Varimathras is a boss in the Antorus, the Burning Throne raid in World of Warcraft. Our strategy guide will help you to defeat the Varimathras encounter and the loot listing below contains all of the loot he drops on each difficulty.
Overview
Varimathras is the single target Patchwerk style fight of the raid zone. This boss has few abilities, making most of his difficulty the tight damage check before he enrages.
Heroic Changes
- Torment of Frost fills the encounter area with ice, reducing movement speed and dealing frost damage to the raid.
- Torment of Fel fills the encounter area with fel flames, dealing increasing periodic damage to the raid.
- Necrotic Embrace will mark a target, which upon expiration will deal Shadow damage and spread to all players within a 10 yard radius.
- Heroic specific mechanics and abilities will be marked with
throughout the guide.
Strategy and Positioning
- Two markers should be placed on the back-left, and back-right side of the boss.
- The entire raid, except the tanks, should start on one of the markers, and move to the other one when Dark Fissures appear.
- Rogues should stand closer to the boss to intercept Marked Prey, because they can easily Shadowstep back.
- Never stand in front of the boss if you are a non-tank class.

All Roles
- Taking any shadow damage will trigger Misery, reducing all healing taken by 100%, and increasing all Physical damage taken by 200% for 7 seconds.
- Quickly move to the opposite marker when Dark Fissures appear.
- Move at least 10 yards away from the raid if affected by Necrotic Embrace.
- Use raidwide movement increasing abilities during Torment of Frost transitions.
DPS
Healers
- Players affected by Necrotic Embrace should be at full health before their debuff expires.
- The main tank will take a large burst of damage whenever the boss reaches full energy.
- The raid will take increasing damage during Torment of Fel, making healing cooldowns very effective to use during this part of the encounter.
Tanks
- The main tank should stand in front of the boss, as close to him as possible, while the off-tank should stand behind the boss within 8 yards of the main tank.
- Tanks should taunt swap after each cast of Shadow Strike, which occurs every time the boss reaches full energy.
- The boss should always be tanked facing away from the raid.

As one the dreadlords overseeing the Legion's forces during the Third War, Varimathras failed to stop the rebellious Lich King. He submitted to an ill-fated alliance with Sylvanas Windrunner, then made one last bid for power before facing a humiliating defeat. In payment for his blunders, Varimathras has been tortured by the Coven of Shivarra. The vindictive sisters stripped away both flesh and sanity, leaving only a singular desire to inflict suffering upon the mortals who cost him everything.
Overview - Varimathras uses the darkness of his cell to stalk his prey, attacking them with Alone in the Darkness.
Damage Dealers - 
Healers - - Torments of the Shivarra inflict constant raid wide damage.
- Tanks -
- Torments of the Shivarra - The Coven of Shivarra designed Varimathras' cell to torture him for all time.
- Torment of Flames - Flames fill Varimathras' cell, inflicting 247,020 Fire damage to all players every 1 sec.
- Torment of Frost - Frigid air fills Varimathras' cell, inflicting 247,020 Frost damage to all players every 1 sec. In addition, this effect reduces movement speed by 40%.
- Torment of Fel - Fel flames fill Varimathras' cell, inflicting 179,000 Fire damage every 5 sec. The damage of this effect increases by 5% every tick.
- Torment of Shadows - Dark magic fills Varimathras' cell, inflicting 179,000 Shadow damage every 1 sec.
- The Fallen Nathrezim -
Misery - The darkness of Varimathras' cell weakens any player that suffers Shadow damage. This effect prevents all healing effects for 7 sec. In addition, all Physical damage taken is increased by 200%.
Alone in the Darkness - Varimathras steps through the darkness, inflicting 1,140,000 Shadow damage to any player if they ever aren't within 8 yards of another player.- Shadow Strike - Varimathras stikes all players in front of him, inflicting 3,570,000 Shadow damage in a 15 yard cone.
- Shadow Strike - Varimathras stikes his target inflicting 5,000,000 Shadow damage.
- Dark Fissure - Varimathras tears open 3 rifts under random players. Each rift inflicts 357,000 Shadow damage every 3 sec for 6 sec. When the rift expires it inflicts 2,860,000 Shadow damage to all players within its radius.
- Marked Prey - Varimathras marks his prey, charging through the darkness towards them after 5 sec. As he charges, Varimathras will hunt the first target he hits, inflicting 1,070,000 Shadow damage and knocking the target back.
- Necrotic Embrace - Varimathras corrupts a random player, inflicting 1,070,000 Shadow damage after 6 sec. When Necrotic Embrace expires, it spreads to all players within 10 yards.
- Shadow of Varimathras - Whenever Varimathras moves through the darkness, his shadow lingers and attacks players until killed.
- Echoes of Doom - Marks a random player with Echoes of Doom for 3.5 sec. When this effect expires, dark magic lingers at the target's location for the remainder of the fight. Inflicting 2,000,000 Shadow damage to all players within 8 yards every 3 sec.

Varimathras Loot List
Varimathras drops item level 915 (LFR), 930 (Normal), 945 (Heroic), 960 (Mythic) loot. Loot can have higher item levels if it becomes Titanforged or Warforged.
