Update (9:15 PM EDT): Added 6.2 notes update

WoW Down to 7.1 Million Subscribers
Blizzard had their Q1 2015 earnings call today, announcing that WoW is down to 7.1 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2015. This is down 2.9 million from the Q4 2014 call that listed WoW at 10 million subscribers. This appears to be the largest drop in subscriber count in the history of the game.

  • Tokens are not included in this timeframe, as they launched in Q2.
  • World of Warcraft’s revenue performance at constant FX has been more stable, driven by continued strong uptake on value added services, and price increases in select regions, which partially offset subscriber declines, particularly in the East.
  • Heroes of the Storm had over 11 million beta sign-ups.
  • Hearthstone is now at 30 million players, up from 25 million last quarter.

The graph alone should tell you the huge increase last quarter was fool's gold and a huge outlier.

The drop puts the number back in line with the general graph trend.

WoW is an old game with a large customer base on a slow, but steady decline.

This slow and steady decline is going to have miscellaneous ups and downs with expansions and patches and such, but you just gotta pay attention to the trend, not the individual data points.

Yes, they dropped. Why? Because they've made it casual friendly, and absolutely removed the reason to actually .. play the game.
It's no longer the player that has to progress daily. It's Blizzard that nerfs the shit.

And Casuals? They play up to the point where everything in LFR is unlocked. At that point, give a month or two, they quit.

On a daily basis this is what it looks for a character.
    1. Log in.
    2. Garrison.
    3. Optional. Alts
    4. Garrison on alts.
    5. Raid.

    Log out.
Total estimated playtime was the time you did your Garrison. And the time you spent on raid. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less.
So Raiders/Players have "NO" free time to UPGRADE themselves for raids. None. There's nothing outside the raids you can do to improve your gear. And simply, after that there's no reason to play. Wait for the next week.

Simple solution to keep players up, and harden the content would be to add "Reforge and Upgrade to the game".
Reforge - Simply the old tool.
Upgrade - To upgrade to items, to all the different states. Warforged, Sockets and Tertiary stats.

But again, adding this and the Casuals will QQ oMG TOO MUcH AND iTS so HARD.

Hehehe...where are all the dickriders who said the sub count will not drop but will actually increase?

I'm not really surprised about the drop. While I've enjoyed WoD a lot, the content just doesn't last for a very long period of time without some content patches backing it up. I've done most of what I wanted to do and the first major content patch of the expansion has yet to drop. It also doesn't help that Garrisons became the center of attention of the expansion, since the outdoor content is very small compared to how other expansions handled it with dailies.

Fingers crossed for another hefty drop in subs, so that a few heads roll at Blizzard. Currently everything is out of control... world design, raid design and class design - it sucks so hard compared to previous expansions.

The real reason for this drop is : Warcraft 3 (RoC & TfT) gave us the "Burning Legion" content and all the stuff around it, so when Vanilla WoW came, was surprisingly good 'cause it extended the WC universe then BC brought back the feeling of W3 Reign of Chaos and then the same with Wrath of the Lich King brought W3 The Frozen Throne... BUT Cataclysm... even it was about the dragonflight lore, the books and all of that... it felt like the PATH Blizzard was heading until that moment... it was like they just drop the main purpose of the game, MOP was even worst in that way... there was no following of the MAIN story that Warcraft gave us and now Warlords is like a Burning Crusade Prequel, but not a great Prequel indeed, so... IF they don't return to the initial path they will surely lost the subs, completely, I have no doubt about it, they must concentrate in Argus/Sargeras content now... and I mean now! the game is sinking OR just close it before it became worst and worst, and from there, It will be time for Warcraft 4 (Maybe).

    Peace.

There is no such thing as a full time botter or part time botter. You are either a botter or not.

I'm sorry but what you're saying doesn't make sense when looking at the graph...

Well, that graph is pretty accurate. Late WotlK is when the game started to become worse and more casual friendly. That 40% buff on ICC was only the beginning. Back in the day, people got to know each other by doing dungeons together. You could tell who was good at the game and who wasn't. If you were good, people noticed you and invited you in their guild. Nowadays, this can't happen of course, since you get matched with randoms from 5 different servers. Also, there is no difficulty option. Anything that isn't mythic raiding is piss easy and all classes are super linear. So yeah, why would anyone wanna play WoW? Sitting in your garrison and clicking buttons gets boring after a while.

It's funny though, because it took people almost 5 years to realize that Blizzard has gone full casual. Chances are that many will resub with each patch/expansion they release. Yep, the modern "gamer" is pretty stupid I'm afraid.

    On average....

    3,000,000 / 90 days = 33,333 people unsubscribing per day
    33,333 / 24 hours = 1389 people unsubscribing per hour
    1389 / 60 minutes = 23 people unsubscribing per minute!

Wow. And we havent seen any updated sub numbers since beginning of April? This game needs to sort itself out.

At least 3 million more losses coming, might make them sit up and listen. But will it be to late????. I am guessing it will be. On a lighter note lol, I certainly will never by a blizzard or activision product again, and any thing to do with holinka and above management will be ridiculed by me as I follow there careers. Am I old and grumpy maybe, but I think dirty people need to feel consequences. There are two many corporate types that think they can do what they like

Immersion died with Cataclysm, and Blizzard has no plans to fix that problem anytime soon.

Honestly, I dont often wish for bad things, but I agree here. There needs to be massive losses and a restructuring to get us back to the WoW of Wrath.
