Release the Names! Character Name Reclamation Coming

Any characters that have not logged into the game since November 13, 2008 will have their names freed up, making them available to anyone creating a new character or using the paid Character Name Change service.

How Do I Preserve My Names?
You will need to log in to World of Warcraft and enter the game using each character whose name you wish to retain before patch 6.0.2 goes live. While it is possible no one will claim your recently released name and you might be able to snag it again, it is probably not worth the risk if you want to keep your names intact long-term.

Our goal with this great name liberation is to make sure new and returning players have a large and varied pool of names available to choose from—so log in now if you wish preserve your unused characters’ names for your journey intro Draenor.

For all critics - if you haven't logged in for 6 years you have 10 free days gametime with MoP on your account anyway... so it will not cost you anything to make sure your old character does not lose its name.

Example from my frozen second account:

It should be based on the number of days /played multiplied times 3 with 3 months being the minimum.

Thus my main character with nearly 600 days /played would have to have logged in the last 4 1/2 years to not be relinquished while my alts on other realms would be subject to having their name taken every three months.

    Just food for thought.

Regardless it is a good thing. It is about time...
I have many alts at 90 with less than 6 days played that I don't log into often in an expansion but level each expansion. Seems it would be silly to get their name changed every 90 days if I have a small post expansion break.

It wasn't an argument, it was a statement. I tend not to want to converse with idiots.

Some of those accounts belong to deceased friends. A lot of their guildies are going to be upset seeing someone run around with their dead friend or family member's name.

Those names were already up for grabs, all names from people who haven't logged on in 6 years (actually less) can be ticketed to free it up.

What a sob story that does not affect more than a hand full of accounts anyway. Even if it's that rare case. Log in on their account today for free or if you don't have the login data, take their old names the day they are available or write a ticket and claim their name today - you know their names.

You are really grasping for straws here.

if it is that common of a name, chances are they see it often in cross-realm aswell.

This is low. Even for Blizzard.
I suspect that implication was certainly part of the motivation for this move, but not the only one.

How can it be that motivation if all affected accounts can play the game for 10 days completely free and have their name secure for another 6 years after that? Please explain.

Because blizzard is doing something that may cause many players to want to pay for a name change. If there isn't a temp free, or at least 75% reduced price for name changes, then I'm calling it an ingenious move by blizzard to generate a good amount of revenue through character services for a brief bit.

But nothing is changing, any names that will become available through this are already available now through a simply GM ticket.

That is what the idiots in this thread do not understand.

THIS ISN'T A NEW FEATURE, IT IS THE STREAMLINING OF A CURRENT FEATURE, IF YOU LOSE YOUR CHARACTERS NAME AFTER THIS IS IMPLEMENTED YOU COULD HAVE ALREADY LOST IT BEFORE THEN ASWELL.

If I Bold/Italics/Underline this will the idiots finally get it through their skull?

    Don't even bother...
If people really think this is a money grab, they won't change their mind. You're just gonna go crazy trying.

Probably because the people that say that are baiting you and by the looks of your post, succeeding.

I'm not grasping for anything. The blog post linked has dozens of comments about deceased friends and family. It's a legitimate concern even if you deem it not to be.

And Blizzard should keep treading softly around things like that because...why...?

Also, dozens of comments is still a drop in the bucket for a game that's had over 100 million players over it's life cycle.

Meh. The one time I petitioned for a name to be freed up, a name I hadn't see the owning player since they were level 35ish in Vanilla, it cost me nothing because it was for a new character. It was my EQ main's name and I hadn't grabbed it on launch day, to my mild regret. Decided I wanted it and petitioned for it and got it. Apparently the prior owner had capped at level 37 in early vanilla and never returned.

Frankly I'm jealous of these people getting a free name change for not logging in, that's a $10 value right there.

Then those people are clueless. You can claim the name of your deceased friend and family TODAY. If they have the login data they can log in today, claim 10 free days and be done with it for another 6 years. There is no harm, there is no legitimate concern, there is just hot air about nothing.

A lot of players already have a lot of characters leveled. I would say most want these new names on their main characters not level 1 alts. Which means paid name changes. A lot of them. This will generate a LOT of revenue and at the same time cut customer service costs since they won't have to respond to the name tickets.
