Update (9:15 PM EDT): Added 6.2 notes update

WoW Down to 7.1 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2015 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.1 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2015. This is down 2.9 million from the Q4 2014 call that listed WoW at 10 million subscribers. This appears to be the largest drop in subscriber count in the history of the game.

  • Tokens are not included in this timeframe, as they launched in Q2.
  • World of Warcraft’s revenue performance at constant FX has been more stable, driven by continued strong uptake on value added services, and price increases in select regions, which partially offset subscriber declines, particularly in the East.
  • Heroes of the Storm had over 11 million beta sign-ups.
  • Hearthstone is now at 30 million players, up from 25 million last quarter.

Or they came back for the new and shiny stuff and the hit of nostalgia... and then went back to doing other things once the 'newness' wore off.

Blizzard could have released Wrath of the Lich King and you'd still see a massive drop in subscriptions.

I really love archaeology, it's relaxing to dig and see what you can find but I don't think there's anything relaxing when the areas are too tricky with too much mobs on you. I also think it's a bit silly with the rare finds when you can't really pick up the fragments for arakkoa because it goes over the maximum amount you can carry <_< so you just..leave it there and weep and hope you find some key fragments.

if wow drops down to 2-3 mio, that would be the best what ever could happen. bye bye casual mainstream idiots that play 1 hour per week for their 660 gear, they dont need for their pet battles. no, serious: blizz can begin to develop a mmo to a mmorpg crowd instead some facebook 3rd person action game, and focus to 1 direction only, instead trying to make everybody happy with useless shit.

I want to play the game, not have some NPCs play it FOR me.

The fact is this, the wod expansion content was just kind of designed as fun for a 1-time run through. Many/most people did that in the first week if not the first 3 days. After that, the stuff to do at 100 was very mediocre this time around and people left in droves. That's a fact. Many more people haven't logged in for months and just haven't bothered to cancel yet in hopes that it gets better. Wow isn't dying, but anyone who says a 2.9M sub drop in a quarter isn't a reflection on the low replayability/staying power/max level content quality (whatever way you want to word it) in wod are fooling themselves.

Good thing you don't have to wait huh? You can take 15 minutes, do everything you need to do in a garrison, and go play the rest of the game. Garrisons are NOT the problem. The lack of things beyond the Garrison is a legit issue.

Problem is that there is not realy much to do at endgame if you are casual. Sure you can level up garrisons and do LFR and even some PVP, but the storyline dies very fast and then it's just repeat content.

Blizzard has been milking content for a longgggg time now. Releasing new bosses in a new raid every 6 months is not particularly strong anymore.
When they finaly realize they have to make wow a story-driven MMO (because warcraft story franchise is a goldmine), the game will probably pick up again.

Warcraft Lore is a GOLDMINE. Blizzard should work on more story driven content for fans to play the game. Solo epic chalanges, solo dungeons even solo raids with NPCs. Yes i know this is an MMO, but quite frankly wow as a standalone MMO is a failure for a long time now. Only thing that keeps it alive is the warcraft universe fans wishing the game would progress into other ways.

I stoped playing wow for a long time now but i still keep coming back to forums just for that, to keep track if wow is changing or not.

I was really excited for this expansion and I think that the leveling was absolutely amazing.
I wish Highmaul had been more epic. It didn't feel like a city to me, it was too small and uninhabited.
BRF was okay, but I'm still just bored with the entire orcs of draenor story.
I severely miss dailies. I was one of those people who loved the start of MoP with dailies and rep grinding everywhere.
I miss having a timeless isle equivalent.
I think garrisons are trash. I want them gone forever.
I do like no-flying, but that isn't content.
I hate Ashran. It actually wasn't that bad pre-server merging. It was usually 125 Alliance vs 75-100 horde constantly, but now it's 5-10 alliance and 40-60 horde. I can't accomplish anything.
The capital cities are completely uninspired. They are not significant locations or well built at all.
Professions have been marginalized. There's barely a reason to have them.
Gold inflation is out of control.
PvP is plagued by bots and certain OP abilities, more so than any past expansion.
5 mans are once again pointless and will continue to be pointless with Mythic.
I'm really tired of these larger than life/ try hard tier sets. I would much rather them be more reasonable and stylish in their simplicity, but still do enough for it to look class specific.

Just some of my current thoughts. Still hoping for the next expansion. I think something like South Seas would breathe a lot of life into the game.
You must play on a server linked with Sargeras for Ashran. And I agree with most of your content except I actually like garrisons but I wish they were more customizable so it felt like my garrison and not just the same generic buildings. However, please do not put future development energy into garrisons since it has been said that they will not continue into the next expansion. Just plan ahead if there are any new similar features.

Wrath had actual open world content at launch.

WoD shoehorns people into logging in for 5-10min unless they need to do their raids and then log off.

And people can't understand why people quit? They're paying to play for 3-5 hours a week.

The lack of flying really is starting to hit home with a lot of people. really no other way to explain it

Draenor itself is great and the levelling up story was amazing, but the End Game fell flat. The game needs other PvE content than just raiding :/

After more then 5 years I quitted end of march.

They disabled flying because the world was so empty. With the Garrison its even more empty.
20 Mythic destroyed so many guilds even my guildlead had no other choice then quantity > quality (too many good player quitted)
and the story? just boring shit.
Highmaul was a boring designed raid and BrF feels like a new wing of the boring SoO.
And now they will bring mythic dungeons... they have no new ideas for content in my opinion.

LOL! No surprise there. Also, LOL @ "the largest team we've ever had working on World of Warcraft". It certainly shows...

For all the hype it had going into launch, WoD has been the single, most boring, piece of shit expansion to date. It baffles me that a company this large and successful could be so out of touch with their golden child game, repeating the same mistakes year after year. And not only repeating them, but getting worse it fixing them.

You'd think this would be incentive for them to make the necessary changes for future content and expansions, but nah... they'd rather milk the cow for everything it's worth while devoting their time elsewhere. It's been pretty obvious for some years now that WoW is not a priority anymore, and that it has taken a backseat to other "projects" over at Blizzard Entertainment.

I just hope the game goes free-to-play next expansion to put the final nail in the coffin.
