Overview
Grong is a one phase fight that focuses on testing your raids single target damage while being able to move around the room avoiding several other mecahnics. The Horde (H) will fight Grong the Jungle Lord while Alliance (A) will fight Grong the Revenant. They are the same encounter mechanically, but each mechanic has a different name (and sometimes visual) depending on your faction.Fight Basics
- You will need two tanks to perform a taunt swap throughout the fight during (H) Bestial Combo / (A) Necrotic Combo.
- Adds will spawn around the room that will need to be interrupted and killed. They are the priority.
- The boss gains (H) Rage / (A) Death Energy over time, as well as when adds successfully complete casts.
- At 100 energy he will cast his special ability called (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell.
- This ability will do one raid wide AoE hit for every 25 resources used by the boss. It will also apply Shattered to the raid after each hit.
- Shattered lasts 40 seconds and increases the damage you take from (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell by 30%, stacking.
- If the boss successfully casts (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell at 100 energy, it is likely a wipe.
- The raid must make the boss cast (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell before his resource pool reaches 100.
- To do this, a player will need to use (H) Apetagonizer Core / (A) Necrotic Core which is a special action button for 20 seconds.
- When an add dies on this encounter, it will leave behind one of these cores that a player can run into to pick up.
- Using the special action button it grants will cause the boss to immediately cast (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell and lose 5% HP.
- The raid should aim to trigger a (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell using these cores when the boss's resource pool reaches 50%.
- At 70% the boss will start to gain his resource more rapidly, and at 40% even more rapidly.
- This will result in potentially higher resource (H) Tantrums / (A) Death Knells happening later in the fight.
- Bloodlust / Timewarp / Heroism should be used at 40% or lower HP.
- On Heroic Difficulty there are two new mechanics:
- Ferocious Roar will be cast every 20-30 seconds and fear any player not within 5 yards of another player. Be near others when this is being cast.
- At the end of the tank combo, the boss will cast Bestial Throw on the current tank. This will squeeze them for five seconds dealing damage over time, followed by throwing them at a random player in the room. The targeted player should run away from the raid, as the tank's impact does significant AoE damage, which is reduced the further you are from other players.
Strategies by Role
All Roles
- All players should spread out ~10 yards to avoid taking extra damage from (H) Megatomic Seeker Missles / (A) Voodoo Blast, only grouping up when necessary. This is cast every 20-30 seconds and leaves a large AoE damage area on the ground.
- Any player can pick up a core the adds drop upon death, which grants the special action button to trigger a (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell.
- Avoid being near adds when they die, as they have a point blank AoE explosion on death that does moderate damage.
- On Heroic difficulty and higher, ensure you have a "buddy" to stand near for Ferocious Roar casts.
- On Heroic, run far away from the raid if you are marked with the arrow during Beastial Throw.
DPS
- Adds are the priority when they are up, but depending on your raid size you may want to leave some melee on the boss.
- The boss casts (H) Reverberating Slam / (A) Deathly Slam at regular intervals, which will target a melee DPS in range of the boss.
- This ability will deal point blank AoE damage to anyone within 10 yards of the player, and leave behind an echo of the damage, which detonates a few seconds later. Players must move out of the echo before it detonates.
- Decide on an interrupt order for the adds, as if they get multiple casts off, it can quickly be a wipe.
- Adds can not die within 15 yards of the boss, or they instantly give him 25 of his resource. Be prepared to stop DPS if the boss is too close.
Healers
- A cooldown rotation will be needed for (H) Tantrum / (A) Death Knell casts.
- During the late stages of the fight (sub 40%) more raid-wide cooldown overlap may be needed to survive the AoE damage.
- If the same tank receives back to back Bestial Smash casts, they will likely need an external cooldown.
Tanks
- The (H) Bestial Combo / (A) Necrotic Combo is your main concern on this encounter.
- This combo will cast three attacks, in a random order. The attacks can either be Bestial Smash or Rending Bite.
- Bestial Smash deals significant physical damage and applies a debuff called Crushed, which increases your damage taken from additional Bestial Smashes by 500% for a few seconds.
- Rending Bite applies a 10 second debuff which deals physical damage, stacking.
- To survive the combo, tanks should taunt off one another whenever the boss does two of the same attacks in the row, or on the third attack if he does not do the same two in a row.
- No tank should ever take two Beastial Smashes or Rending Bites back to back.
- Adds can not die within 15 yards of the boss or they will grant him 25 of his resource. Position accordingly.
Mythic Grong Strategy Guide
- On Mythic difficulty, the tank mechanics are far less forgiving.
- The cast time for the abilities used during the tank combo are reduced down from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds. This requires very fast taunt reaction time from the tanks.
- Additionally, the Ferocious Roar ability is now instant cast, requiring players to pre-position when the ability is due to be cast.
- Two adds now spawn instead of one, forcing the raid to split into two groups to deal with the adds / interrupts.
- The cores left behind from the adds now give the extra action button for 60 seconds, up from 20 seconds.
- A more detailed strategy for Mythic will be released once Mythic raids are open.
