Traditional Tier Set Bonuses Removed in Battle for Azeroth
Gameinformer released an interview with Ion Hazzikostas today that stated raid sets with bonuses will be phased out for Battle for Azeroth.

  • Raid set bonuses are being retired for BfA.
  • Gear will be more heavily themed to the place it comes from.
  • The team wants gear customization to be expressed through the Azerite system.
  • Tier sets lock down character slots and limit choices.
  • Tier has begun to feel more like a drawback with so many different sources to obtain gear today.
  • Options from these sets will be rolled into how the Azerite system works for more customization in enhancing spells and abilities.

Developer Interviews
We're continuing to take a look at new information from the BlizzCon developer interviews. Method Interviews Steve Burke and Chris Robinson at Blizzcon 2017.

  • Blizzard pays attention to what artifact appearances are the most popular and consider that in future art design.
  • World quests and scaling technology is changing how the team creates the world in game.
  • There are no plans currently to recreate Gadgetzan in WoW to match the Hearthstone version.
  • The team will look at revamping faction cities only if it makes sense for the story.
  • The hubs of BfA reflect the lessons learned from previous hubs.
  • Allied races will add depth to classes. They will be able to be hero classes if it fits the lore.
  • Class options for Allied Races are based on the fantasy of the class and not just which faction needs another race option for a specific class.
  • PVP Warfronts are being talked about, but not something that has been decided on yet.
  • Low lying fog is something that was planned for Legion but wasn’t implemented until 8.0
  • There will be visual updates as you progress your Heart of Azeroth.
  • The team wants the Heart of Azeroth to feel more like the excitement and progression of the initial launch leveling of the Artifact Weapon and not so much the infinite trait artifact power dump from later in the Legion expansion.
  • It is possible for players to keep multiple gear pieces from the Heart of Azeroth slots to switch between for certain encounters in the game.
  • Murlocs are not currently planned as an Allied Race.
  • Allied Races have been completely remapped from their NPC versions to fall in line with current playable races.
  • There are no plans currently to separate ranged dps and melee dps in the group finder, but it is possible in the future.

The idea of a "hybrid tax" was obviously not very good in the grand scheme of overarching class design and it made some specs arguably not viable/unplayable. I'm not suggesting we make huge changes or even small changes at all for that matter, but that it is a worthwhile conversation to have. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

We've been reading and talking about Classic within the Community team almost every day. Before BlizzCon we were all so nervous and, really, amazed that this project was actually going to be announced at the show. But we do need to make sure things are kept in perspective - we don't want to jump onto too much of a hype/posting train, as its still all coming together and there's not much that is concrete.

I can guarantee you that the Classic team will be listening, and we will be forwarding as much along as we can. We know this project means a lot to a lot of players, and it means a lot to us too. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

I don’t understand how anyone can think this is not a good change.

Having half your gear locked down for 6 months because of artifacts, legendaries, and tier in a world with Titan forging was so dumb.

How does it kill raiding? How many people raid just to get tier bonuses? Most people can get 4pc within 4-5 weeks anyway do you all just quit after that? There’s obviously many other reasons people raid. There will still be the heart of Azeroth gear (that doesn’t titanforge, so mythic raids will always be the best), trinkets, and I imagine many other best in slot stuff. Not to mention... *gasp*.. the fun of it.

Transmog? They are obviously going to keep cosmetic class sets going. You honestly think they would just ditch that for entire pvp seasons and raid tiers?

Solid change Blizz. Now getting an upgrade will actually be getting an upgrade.

Honestly, 21 tier sets in, I'm finding that the class-themed designs of sets are getting kind of old.

I'm sure that they'll still be doing sets for each class, but I wouldn't mind taking a break from class-themed armor for some more variety. It would be nice to get some race-themed armor for each armor type, there are a lot of race/class combinations that don't have any armor to reflect their unique identity. Typically the only time we've gotten any sort of racial armor is when we're fighting enemies of the same race (blood elf themed gear in Sunwell, troll themed gear in ZA, etc.)

I know they said we'll be getting Horde/Alliance themed armor, but so far from what they've showed it's actually more like Orc/Human themed armor.

Gnomes, night elves, worgen, tauren, Forsaken, goblins, and blood elves are all kind of lacking in themed armor (at least modern armor with decent resolution textures) these days.

I am in favor of this. They are right having gear slots locked by tier is kinda lame. Granted with no "legion legendaries" it wouldn't be as bad, but as a prot pally my best legiondaries were helm, shoulders, and sometimes legs. Those are also all tier slots so 6 gear slots are "locked" if I get anything in that slot it's an automatic DE.

The Azurite armor is basically "the new tier" it is the reason you will want to raid and push progression. It will not TF so a mythic raider is always going to have better than a heroic who will always have better than normal. The progression on the azurite armor will be like tier bonuses.

I prefer them rather than the weird cosplay sets, you remember the "I'm a geist!" rogue ICC set? Only changed to "I'm Al'Akir now!" first set of Cata? It was horrible.

so other then trinkets, mythic+ will be far superior to raiding. every piece can get perfect stats and no loss of set bonuses. such a shame.

Raiding will still give better Azerite gear as it can't titan/warforge.

You forgot the Heart of Azeroth gear which is literally a better and more enticing version of tier sets. It also doesn’t Tita forge so you have to mythic raid to get the best version.

How about we see how it works before we go and whine? That also has nothing to do with the fact that the best ilvl Azerite gear still is in mythic raiding.

it doesnt matter, removing set bonuses further pushes raiding down, mythic+ already gives better loot, so now other then trinkets, its close to pointless to raid unless you are a top tier mythic raider who does it for prestige.

As it stands now there is no changes to the M+ system, which means you could net a heroic level Azerite piece from just running a dungeon and every week you could get a mythic level one, raiding is not the only way to get those pieces, and Dungeons can offer more itemization variety.

Trinkets? For the first half of legion dungeon trinkets were better, it's all on tuning for those, they could swing that way again for BfA, making raiding just about worthless.

I wasn't aware they told us Mythic+ can Titanforge to mythic level after they've mentioned several times they are limiting Titanforging.

Guess the truth is that the design team ran out of ideas for "class fantasy" to make the sets look cool lol. The sets the past couple of xpacks minus a few sets for each class have looked like shit. Not to mention some of the bonuses that made you just want to scratch your head at lol.

I understand where they were coming from, I just would have rathered something that fit the ascetic of TOS better.

So, there is no point in raiding normal or heroic. only mythic, ASSUMING it cant get to mythic levels, which lets be honest, it will be able too.

Thing is what a lot of M+ "Titanforging" is is a base level. 915 Mythic 10 Titanforged is the same as just saying 915 Mythic 10. And the limits with the TF system may only lie in the 3 pieces plus chance at tfing being lowered, they have no solid answer on it yet though.

So what you're saying is that we should stop making assumptions that things will be exactly like they are now?

No, we should assume it will stay as it is now since they said they're happy with M+ and will just be looking to make improvements.

We can assume max M+ level will still give a heroic level piece baseline with the chest giving mythic baseline.

Fuck no, actually havign a slot finished because you got your item was great. The same way WoW worked right until it went to shit with garbage like titanforging and random upgrades. Get a BiS drop, done for that slot. Not grind 24/7/365 for a 0.1% chance of a 0.1% chance of a 0.1% chance it upgrades 50 ilvls. I got my Tier helm, I was done for helms that tier, I got my BiS sword I was set for that tier. Not "Oh it didn't titanforge 48 times, time to run this place for another 12 months".

All this change is doing is adding even more bullshit into the endless Artifact Power 2.0 system.
