Update (9:15 PM EDT): Added 6.2 notes update

WoW Down to 7.1 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2015 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.1 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2015. This is down 2.9 million from the Q4 2014 call that listed WoW at 10 million subscribers. This appears to be the largest drop in subscriber count in the history of the game.

  • Tokens are not included in this timeframe, as they launched in Q2.
  • World of Warcraft’s revenue performance at constant FX has been more stable, driven by continued strong uptake on value added services, and price increases in select regions, which partially offset subscriber declines, particularly in the East.
  • Heroes of the Storm had over 11 million beta sign-ups.
  • Hearthstone is now at 30 million players, up from 25 million last quarter.

Pretty much as expected. It's going to get even lower by the end of this expansion cycle. I knew WoD was going to bomb after playing the beta for months. They never addressed any of the issues people expressed while on beta.

Those of use using Tokens are still subbed, we just aren't being charged until our tokens run out ... so don't try to blame the drop on tokens. It just isn't the case.
I think the argument is that some people quit in anticipation of the WoW Token before the WoW Token launched. The token launched in April, which isn't in Q1, so those subs wouldn't be counted.

I don't get why people are shocked.

The little things in game already tell you of the massive fall in players.

    1) The AFK timer that kicks you out of the server, during launch, I couldn't go to the kitchen to grab something to eat without getting kicked off. Now I can go downstairs, browse the shops for snacks and take my time and still be online.

    2) Number of people in Warspear/Orgrimmar, its virtually empty.

    3) When I go farm timber, I hardly bump in to anyone, pretty sad really.

And like I said, farmville doesnt last very long, or in this case, Garrison.

I was bored, i quit, then i came back because it is now a habit. WOW isnt fun, its boring, but its a habit, like I need to login ever so often for my fix, then quit again.

Well this wouldn't have happened if they didn't focus the entire team on the next expansion and outsource this one. Don't think it will ever again rise that much.

    Anyway:

Pretty clear where we are here. They certainly did their best to make WOTLK the peak by stripping the world of people with the dungeon finder, a year and a half of no content, and a shit followup.

I feel ripped off by WOD and wish I could get even a partial refund. 25% price increase was NOT justified.

Just like Game Time Cards, Tokens are not calculated into the total amount of subs.

the 7.1 million are those who are signed up for the $15/mo reoccurring payment or those who have paid for many months in advance. GameTime Cards and Tokens are not reflected.

That said: 7.1 million is still a lot, game is not dying this is an expected loss as always happens as an expansion goes and people get bored of the new and shiny. Next expansion will come out....subs will spike up to 10mil again for a few months....lather, rinse, repeat.

Even if they had a wake up call from this it won't change anything drastic for WoD, just balancing attempts and introducing more garrison gimmicks like in 6.2. They always leave big changes for the following expansion.

Huge drop... More than I expected...

The expansion is terrible: we said that to them in beta and they ignored almost all the feedback...

    The deserve this drop

You rly think they did not know before today that the subs were going down.... we did not know but they probably have weekly report of subs movement they might event get them daily, meaning they knew way before you did that their subs were going down. Do some of you at least realize this? this is not news to them. It is for the investors thought.

Beta is too late to make major changes, as by that time they invested too much time and money already

You can't buy a token with gold unless someone first buys one with money to sell for gold.

Not surprised at the drop in subs.. surprised by the sharpness of the drop though..

Ah well.. Can't complain too much. I had high hopes for the game when it came out.. within 3 months I couldn't be arsed. Seems I am not the only one :P

Not far off from my own little guess. For what it's worth, I think the current design of the game from a social pov (garrisons etc) is one of the most significant factors driving sub losses (imo imo imo).

Give Garrisons more customization, make mythic 10 or 15 man instead of 20, give us dailies, give us flying, and give us some content worth playing. And maybe that will bring back some subs. That's my opinion.

How much is the people that hadn't played in years, reactivated, then quit for the same reasons they quit months ago?

I saw many friends reactivate that I hadn't seen since wrath days, some are still playing, but most played for 1-2 months then quit. Again a lot of them, are 25-30 now with Wives/Kids/Careers to worry about.

Im surprised no one has mentioned the reason they would comeback or sub again and reunite friends to play, for me and many other friends who quit the answer is one.

BRING BACK 10-MAN RAIDING!!, I know of at least 150 players spanning 15 guilds that would return in a heart beat and play again even this shitty content if it was in a 10-player environment, 20-man raiding killed a lot of guilds and separated many friendships, guilds with massive progress almost near the end of this 1st tier 9/10 Mythic and they quit, not even split up just outright quit because for them the game will never be the same playing without friends and having to struggle with 20 strangers and drama that comes along with it.

I speak from experience from being a 10-year subscriber who was the GM of a 10-year old raiding guild we split and quit and myself and a few others who are hanging on to a fine thread is about to break that thread soon also if the game dont change, the reality is games only last when you play with friends and wow lasted for so long because it established that ground, WOD broke that very sacred thing it was built on which is friends playing together and with options to scale bigger or stay small but still enjoy competitive play and not be discriminated for it because you opted to do 10-man raid, flex mode does not make one feel equal nor it should to any raid size, though its a very nice feature to gear up for content it should not be considered sufficient for organized groups who cant get 20-players to raid or want to stay with 10.

I have so many Ideas on how to keep the game relevant as Im sure the other 7.1 Million subscribers do also, I hope Blizzard reads this one day and makes a choice to reunite the subs and friends they lost by bringing back 10-man raids and 10-man flex mode Dungeons to gear up raid groups together for 10-man raids etc, you can email me blizzard for this 10 million subscriber Idea .

Hopefully something is done quick before we all quit for another game and comeback in 3 years when WOW is relevant again.

Thank you and Call me .

Judging from a lot of the story stuff, we are actually at the end of the expansion. I'll just leave it at that as to not spoil the story.

There's never been a period of 18 months (i.e., a year and a half) where there's been no new raid tier or new other content. The closest was the 14 months of Siege, which is still quite a ways short of a year and a half. You don't have to exaggerate to make it sound serious when 14 months is already rather serious.

That's probably what they were trying to do with WoD. I don't think it worked, mh?
