Armory Stats - Professions
It is another quiet holiday week, so today we are taking a look at the professions of Level 90 characters at the end of Mists of Pandaria and Level 100 characters today. There are 3.7 million characters and 2.5 million accounts that make up this sample. Keep in mind data collection started recently, so there may be some characters that we haven't come across yet.

Warlords of Draenor also changed how professions work, significantly reducing the incentive to cap your profession right away by not gating items with a required high skill level. In Mists of Pandaria, 95% or more of players capped most professions, but this has significantly changed.

If you have any requests for other stats be sure to let us know in the comments, as a quiet week is a good time to fulfill requests!

Do this again in a couple of weeks... I dunno about anyone else, but a lot of my professions aren't maxed yet because it doesn't make a difference other than how many daily cooldown mats I get, and it's so expensive in cooldown materials to level most of the professions, so I'm letting it happen passively through just doing the daily CD + crafting whatever my toons need.

^^ This. No reason to have professions if you have a garrison. Nevermind the garrison time sink.

Professions suck now. NO real way to make any serious Gold. no guaranteed sockets and no way to add sockets to belts as far as I know. There is dumbing something down and then there is beating its head into a bloody mess and calling it a TV.

There's less reason to have them, but there's still a couple reasons that I can think of off the top of my head.

    1. If you have the profession, you can get the BoP crafting materials quicker via profession daily.
    2. This only pertains to some professions, but there's still profession specific mounts.

Granted, you might not care about either of those, but personally those are two reasons why I'd want a profession.

You should think off putting in an all of the above as an option. I have an alt of at least every profession and all but mining are maxed out. Haven't had the need to go out and mine with the Garrison mine and a level 1 mine for my miner does not have decent skill ups. Otherwise I think they could do some revamp for before max level, but otherwise I do not fine the system to be that bad. Just need a little patience.

Out of curiosity, how long have you been playing? If its been since before BC did you enjoy what was required to make and upgrade the epic weapons? I know I sure as hell did. The moment i got my drakefist hammer I was so happy. Then I went about getting the materials needed to upgrade it further. Not because I needed to but because I WANTED to. This upgrading epics isn't new shit but the way they have gone about it is borderline abusive this time.

If you haven't been playing that long I can understand how you might like the way they have been utterly gutted better.

they certainly got nerfed but im still making 50-100k gold weekly just from daily cds and crafts which is really nice at this point of expansion - biggest gain is from saving gold which i was spending on crafting mats in previous expansions since this time garrison is supplying them so its pure profit. i could understand thought that they feel nerfed for people who dont run 11 alts proffs cd

I have been playing since launch. I just view the new system as being about the same as before. Instead of grinding out harder mats, or the like, it is all just time gated now. Same concept of waiting just a different system to get there in the end.

Skinning needs to yield more furs/leather. There's only a finite amount of mobs that you can skin. Ppl are fighting in Nagrand and other areas for either caging elites or trying to kill for leather/fur. Probably not double. But maybe about 1.5x or something like that. You not only have sooooo many herb and mining nodes out and about the world, but you GET an herb garden and mine in your Garrison. Leaving us skinners to fend for ourselves. We have to give up a spot for a Barn. And even then, the yield isn't quite on par. With what we get from Barn plus skinning in the world, miners and herbalists get more natural yield and with greater ease.

What's the point of the poll when you already have accurate graphs?

Mining is absolutely 100% useless now, but I guess it's still up there as a combination of (a) sunk cost fallacy, (b) hope that maybe next expansion it might serve some purpose again and (c) the feeling that all the other professions, whilst not 100% useless (except herbalism), have been reduced in usefulness enough that there's no point powerleveling one of them to replace mining.

I have 700 mining on my highest alt and feel a combination of all three of the above.

Remember Remember, the Great Beta Key Theft of 2014. Poor GameSpot Presenters announcing you could grab a First Come First Served Warlords Beta Key on the Live Stream only to be told seconds later that all the keys were already gone, exclusively to those of us on the Beta Forum Thread here... I do not regret giving the exact URL of the Key Claim Page and announcing once it was live a whole five minutes before they announced it on the Stream!

Totally off-topic I know, just remembering all the great stuff that's happened this year.

It might be interesting to see/know if people cap secondary skills (cooking, first aid, archeology and fishing).

By this time in every other expansion I would have each profession capped at least 3 time over. At present the only professions I have capped are alchemy twice, skinning twice, herb and mining (obviously) three times. Every other profession is sitting around 650-675 or so. I the desire these professions are just not worth it give the amount of mats need to make anything and the cd's everyday that go with them. Not really have anything besides epics in both tailoring and leather working really make them worth the time of day to make them and given this far into the raid cycle, not worth bothering to grind out mats to not really make anything off the labor it takes to grind them out.

It really would have been better had Blizzard just removed them from the game for what they ended up doing to all of them. Mining is even worthless, because everyone has so much they the can skip days and weeks without in going into the mine. If the point was to make them useless, they accomplished that, if the point was to slow boat the ability to really progress or level profession to fast they achieved that as well.

I think they should just complete remove them in the next expansion given what they have done to them in this one. If we are not going to have a garrison going forward, its going to be rather difficult to even level them. What is the point of even leveling them, if they are just going to make them level one patterns anyway.

These profession huts are largely a joke they really do not offer the ability to really not have the actual profession. There skill set is so limited and not a lot can be done with them otherwise.

It would have been nice since they no longer wanted to give the ability to level at least armor profession by making beginner pvp gear, which was usually DE anyway. They should have given the ability to make transmog sets from vanilla on up that are no longer in the game or at least given the ability to make the various piece from sets that are no longer in the game, so people could have those complete set with the right piece. Anything besides just making epic pieces of gear.

So many people claiming professions are "useless" yet I am making more gold than ever before. Its true that gathering professions are no longer needed for most people, but I don't know anyone who really cared about the gathering professions. I was more than happy to dump my gathering professions for something more useful.

Never have professions been so worthless as they are now. There used to be some good to them in the past, special gear, toys etc.. Now Everybody can make their gear regardless of what they actually have for a proff.

I'm surprised so many people still have mining and herbalism, given how many people I've seen complain and claim they're going to change professions in chat. I guess it just goes to show how anecdotal that sample is. Personally I'm never going to change any of my characters' professions. I picked them for a reason for each character, and don't care what they do to them. I do think they went ridiculously overboard in homogenizing professions in this expansion, but it will never cause me to change anything. I like the garrison, and I don't mind how you can get materials from it. I just think removing all of the special things that each profession had was an incredibly stupid idea.

I have cooking, first-aid (because of fishing and cooking), and fishing maxed on 7 characters so far. Fishing got maxed because of Nat Pagle, otherwise it probably only be on one or two right now.

Archeology will stay undone, because I only leveled it because I could fly from place to place without having to use the flight path system to do it. The FP's just don't get it when it comes to leveling this profession and the rewards are really not that great for it to take even longer now to level, its one of those profession that is nice to do when you really have nothing else to do, but it does not make or break the character(s) if not completed. Mist was nice because of having the collected pieces in the Seat of Knowledge, I know the WoD pieces are being placed in our garrison, but if the garrison is a one hit wonder, then it not really worth the investment because its not something that going with us on the journey forward past this expansion, unless of course they change their minds.

Even secondary professions are not really worth the time to level. I really only do fishing to pass the time away between dungeon queues.

Get a trading post on a character with abundant garrison resources (and go ahead and use the work orders to sink extra ore and herbs, 30 resources for 5 items can be a good deal.) There are five traders, and each one has items that sell high and low-- 20 is low, 50 is high, 30 is average. Wait for the day when the trader who offers 5 fur for 20 resources comes in and use your excess resources for fur. This has one small problem-- you have to click to confirm every 5-- but it's an easy way to supply your tailoring needs.
This is absolutely brilliant! And I have just the alt for it, my 2nd alchemist/herbalist who is sitting on over 5,000 garrison resources. Thanks for the suggestion!!!!

    Chaud:

I'd love to see some stats on the size of the normal (non LFR) raiding population. Both Players and Characters with data points LK, Cata, MoP and WoD. What I'm most curious about is how many players have killed a boss or two in Normal (and not LFR) nowadays as compared to pre-LFR. Proportionally (because I realize not as many people play as much anymore), are the number of people who participate in Normal or higher raids these days less or greater than before LFR? That make sense?
