Uldir Boss Guides » Mythrax the Unraveler Guide

Mythrax the Unraveler is a boss in the Uldir raid in World of Warcraft. Our strategy guide will help you to defeat the Mythrax the Unraveler encounter and the loot listing below contains all of the loot he drops on each difficulty.

Mythrax the Unraveler is an encounter that consists of two alternating phases. One consists of stack management, while the other of add management.

Heroic Changes

  • The only Heroic change is a general increase in difficulty. There are no Heroic specific mechanics and abilities.

Strategy and Positioning

Phase 1:
  • The raid should be spread about 5 yards apart to limit the number of targets affected by Oblivion Sphere.
  • Players charmed can be knocked, and gripped, or damaged out of the orb.
  • Imminent Ruin deals fall off damage, so parts of the room should be kept open to allow players with the debuff to move away from the raid.

Phase 2 (75/50/25%):

Strategies by Role

All Roles

  • Each time the boss transitions to Phase 2, there will be a large burst of damage.
  • The raid will take higher amount of damage depending on the number of stacks each player has.
  • Each time charmed players get freed, the raid will take a burst of damage.
  • Tanks will be taking heavy damage when unable to drop their Annihilation stacks.

  • The boss will cast Essence Shear, which is a frontal cone that applies stacks of Annihilation. Use nearby orbs to drop stacks, and taunt swap as needed.
  • The N’raqi Destroyers should be tanked at least 40 yards apart and turned away from the raid.

  • This is a 2 Phase Encounter, with phase 2 occurring at 66%, and 33% hp on boss.
  • Overarching Mechanic of the fight is Annihilation stacks.
    • Annihilation reduces your MAX HP by 1% per stack for the rest of the fight, as well as applying a small DoT.
    • On heroic the DoT is 1370 damage every 3 seconds per stack.
    • After taking a stack of Annihilation, you spawn an Existence Fragment at your feet for every 2 stacks that you gained.
      • Soaking a fragment reduces your Annihilation stacks by 2.
    • The majority of abilities that apply Annihilation stacks can and must be avoided.

Phase 1
  • Essence Shear
    • This is a frontal cone ability that deals moderate tank damage and applies 16 Annihilation stacks.
    • It also prevents anyone hit from spawning Existence Fragments for 25 seconds.
  • Oblivion Sphere
    • This spawns an orb on a random raid member that charms anyone within the 5 yard circle around it.
    • While charmed, you take small ticking damage and gain 1 stack of Annihilation every 2 seconds.
    • The orbs cannot be killed, but the charm can be removed when the player is knocked out of the circle. Some skills such as Typhoon, Ring of Peace and Deathgrip will break a charmed player free instantly. You can also deal damage to a charmed player, which will slightly knock them back, eventually freeing them from the orb after 2-3 damage dealing abilities hit them.
    • When the charmed players break free, it deals 24k damage to the raid.
    • Orbs that charm people do despawn after a player is free until much later (after phase 2).
  • Imminent Ruin
    • This is a 12 second debuff on 2 players.
    • When it expires, it causes an AoE explosion for 30k damage.
      • You take less damage the further away you are from the explosion.
      • Anyone within 12 yards of the explosion gains 4 Annihilation stacks.
  • Obliteration Blast
    • This is a beam ability targeted at a random raid member that hits everything in its path.
    • It does moderate damage and applies 8 stacks of Annihilation to anyone hit.

Phase 1 Strategy
  • Tank the boss near the wall while the raid loosely spreads out around the center of the room about 6 yards apart from each other.
  • Imminent Ruin targets need to run to opposite sides of the room, or at the least away from one another and other players.
  • Oblivion Spheres targets must be freed as quickly as possible, with knockbacks and damage dealers breaking them out.
    • Remember, spheres do not despawn until later in the fight, and walking into one will charm you.
    • It is recommended to have a few players assigned to breaking charmed players free.
  • Tanks must swap every Essence Shear cast.
  • Players should avoid picking up Existence Fragments except for tanks, unless they are at high stacks (15-20+).
  • After a tank swap, whichever tank was hit by Essence Shear needs to run around the room and collect fragments to clear their stacks.
  • The raid leader should keep an eye on everyone stacks and remind those with high stacks when they need to collect and clear.
  • If you are short on Existence Fragments, you can assign 1-2 players to be hit by Obliteration Blast that have low stacks.
  • This creates extra orbs for tanks to soak.
  • Having tanks <10 stacks at all times is a priority.
  • When the boss reaches 20% HP, Existence Fragments stop spawning, so you must burn the boss.
    • Bloodlust at 20%.

Phase 2 - 66%, 33%
  • Xalziax’s Awakening
  • As we transition phases at 66% and 33%, the boss spawns Oblivion Spheres that must be dealt with immediately.
  • At the end of a short cast, he deals 30k damage to the raid and applies 5 stacks of Annihilation and spawn essence fragments around everyone. Collect a few to reduce your stacks if they are high.
  • The boss also goes immune to damage at this point - the raids focus will shift to the adds.
  • Do not run into or through the boss while he is immune, or you take 30k damage a second.
  • Obliteration Beam
    • This is a laser beam that he aims and fires, the same as phase 1, avoid it and do not get hit.
  • Visions of Madness
    • 5 “clones” of random players spawn and begin casting Mind Flay
    • These adds can not be tanked. Their cast is interruptable and they are stunnable.
  • N’Raqi Destroyer
    • Two giant old-god styled adds spawn (one on each side of the room).
    • These each do the same Essence Shear that the boss did in phase 1. The tanks must pick these up and tank them facing away from the raid.
    • Void Volley
      • This is an interruptible cast that deals 30k damage to the whole raid, it is cast by the N'Raqi Destroyer.
      • It must be interrupted each time or healers can quickly fall behind.
    • Critical Mass
      • If adds are within 40 yards, they take 80% less damage and deal 80% more damage.
      • The tanks must tank them on opposite sides of the room.
  • Oblivion Spheres
    • At the end of each phase 2, all Oblivion Spheres in the encounter area are reset and despawn.

Phase 2 Strategy
  • Tank the adds ~45 yards apart near the walls, with the raid positioned in between them.
  • It is recommended to use whatever side of the room has the fewest Oblivion Spheres on it, to avoid accidental charms.
  • Immediately free any Oblivion Sphere charmed players.
  • Split Melee DPS between the 2 Destroyers to make sure you have enough interrupts to stop Void Volley casts.
  • Ranged DPS should prioritize on N'Raqi Destroyer until it is dead, in between killing any Visions of Madness that spawn. Then switch to the remaining N'Raqi Destroyer. Finally, clean up any Visions of Madness that might be left before / as the boss becomes active again.
  • Immediately move for Obliteration Beam.
  • All adds should die during this phase before the boss reactivates.
  • Phase 2 lasts ~70 seconds from the time he begins running to middle, about 60s after Xalziak’s Awakening cast finishes.

Late Fight Strategy
  • As you get into the 2nd and 3rd “Phase 1” rotations, you will need to keep a close eye on managing Annihilation stacks, especially tanks. Tanks must clear stacks before phase 2 starts, as there will be almost no orbs spawning in phase 2, outside of the ones that do on the transition.
  • By the 3rd “Phase 1,” you may need to have players intentionally get hit by the beam to spawn some fragments for the tanks.
  • At 20%, no more orbs spawn when hit by abilities, Bloodlust and kill the boss.

Mythic Mythrax the Unraveler Abilities
  • Xalzaix
    • Periodically Mythrax will cast Living Weapon, calling on Xalzaix to fight with him.
    • This happens ~15 seconds from the beginning of every Phase 1, and every 1 minute after that during that respective Phase 1.
    • Xalzaix is a squid looking mob that floats.
    • Void Echos
      • It does a cast that deals 33k damage to the raid. This cast cannot be stopped.
      • Each subsequent cast deals 50% more damage.
    • Obliteration Blast
      • This is the same beam ability the boss has, and it is directed at a random player.
      • The add isn’t tankable. It rotates through casting Void Echo and Obliteraiton Blast.
      • Once he hits 50% HP, the add flys back to Mythrax and leave the encounter.
    • Both the beam from the boss and Xalzaix will despawn any essence fragments that they hit.
      • This makes it significantly harder to stockpile orbs for tanks.
      • This means that every single essence fragment for the most part needs to be reserved for the tanks.Tanks always get first priority on orbs.
  • Phase 2 - Lasts 75s
    • During phase 2 on Mythic, Xalzaix hops off Mythrax and is active again.
    • Obliteration Beams cast by Mythrax always go towards Xalzaix
      • Xalzaix also casts Obliteration Beam at the same time towards a random raid member.
      • You need to dodge both of these beams.
      • Both beams also still despawn Existence Fragments.

Mythic Mythrax the Unraveler Strategy Guide
  • Phase 1
    • Tank the boss in the center of the room instead of on the wall, with the raid evenly spread out around him.
    • Assign healers to specific spots, so every player is in range of at least 2 healers.
    • When Mythrax is about to cast Living Weapon, all players should step in toward the boss to force it to spawn in melee range. All players must swap to and nuke down Xalziax.
      • The goal is to bring Xalziax to 50% before his 3rd cast of Void Echos. A third cast of Void Echos is likely a wipe.
      • DoTs continue ticking on Xalzaix after he hits 50% and floats away. DoT classes should refresh their DoTs before 50%. This will cause Xalziax to spawn with less than 100% HP the next time it rejoins the encounter.
      • You will have to deal with two Living Weapon casts per phase. If you can't push to 66% and 33% before the third cast, you do not have the DPS to defeat the encounter.
    • When Mythrax reaches 66% or 33%, if Xalzaix is active he will jump back onto the bosses back. As a result if you do get a third weapon spawn right before you transition, ignore it and it will despawn once you phase change.
    • If a tank has 15+ stacks going into phase 2, ensure they collect as many orbs as possible to reduce stacks.
    • Bloodlust timing is dynamic on this fight, and there is no single best to use it on Mythic. If you can save it for the final phase, you can push the boss from 33% to dead while only dealing with one Living Weapon instead of two. Don't be afraid to use it earlier though if you raid needs the extra boost of damage.
  • Phase 2
    • Position the entire raid in the North East corner of the room, with 2 raid markers down 15 yards from each other along the wall.
    • Place a Warlock gate between the two raid markers.
    • One tank will bring the first N'Raqi Destroyer to the raid group, and everyone focuses it down.
      • When Visions of Madness spawn, cleave damage onto them as much as possible.
      • When the Destroyer dies, DPS nuke down any remaining Visions of Madness.
    • While the entire raid is stacked up killing the first Destroyer, the second tank is on the opposite end of the room 50+ yards away tanking the second Destroyer.
      • A healer will need to be with this tank to keep them alive.
      • You also need a second interrupt with this tank, a Shaman healer is ideal as they can interrupt. A warlock pet can also be used to interrupt.
        • The healer with the off-tank should stand near the center of the room. This will make any Visions of Madness spawned by them be closer to the rest of the raid, making it slightly easier to kill off.
      • Once the first Destroyer dies, the second tank runs the second Destroyer over to the raid group.
    • While all of this is happening Obliteration Beam will be coming. It will always be aimed directly at the raid as everyone is grouped up. This is why the two raid markers exist. Each cast of Obliteration Beam the raid will move from one marker to the other. The warlock gate can be used once per phase to make this movement easier.
    • Continue repeatedly moving between the two raid markers until everything is dead and Phase 1 begins again.

The image below is the to show the ideal spot to stand during Phase 2 just before the Visions of Madness spawn. When the raid is standing on that spot, the Visions will all spawn directly on the group, making it easier to kill them off. Shortly after they spawn, you will have to move again for the next Obliteration Beam.
