Update (9:15 PM EDT): Added 6.2 notes update

WoW Down to 7.1 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2015 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.1 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2015. This is down 2.9 million from the Q4 2014 call that listed WoW at 10 million subscribers. This appears to be the largest drop in subscriber count in the history of the game.

  • Tokens are not included in this timeframe, as they launched in Q2.
  • World of Warcraft’s revenue performance at constant FX has been more stable, driven by continued strong uptake on value added services, and price increases in select regions, which partially offset subscriber declines, particularly in the East.
  • Heroes of the Storm had over 11 million beta sign-ups.
  • Hearthstone is now at 30 million players, up from 25 million last quarter.

I'm bewildered by how many dislike cataclysm or outright say it was the worst expansion. Sure, the raids got a bit stale towards the end, but that expansion gave us replayablility of the older zones. Do most of you not have alts you leveled since then? The expansion brought life back into azeroth. Leveling is almost -too- fast now 1-60, but at least it is no longer drawn out like it used to be. (and I started in january of 05. Vanilla raider, blah blah)

I personally found WotLK dismal. Raiding was good, but man leveling was a chore after the second character. Still is. When I get to Borean Tundra, I'm almost tempted to play entirely off of rested exp or painfully dungeon crawl my way to 80. This is not a hallmark of a good game environment, in my opinion.

Indeed, well deserved. I don't know why they took a huge step back from what the game had become, making classes with a 2 button rotation (which is a slap in the face to pvp), and taking away flying mounts, lets be honest... we need them, it's fine leveling up ONCE just "exploring" the world and what not, but really, it becomes boring as hell having to walk your ass just to find a flight path to use... doesn't even make sense. Ashran, garrisons, dailies, it seems they learned nothing from MoP, they just made it worse, and added worse combat mechanics. And it's so funny how still some classes are completely useless in pvp (destro locks, shamans, WW monks), and ignore all the feedback from the community, oh wait... they told us destro locks were "fine" in pvp.

Reputations, did you enjoy doing the countless numbers of mind numbing dailies to work on those reputations?

And the new grinding in an area for mobs is better? the old system had its pitfalls but it worked better than the new crap hoisted on everyone.

I am very happy wow lost subs perhaps now they wont subject classes to major changes depending on developer mood swings. Homogenization is killing the whole point of actually having a class with its nuances.

Nevemind the fact how many 10 man guilds actually quit due to the new mythic size restrictions? how many of those players found new homes? face it the new DEV team has made sweeping changes some good some downright terrible.

Its a curse that every DEV I know of has, because their jobs are predicated on innovation and writing code they will change stuff around to satisfy existence. Sucks for the end user. I don't blame them, hey a mans gotta eat but it sucks for users.

They were massive. Blizzard fucked up. The gain just shows that that many people wanted the game to be better than what blizzard has done with it. You have to admit they dropped the ball on something. This isn't just a typical occurrence.

You didn't include specifics and simply retorted with insults. You keep trying and failing, kinda like Blizzard.

They took valor/justice gear and gated it behind reputations. Basic end game crafting recipes behind reputations. They gated reputations behind other reputations. It was utterly insane.

Do you recall the 5.1 dailies and how people loved them? And then again with 5.2? People were pretty happy, blizzard claimed they were happy with that. And then they made timeless isle... which sucked. It was repetitive grinding style content.

Instead of giving us what we liked with MoP, they gave us what we didn't like and made an entire continent of timeless isle which was not fun. There are almost no dailies in WoD. The reputations are horrible grinds. They gated professions behind bullshit. They removed flying. The questing culmination (story) was unsatisfying and
got no 5.1 style addition as I was under the impression we would be getting. In fact patch 6.1 had no content.

3 million people left because Blizzard took at as much fun stuff as they could and then gated everything else.
dude i play since vanilla this game, and im sorry to said but go to forums and u will see ppl QQ about dailies from day 1 they never like it. and OMG stop witht he timeless isle stuff i havent see a single part of drenor outside of Ashran that is like Timeless isle. Reputation grinds is the same as it was on Vanilla im exalted with all the faction and the only think i did was do the Apix dailies.
gated professions behind what????????? i do my profession stuff w/o any problem and i didnt have any since day 1.
Yeah i agree with u about the Story (lore) but the game is been like that since Cata.

Blizzard obviously didn't create enough content fast enough. This is the fastest drop in wow subs EVER! They need to quit with the follower/boat facebook games and just give us some daily hubs and rewards that make us want to log in and play daily.

I think the devs don't care, they sold lots of boxes cash mounts and etc.

People bitched about dailies because you had no real choice but to do them for the rep, which was the gate for gear. The worst part was that crafting recipes and more gear was locked behind a double rep grind.

Unplayable pvp. Utterly horrible, and I'm not talking "It was always unbalanced"-horrible, but youtubers and streamers who were making their money off WoW are quitting in masses-horrible.
Garrison and filler content from the first second on. The shit you tend to hear during the content drought at the end of the expansion was what the whole PR-communication felt like all of the time.
Empty hype based on TBC nostalgia. Cheap tactic that got the boxes sold and had people quit a few months in. Blizz couldn't have asked for more with WoD's 'content'.

I'm half-assed subscribed, mostly for raiding on my main. 13€ don't hurt but I've never been this inactive so early in the expansion. I like the new CMs and the the new raiding system (the way the difficulties are separated). Highmaul and BRF are enjoyable. Rest of the game is in a horrible state.

Not silly. I did too. They took away a major feature of the game for me. No desire to pay to play a game who's designers think removing major content is good design.

Hell, people modded MINECRAFT to get flying mounts. Friggin computer lego players want to fly.

And Blizzard thought it was a good idea to remove them from the game? smh.

Draenor and the leveling stuff is absolutely top shell (shame about scrapping Farahlon and delaying Tanaan). I had a BLAST leveling, and on the first ... month, say, but then it hits you. There's literally NOTHING to do outside of instanced pve\pvp. Pandaria was awesome in that regards (even if overused)... you had so many daily hubs, August Celestials, Klaxxi, Order of the Cloud Serpents, Shado-pan, bla bla... and IF YOU WANTED, you had options and stuff to look for (exalted rewards, enchants, etc).

SURE, some people dislike dailies, but as long as they don't gate content behind it, whoever wants to... does them. And not shit like the Apexxis daily... that was just bad.

My biggest beef? Curious fact :

Siege of Orgrimmar lasted for 14 months. (one raid, 14 bosses), 1 patch.
The Burning Crusade lasted for 22 months. (karazhan, gruul, magtheridons, ssc, tk, hyjal, blacktemple and sunwell, plus daily areas, new dungeons midway, etc), 1 expansion.

They say they have more and more staff, but it makes no sense.

Also, the number of zones\dungeons is VASTLY getting reduced every expansion. ( WoD? 8 dungeons at launch. TBC had like 15 at launch...) So yea, they're releasing less stuff, and dont give me shit about time taken. TBC had 3-4 dungeons with the same tileset (hellfire had 3, zangarmarsh had 3, aunchindon had 4, tempest keep had 3...) and they all had different feels, bosses, etc. So they could just done the same, make 2-3 dungeons out of a tileset, WIN... they dont all have to be unique in assets\art.

Im not shocked about the numbers loss, it felt like it on my guild (1 in 3 leaving)... but i hope blizzard wakes up and fixes the glaring issues and stop slacking.

add : forgot to state that i'm actively subscribed, and still absolutely enjoy raiding (currently 8/10 in mythic)... highmaul+brf as a raid tier are good, some encounters are highly exciting, and Hellfire Citadel seems to keep going in the right direction, so i'm happy about that, and will remain subbed.

    Opposite extremes.

Having dailies but gating a significant portion of gear progression for non-raiders behind it is dumb.

Dailies for gear enchants and other slight upgrades/min maxing is fine.

Dailies for prestige is also good.

There's also no reason for reps to be harder to earn than ever before. Why they got rid of the wotlk tabard and emblem system I'll never. It was near perfect for keeping the casual playerbase engaged in the gear grind. And it kept old raids relevant with the weekly quests towards the end of the expansion.
