and if you have not played since 08 its likely you wont play again.

You guys I heard Celestalon took a dump the other day. I for one will not be blindsided by Blizzard's shallow attempts to cater to the filthy casuals who like taking a nice easy dump any longer! Those of you who are not stupid sheep will follow in my quest for justice by claiming to unsub even though we don't play anymore and then crying about it on internet forums! We will be heard, Blizzard!!

WARNING Blizzard is on the level where need more subs or the charts will be really sad!
My charaters' name will be free on Ragnaros-EU:
    - North
    - Lotrah
    - Kovold
    - Inken

Blizzard don't make good content anymore to get back old players, they punish them if they not pay again. Nice concept, you are on the right path!
It is like Blizzard get back their game from the old players who bought this game too. Interesting. It has got a good taste in the mouth when veteran gamers want to go back but there are no more named characters on their account.

+ so much money from [Character Services]: Name Change

    The greed is real!

My question is... If I don't log before patch 6.0.2 and someone will claim the name of my old toon, then what will be the name of my character?
  1. mmoc868d8cd30e's Avatar
If you have been inactive for 6 years, you're bound to have at least one free 7-10 day trial period ready on your account, which you can use for completely free of charge to log your characters and save your characters' precious names which you probably have no intention of playing ever again anyway.

I can't believe that people call Blizzard desperate and greedy because of this. They are only doing what A LOT OF OTHER GAME COMPANIES HAVE DONE ALREADY. Call me whatever you want, but I swear when something like this happens, people from other games who are desperately trying to become a competition to WoW are swooping in here on this site spouting as much BS they can possibly imagine. It's like their rants on the forums are going to make people quit WoW or something.

This is a good decision by Blizzard and one of the many nice things that are happening to this game this year. So many people are going to come back to WoW when WoD hits and so many pathetic F2P games are going to die again. (hello Archeage hype train)

Ha, that is EXACTLY what I was just thinking when I heard about this. However it's also kind of nice because this means a lot of good names will be freed that might not otherwise have been. Example, one name I wanted on Illidan was taken. I asked the GM to free it but he told me he can't because while that character/name hasn't been logged in for years, the account itself is still active. So that meant that name can't be freed.

But yeah I don't see why anyone is really mad about this. If you haven't played in 6 years then chances of you playing again are slim to none.
